Hi everyone I am an experienced party leader but due to the massive sizes of our groups we now have to split our groups into a feb and an easter trip. Obviously I am keen to make the right choice of resort so could any of you please suggest a resort that would be perfect for late season. My initial thinking is Zermatt
thanks a lot ,
Huw

Plymouth dry ski slope should be OK
Seriously though, what transport ? Do you have a set travel plan?
Accomodation might be the limiting factor at Easter ?

Huwphill, Is this for a trip in Easter 2008 by any chance? You may struggle to find anywhere this year.....would it not also be an idea to have a more easily accesible and more police-able ski area than Zermatt, if you are escorting a large group of school children? It's a hell of a taxi fare to get back from Cervinia when they miss the last lift....

We usually use the snow coach but have air travelled from Bristol before. Accom isnt a problem we have ski companies chucking hotels at us but its who to trust as regards snow conditions. I just need to know if anyone has any experience in this area. Maybe a resort with excellent snow making facilities or something like that. Id hate it to turn into a skateboarding trip lol

Our last school of the season leaves us on April 20th - we're expecting to have plenty of snow for them.
(I'm also expecting to get a fruther week's skiing/boarding in after everyone has gone home. )

Huwphill, If you come up with a few resort options I will check the historic snow records for you if it helps.
Just out of interest, where abouts in Devon are you ?

Huwphill, SkiPlan/Equity operate three clubhotels in 2Alpes and can offer apartments or third party hotels as well. Crystal run a schools programme, but they don't have a lot of experience at it and frankly I wouldn't trust them to get it right. SkiBound used to offer 2Alpes, but they dropped their hotels here, and I'm nnot sure they still operate in resort.

There's always loads of school parties in Serre Chevalier at Easter. As Easter is early next year, when are your holiday dates. SkiPlan, Equity, and SkiBound are all there I think.
|

Schools ops in Serre Chavalier are SkiBound, SkiPlan/Equity, TJM/Skitopia. All three offer both hotels and apartments and operate in all four main areas of the resort.

Easter 2008 is really early: Easter Sunday is March 23.
So you don't need to worry too much about snow conditions: unless something ghastly happens most resorts above 1500m will be fine.
But I wouldn't choose Zermat.
1. Expensive. 2. Disjointed. 3. Hassle to get to.
My son's school went to Val Thorens for Half Term and seemed to have a good time.
I would also suggest La Plagne - go for Belle Plagne if you can.

this caught my eye as I am in Torquay too so you may be taking one of my kids?!
I wanted to mention that the Boys and Girls Grammar Schools have indicated that they will have the bank holidays of Good Friday and Easter Monday off BUT the 'Easter' holidays will be 5th - 19th April - it has made me stop and think twice before looking at availability/resorts for 2008 'Easter' hols.
Also wondered if other schools in the UK may be doing this?

sally s, yes they are - our local in Snowless Essex is doing the same as yours.
Huwphill, if you are looking at the "usual" Easter hold of early April, then you need to go high for snowsure conditions. I would say base no lower than 2000 in the Alps. Best candidate has already been mentioned - Val Thorens. You can't go higher!

Be careful about that. When the temperature goes above zero, the snow cannons don't work any more, or they'll be dropping rains on the piste.
Stay high.
My personal observation, entirely un-scientific, is when Easter is early, the snow melts early too.

Huwphill,
Have a look at SkiBound who come to Tignes.
Easter should not be a problem as it so early next year. The Espace Killy opens untill the 8th May this year and probably the same next year

Hi all on the Zermatt theme, what about staying in Cervinia and enjoying the best of both worlds. I like that idea, the other choice is probably Schladming any thoughts?

Quite a high disaster potential there. Sometimes the top lifts close and you get stranded on the Zermatt side overnight. Not sure you would want to risk that!

Chris Bish, sounds like too much of a risk for a school holiday.

hmm but the kids are with instructors for 4 hours and free ski could be limited just to the red and blues in Cervinia its just difficult to know where I can be sure of snow. I wanted zell am see but one company said snow will not be grat and there will be horrendous amounts of people trying to get up the glacier. The only other thoughts I had were really high resorts like St Caterina or Bormio

Easter 2008 is in March. I think there will be snow everywhere then. I am expecting to go to Saalbach in March.
Never bothered with France?????
Many think, me included 3V is the best and Espace Killy number 2. Austria is fun, but for serious piste skiing I choose France.

achilles, I've done Saas Fee with a school group. The downside is that if you stay in Saas Fee you have to cart luggage, if you stay in Saas Grund you have to cart skis.
That said, it is snowsure.
