Is it ok to order the day 2 test after flying out but before coming back as well? Or do the airlines require the reference when boarding the outbound flight?

it's a UK thing so you just need a reference for the UK PLF so I guess you can order any time. IIRC c19testing sent through the code automatically within a few minutes of ordering

I can't speak for airlines practices but I booked my day 2 test a few days before leaving Italy when driving home. Think it's the same for airlines. Your test code is needed for the PLF form on your return.

Forgive my stupidity, BUT I still can't anything official that states whether 16 year children need one jab or two for a Green Pass.

I don't think it's stupidity there are lots of questions about that.
not having kids I don't really pay attention to that but have you tried the c19verifac app on the QR code for the one dose? that is the source of truth as far as establishments are concerned so if someone here could try that it might help (of course it might all change...)

I can't answer it for you Jcosh..I'm just normal guy trying to offer some links that may help (as I am Italian and English) from my own experience and also not having kids means I've not really looked into it with any detail.
I'd have thought from what I've seen they would need 2 jabs though and if not they will need testing regularly. This may or may not be viable going forward wih the super green pass which removes some of that ability. Things keep changing in Italy and in Europe.
This article gives some more info suggesting kids over 12 have to meet the same green pass requirements as adults

Son currently 15 with one jab, so the NHS is not available to him at present. He will turn 16 days prior to departure and can then download the NHS app to check his one jab status for getting a Green Pass. But that's leaving things very late!
Between now and then I am simply trying to understand if one for a 16 year old is enough to get a Green Pass, but nobody seems to know the answer. HELP!

Looks like single jab is enough for current green pass but no update as for new super green pass.
It's not a going to be easy with travel and hoops to jump through sadly!

I’m going to jump in here, without a clear understanding of how the rules might have changed in the last weeks, but with recent experience of a trip to Sicily with a 13yr old and a 16 yr old at half-term, both unjabbed at that point. But just in case it helps…
We all needed fit2fly (and passenger locator form) to leave the UK - checked at Luton by EasyJet staff, who were very vigilant in checking it before we could drop our bags (having checked in online). All of this was easily done online, if a little pricey.
Once in Sicily, we were asked in a number (but not all) of restaurants to show our Green Pass. The NHS QR code was generally accepted, and everywhere except a museum was happy to let us in, even though the kids were unable to show a pass as UK & Italy vax requirements differed.
Where we encountered a problem was coming home because (at the time) all .gov, EasyJet and Ministeria sella Salute info was that you just needed to have booked a day 2 test, which you needed for your locator form. However, EasyJet (or Palermo airport) staff would not let the kids fly without a negative LFT within 24hrs of travel, done in a pharmacy, which would generate a QR code for the Green Pass.
Unfortunately, that required a mad dash in cab back from the airport to the nearest town, where they tested the kids, printed the result and gave us the paperwork, plus emailed a link to upload the result to the Italian equivalent of the NHS pass. Tests were about €20 each. Taxi was quite a bit more. And uploading it to the app proved impossible. But the QR codes were accepted. And we just made the flight. Some other Brits were less fortunate.
We were informed by the staff at the airport that the negative LFT was really only needed to access the departure lounge (according to Italian regs) rather than to board the plane. But necessary all the same.
Not sure if that helps, but I suppose the moral is… read the small print, don’t rely on airline/ travel agent (several people caught out at the same time called TA’s for advice, which was poor or at best uninformed) and check the local rules, as the Italians (rightly) will enforce govt regs.

Says that a green pass can issued if;
"first vaccination against the coronavirus (the Green Pass is issued 15 days after receiving the first vaccination)". However, if I scan my 1 of 2 QR Code (ie my first dose) on the VerificaC19 App it comes up RED. But if I scan my 2 of 2 QR Code (ie my second dose) on the VerificaC19 App it comes up GREEN. Great for me as a double dosed adult.
However, I wonder how it will react to a 16 year old with a single dose? Has anybody tried this?

I'm booked to travel from the US to Italy on 21 January. 2x jab + booster. Flying into Venice & getting a taxi to Arabba. 1/2 board in hotel, 6 days of skiing, taxi back to Venice. Fly home. Still time to pull the plug. Is this a dumb idea?

@choucas, who knows is the only answer possible, I know that’s not helpful, I’m not sure I would want to have to deal with the possibility of being in italy and getting stuck in a lockdown and trying to get back to the US, if I were you I would try and shift your skiing to be in the US if your able.
FWIW I’m booked to fly UK to Milan on 29/1, with accom deposit from last years cancelation carried over, I’m going to book a car to give me flexibility to go to a different area if Courmayuer is closed. Car can be cancelled up to 48hrs before.

@choucas, if I lived in the US I wouldn’t be bothering with the possible hassles of coming to Europe, not when you have skiing there in the US and in Canada. It’s too unpredictable a situation IMO.
It’s a bit different for us as it’s only 1.5-2 hours on a plane but every couple of days something new happens or so it feels!

@choucas, is it dumb? We’ll only know in retrospect but it certainly carries a few risks. The dolomites are great but they will still be there next year.
Have you made sure you have an Italian compliant QR code ? Would it cause you problems if you lost money? Had to isolate on arrival and got stuck in Italy for an extra week and never skied? Or maybe get stuck for longer due to borders closing or flights reducing? Are you happy spending ca 16hrs on planes and 4 hrs in taxis wearing a mask ? Etc

No idea but I have had an email from Crystal this evening asking me if I want to change my trip on 12th Dec to something else free of charge. It is a generic email though it doesn’t mention Italy specifically, it just says something along the lines of that the day 2 PCR on return to the UK might put some people off so if you want to change it, you can free of charge but let us know by 5th Dec if you do!

We also had an email from Crystal this morning about our trip to Selva on 20th Dec.
Says if you can pass the new super green pass requirements (which they say is FULLY vaccinated or recovered within 6 months) then holiday is on.
If not - we can either amend for free (and get 10 % discount) or take a full refund . We have to decide 14 days ahead of travel (so 6th Dec which is when the new regs come in).
Our 14 year old only has one jab. No way to get a second and no way to prove this with a QR code anyway.
So we will take a refund . This holiday was booked in Summer 2020 (when things looked sort of alright...). Bumped from last Xmas. Been paid in full since about Sept 2020.

I read it in the Adige.it, it is in Italian , I am fluent in Spanish and could work out the gist of the article . They mentioned 20 new villages to enter zona Rossa. Apologies if I got it wrong but I am pretty certain that is what they said.

Rules have been updated for the Alto Adige region from 6th Dec to mid Jan.
Brief summary
Masks inside and also outside in busy areas where social distance can’t be maintained (Piazzas etc)
Green pass required for ski lifts, hotels and looks like pretty much any indoor activity. Daily validation of GreenPass to enable ski pass for the day.
Super green pass (vaxed or recovered, not a negative test) to drink and dine indoors apart from in your own hotel
