@phil_w, the UK budget airlines now get you to pay for "cabin baggage" and only a "small rucksack or handbag" is allowed on for free that has to fit in front of your feet...
Easyjet website:
Everyone can bring one small cabin bag per person on board for free. It can be a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including any handles and wheels) and needs to be kept under the seat in front of you. That should be enough to bring all the essentials for your journey or for a short trip. Your bag can weigh up to 15kg, but we do ask that you’re able to lift and carry it yourself.
If you’d also like to bring a large cabin bag on board (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including any handles and wheels), you have the option to book a large cabin bag for your flight. Every customer who books a large cabin bag can also enjoy the benefit of speedy boarding.

They have been discontinued/unavailable for some time. A shame as I could be doing with one.

In the "old" days when we had kids each child would have one of my boots in their backpack as I was petrified to lose them and didn't have space in my handluggage.
For about 15 yrs I was precious about my boots which were £00s and had been altered in Bicester, Les Arcs and Courchevel before finally "fitting" so didn't dare let them out of my sight - then one year the sole fell off and I rented a pair for a day while they were repaired - and was gutted to find that these off the shelf boots were 100* more comfortable - because I think technology had moved on so much. I was going to just rent in future but ended up buying a Decathlon pair in the sale - they are super comfy, not performance but then I don't need performance, and as they are cheap and not fitted specifically for me I'm not bothered if I lose them.
We have roller bags with solid bases, so I just wrap them up to protect the clasps and stick them in the bottom of the bag.

I used to just put them in as a separate item of hold luggage which was fine so long as you didn't exceed the total weight allowance (which was typically quite generous). Some airlines like Easyjet then changed the rules so that you could only take one item of hold luggage which made it more difficult unless you have a really large hold bag so started taking my ski boot bag as my hand luggage item. |
Don't easyjet allow a boot bag, as well as skis, if you pay for ski carriage? Their sporting goods charge is currently £37 each way for "skis and/or boots."
We've not tried it ourselves, however, as we travel with our ski boots in hand luggage.

The beauty about the ski boot bag under EJ ski luggage policy is that its like getting another check in bag for sod all. Carry your precious ski boots in hand luggage and load up in the boot bag the things you don’t want to put into you ski bag with the sharp edges involved. They never check whats in them.

If you take a ski bag do they check you actually have skis in it? or is it a cheap way of getting a hold bag and a boot bag?

I was reliably informed that, for a school ski trip in 2017-18, easyJet checked a snowboard bag and charged for each of the pairs of skis in it. My daughter was allowed to take her own skis the year before; my son was not allowed the following year (without paying for the extra baggage charges, anyway). Maybe it was a one-off. Maybe if the initial answer to the question was "a snowboard" things might have been different.

I’ve had my ski bag checked once many years ago perhaps from chambery or another smaller airport.

I have a Dakine boot bag (discontinued) that packs boots 'tetris' style which cuts down the bulk . . .always overload it and have NEVER been checked on any flights (Easy Jet/Ryan Air/Eurowings/BA/Lufthansa) primarily because I carry it rucksack style . . . invisible at check-in and by the time you've run through speedy boarding your on the plane and its stowed in the overhead locker . . .!
Footnote - I am going insane - already commented on this post thrice and at the beginning of the thread - getting old!

Not sure how cheap a ski bag is vs normal load bag but never had their contents checked on any airline I’ve used - EJ, BA or Swiss.

@Belch, EJ now define that as a cabin bag if it goes in the overhead locker and charge for it!!

Haven't booked EJ for a while (am doing more Thurs-Mon trips than Sat to Sat) and am finding BA cheaper (all in with ski carriage etc) than both EJ & Ryan Air etc these days . . .

Noting that all thing in skiing are expensive, I think boot bags are outrageously expensive, even the 'cheaper' ones (a shaped bit of nylon with a strap) are +£30 in decathlon! I have an old school (huge) laptop bag that I can just about squeeze mine into!

Always carry on; IMV boots are the one thing that are so personal it would be a real problem if lost (especiilly with Colin on this forum spending so long to fit the perfect set of boots).
I use one of these brilliant bags which makes the bag look like a briefcase and fits under the seat; I've never been stopped when carrying in this bag.

I have the exact same but from Lange. DO you just take this on are you free carry on? Or as extra carry on?
Last 2 times, i have paid to take it as my extra carry on with EJ, but wondering if i can get away it as the free one....
The dimensions are slightly (4cm in length) over the "allowed", so curious as to other people experience..

...Not for those of us who travel extremely light and only take the essentials My 45 x 36 x 20 cm carry on bag (ie easyjet's maximum size for a free bag) is big enough for my ski boots and ski kit (trousers, polo, gloves, goggles, socks). Plus toiletries, phone charger, spare undies/socks and a book |
I know this is an old post, but how?! I've got a bag that's pretty much just to the EJ sizings and can just about fit my boots in and maybe some socks and gloves (allowing for putting things inside the boots). It will just about fit in the little size checking thing, but I usually have to stand on it to lift the bag back out |
The EJ regs are: - 45 x 36 x 20cm (free small cabin bag)
- 56 x 45 x 25cm (paid larger cabin bag)
My Thule Chasm has to be paid for at 23 x 35 x 55 cm. But I'm carrying a pair of AT boots plus a pair of race snowboard bindings in there. So as @mountainaddict suggests, without the spare pair of bindings in there, I'd be fine with just the free bag. AT boots are a bit skinnier than some ski boots, mind, so there's that.
For more traditional airlines, you typically get to take both of those bags along, obviously depending on exactly which fare you choose.
But I reckon most folk carry too much stuff. I'm kind of fascinated at what they carry in those massive suitcases. I mean, I get it if you're emigrating or something, but what are they carrying? Tins of bake beans?

@phil_w, I know the EJ rules, I just don't get how it all fits in. My boots are stretching the bag to the absolute limits of the dimensions and I can hardly zip the bag up. Okay then bag has wheels so could be a little more efficient, but they don't take up a huge amount of space. Do you have small feet or something?
As for what people take, I guess it depends on what they're doing and how many of them there are. E.g I could check in on my own but often travelling with my old man, so one of us checks in the ski bag, the other checks a hold bag. If I'm going self catering then sometimes that needs more stuff, so this week I'm taking a sleeping bag and pillow. The helmet takes up a good chunk of space too. And yes, sometimes we'll take tins of food too
For sure though, there is stuff that I don't need, but I'll be taking a big bag anyway so I may as well fill it with stuff that will make the week more pleasant or cheaper

I don’t fly often but when I do I book an EJ “large cabin bag”.
It is a TUMI roller case which is expandable (when expanded it is over the maximum size). In go boots with socks, buffs etc inside, around them go base layers, couple of T-shirts for evening, underwear, maybe a midlayer. Got some plug-in boot dryers in also. When fully packed apply pressure and zip it down to the unexpanded size.
My backpack has gloves and spare gloves, shell jacket and trousers, helmet with 2x goggles inside, charger cables/adapter plug.
iPad in its sleeve in front pocket of roller bag, toiletries in same place (makes security easy, only one place to fish stuff out of).
I wear jeans, jumper, walking boots and light down jacket (acts as mid layer if it is really extreme). Pockets have passport, wallet, phone.
What else do you need?

I guess I never carry stuff I don't use, so there's that
My tactics are - wheeled cabin bag for stuff I can't let them lose.
- personal item for helmet, big camera and goggles
- very light snowboard bag in hold
With "low cost" carriers I therefore have to pay for 2 bags. The guys who take dancing clothes & spare shoes will need more space...

@DJL, so your backpack is the small bag size? How does that work with a helmet, because mine isnt going to easily fit in 200mm.
As I'm already checking in some skis anyway I usually just book a hold bag. I'm sure I could do similar to you, but the hold bag gives the option of a few more things for added convenience during the week.

@SnoodyMcFlude, it's a squeeze for sure but just about makes it. I didn't want to go down the route of hanging it on the outside but if I had done it would have been a doddle to get everything in.

b]@phil_w[/b], I wouldn't class them dancing shoes, but I usually travel in shorts and flip flops so generally a pair of shoes in the hold bag. I much prefer travelling light through the airport and making security as simple as possible.
Clearly this is a personal failing on my part though, I shall try harder in future to not pack anything in the hold.
