It was a ski rep who works for sportability chris...maybe just wanted to sell me something else. We will be going 5th of April so was a bit worried by her comments. As for France its nothing personal its just that everytime we get a quote for a school group France is very expensive compared to the others.

OK. I was assuming March next year, and given the current Austrian heatwave they do have a point. Easter is always going to be spring skiing wherever you go. The above 1800 rule (might even be above 2000 rule now) applies. What sort of age are your customers? Do you need evening activities or is skiing a priority?

For late season in a mixed group I think Les Arcs takes some beating. You can get there by train and there is a funicular link to the town of Bourg st Maurice. Skiing of all kinds with a good central area where beginners and the more advanced can meet. Excellent and rapid progression from nursery to blues and then to harder blues, reds and easy blacks. Tree-lined skiing, across to La Plagne, down the hill to Villaroger. Not much on in the evenings, but plenty of good terrain of all kinds above 2000. Much of the same applies to Les Deux Alpes, but I will tell you more about that when I have visited the party from my school at Easter this year. Unlike you, I am not generous enough with my ski holiday time to give it up to school!

Huwphill, for school groups, France does often work out more expensive as many areas charge adult lift pass prices from age 13 rather than 16 or 17.
Where was the rep trying to sell you when they put you off Zell? I'm surprised any company would not recommend a glacier resort

You can get a 'student' pass in Serre Chevalier now, although I assume some proof of study such as an ISIC card will be needed.

She was trying to sell me Santa Caterina or Bormio. I was surprised as I thought sell would be ideal

What do you want, other than snow-sure - apartments, clubhotels, local hotels? Specialist schools op, DIY or mainstream TO?
|
|
|
|
|

well what I would like is a hotel near the slopes a school that can do 4 hours lessons a day, sole occupancy would be good but not essential. I usually use a specialist schools outfit but am not averse to biting the bullet and going diy

Huwphill, what sort of standard skiers? what age kids?
I presume you don't want to do Passo Tonale at Easter as well as Feb? Or maybe change the resort for Feb?

Varied ability mostly intermediates with a small core of black run junkies, easter kids are 30 13 yr olds and 10 18 yr olds older kids are v mature so will find some nightlife to chill out to. Change the resort for feb could be a genius idea, if they would let me do that then that could be a plan, nice one Elizabeth

That sounds like the best plan. Tonale is snowsure, so will do for Easter well. You can then pick any resort for Feb (I still reccomend Zell )

Huwphill, for near slopes and sole occupancy, look at the following:
SkiPlan - LDA, Hotel Les Airelles
SkiBound - Serre Chevalier, Hotel Le Frejus
A bit further from the slopes:
SkiPlan - Vars, Hotel Le Franou; Serre Chevalier, Hotel La Balme
SkiBound - La Clusaz, Hotel Le Gai Soleil
Near lifts but bigger, so sole ocupancy unlikely:
SkiPlan - ADH, Hotel Beausoleil
Equity - Montgenevre, Hotel Rois Mages
SkiBound - Menuires, Hotels Piolet and Des Alpes; ADH, Hotel Belle Aurore
All of those will do you full board with either packed/hot lunches as you like and four hours ski school if that's what you want. Instructors are ESF, English-speaking.
Be careful of doing DIY for a group, or you may fall foul of the law and find that you have unwittingly become a tour op yourself, in which case you suddenly have all sorts of liabilities you weren't necessarily counting on.

Hi-just following up Lizzard's comment re. being a Tour Operator;
I've been running School trips for years-sometimes using a 'whole package' option, but also often booking the whole lot myself; for numbers from 15-45.
Basically, have used skisolutions/iglu for the flights and accommodation, then booked lift passes and ski hire online. It's dead easy, saves you money and gets you exactly what you want. Particularly if you have experienced skiers who don't want lessons.
Downsides: takes a bit more time on the computer and you don't have a rep on the ground if you need help (had a boy with a broken leg in SC last Easter and the Equityski rep was fantastic in helping us deal with the hospital and the pisteurs who found him!).
Re. the comments on the legalities-I teach in private sector so we have much more freedom than the maintained sector. However I have heard this one before and TBH, reckon it's all a bit of a storm in the teacup-there are other things which are far more likely to go wrong on a school ski trip than the tour company going bust!
I've taken school trips to Val d'Isere (Champs Avalins in La Daille, Courchevel-Catina, Val Thorens-Boulons de Neige, Serre Che-Grand Aigle, Alpe D'Huez-??forgotten over Easter and have always been fine. Go high and to a large resort if you've got some good skiers
/large group.
We're in Courchevel 1850 in two weeks time for £690 per person 'all in' so it can be done at a reasonable price.

Definitely a good plan re the language.
I was in Italy at 1/2 term, and the doctor dodn't speak any English. She had a "phrase book" that had a load of questions in Italian, then translated into about 8 languages. She pointed and I asked the kid.

I have just been offered a cracking deal at Maria Alm for April, it looks awesome, 150km piste from hotel door and 865km in all but whats the snow like early april?
|
|
|
|
|
|
Personally not for me; either for a personal trip, but particularly for a school outing.
Looks quite low for my liking-particularly in April (800-2000 m). If there's one thing worse than going skiing and there's not much snow....it's taking a plane-full of teenagers skiing and there's not much snow.
80 km (according to website) in total is also quite low for good skiers for a whole week?
Have a look at http://www.onthesnow.com/AT-AT/531/
It may be linked to a massive lift system, but you'll have lots of low links between them and the runs may not be open down to the valley bottoms by then. Which equates to lots of lift and not much skiing!

Yeah your right anyway the saga draws to a close I have booked Zermatt because I was offered an awesome deal today by Hourmont which includes 5 hours supervised ski school a day and a guaranteed delivery back to the lift outside our hotel where we can supervise some free ski on one red run and one blue. Personally I'm chuffed because I really fancy Switzerland. I really fancy Kelly Brook as well but she's probably even more expensive than Zermatt
Thanks for all the help very much appreciated x

Nice one. How do you manage the free-ski stuff? As far as I can make out, Staffordshire only allows students to ski with an instructor.
Zermatt is gorgeous.

Im going to do my ASCL course allows you to lead ski groups you have a relationship with most ski ops throw them in free when you book...pretty good really. Only problem is that this boarder boy has to get back on skis after 2 years bet I will be like Bambi on rollerskates for the first hour

Chris Bish, different authorities apperar to have different rules re Free Ski.
I've come across the following:
Slopes have to be risk assessed by staff before taking kids on them.
Kids can only go on slopes that their instructors have taken them on that day
Kids can ski as long as there is a member of staff on that slope
Kids can only ski in a group with a member of staff etc etc

I'm in the independent sector so am no expert on LEA matters...but doesn't it depend on the insurance policy held by the LEA for this sort of activity? I have a lot of respect for teachers in the maintained sector who always seem to have one hand tied behind their back whenever they want to do something extra-curricular and meaningful.
We're given a pretty free hand-as long as we spell out to the parents exactly what rules the pupils are expected to follow...if they injure themselves whilst breaking them, then we're covered (according to our Bursar!) Common-sense stuff like stay in groups, within eyesight, meetings twice daily, take a mobile etc, must say where they'll be skiing-but we always insist on lessons for new/inexperienced skiers. I suppose it depends on whether you're taking a bunch of newbies or a pretty experienced bunch.
Load of back-covering IMHO-in eight ski trips, I only had two major accidents to deal with; one broken leg (first weeker muppet deliberately breaking the rules) and a dislocated pelvis (in an ESF ski lesson!). Nowadays, they all have mobile phones and can get in contact with you immediately if anything happens.
C-1850 in a fortnight!

Snowhound....
yes I have heard all of those, we have to take out non lea insurance to make it easier. Then if the liability rests with another company they aren't so jumpy. They still go through it with a tooth comb but will let us free ski if the policy specifies it. So taking out seperate insurance is easier than jumping through hoops
