Before the PSB, a got confirmation from Bristol Airport that, subject to carriers approval, security would allow boots through in hand luggage. Both he and I had no problems, he with his boots in a small "hand luggage" sized suitcase, be in a pretty small back pack. Unfortunately one of my friends who flew from Bristol just before Christmas had no end of bother, being informed at security that he couldn't take them through, being escorted back to check in desk, and, after much toing and froing, was eventually allowed on board with the boots going in the hold after he threatened not to board the flight at all (after his original case had, no doubt, already been loaded). Not sure what the outcome would have been had things been quieter, but there was such a queue to get through security in the first place that, after all the faffing, he was the last to board and further hassles would, no doubt (and especially if it had involved removing his hold case) have resulted in the flight missing it's slot.
In my opinion, having had recent confirmation from the airport manager that boots are not, in themselves, a risk, it was just a security guard being an idiot, but, as always, we the public are subject to such whims.

thefatcontroller, Maybe, but if the Airport manager, having been specifically asked to check security implications in his own airport, says it's OK, then the messgae needs to be passed down.
snowball, Different airports have different policies, this was what prompted an earlier thread on the subject.

what is the rational for banning ski boots from the cabin?

Christopher, Either that they are heavy and can be used as a weapon, or that they are heavy and may hurt someone if they fall from an overhead locker when it is opened.

I wouldnt want ski boots falling out of the lockers onto my head.
I couldnt see them being used as a weapon though.
The joys of hiring equipment! especially at the start of the season when they've got all the brand new equipment.

Christopher, to me, it doesn't matter whether boots are brand new or 2 seasons old, If they aren't well fitted, they aren't as good as my own!

OK, I just checked Luton and they don't have any security ban on skiboots in hand-luggage (but said particular airlines might have a private ban).

Never had any problem taking ski boots in hand luggage on scheduled airlines. Never had my hand luggage weighed either.

I'm with Guvnor, I pack my ski boots in my suitcase and still come in under the allowance. The secret is not packing stuff that you do not need. How many times do you return from holiday with unworn clothes? Don't take full bottles of shower gel or shampoo, just take what you need for the days that you are away. There are many ways to save weight. If you are in a hotel use the laundry service, I do and it means that you can travel lighter, plus the costs are minimal compared to the cost of the holiday.

i thought with the majority of airlines. Easyjet included let you take as much weight (within reason) in handluggage as long as it is only 1 item.

I aked Bristol Airport why they have banned ski boots in hand luggage - this is the reply from Customer Services:
"Thank you for your email enquiry.
It would be best to speak to the airline that you are flying with to explain their policy regarding ski boots, as individual airlines have their own rules.
Yours sincerely
Customer Services
Bristol International Airport"
I have pointed out that the ban is in fact theirs and have copied and pasted the relevant section - lets see what they say to that

There's more money to be made from making you check them as hold luggage.

So to summarise - various airports (not all) and various airlines (again, not all) have brought in a ban for carrying boots on as hand luggage. To ascertain which airports and which airlines will take hours of investigation, and the information you receive may not be correct anyway, or you may find yourselves faced with a hostile Security Guard who is having a bad day who is just going to single you out and not let you carry them on anyway. This will then leave you even more aggrieved, no doubt ruin your holiday, resulting in you having a breakdown, losing your job, your family having you commited to a secure dependancy unit and ultimately an expensive divorce, meaning no further skiing holidays in the foreseeable future
Alternatively, stick them in your hold baggage, and just get on with it

A bit O/T but I had a look at Gatwick's security guidelines and I must admit that the MP3 part of this "MP3 and CD players, portable DVD players and laptops need to be removed from your luggage to be screened separately. section was news to me. I've been through a few UK airports since the rules were tightened up and have never seen a notice about MP3 players (laptops, yes) and have never been stopped when my MP3 player/ipod was in my hand luggage.

I'm a little late finding this thread, but it was I that got the e-mail confirmation from customer services at Bristol Airport that ski boots were acceptable in hand luggage. The e-mail is dated 4/10/07. I've since flown easyjet from bristol-toulouse on the 14/12 and from barcelona-bristol on 23/12 with my ski boots as hand luggage, (though in a small suitcase, not a boot bag) with out the slightest problem. This seemingly recent change of tack has me worried as I'm off to Innsbruck from Bristol on the 18th & was hoping to do the same again !

Think I'm going to have to buy a bigger backpack then, 'cos my boots barely fit my current one & that's a 100litre job ! & no, my boots aren't that big, just not backpack shaped !!

I've carried boots hand baggage in a boot bag through Heathrow many times with no problems. As long as it's your only bag and not ridiculously heavy, I doubt you would have any problem. They can be a real pain to get in overhead lockers though since they don't squash down. The way to solve this is to simply remove one and store it seperately.
But I wouldn't worry too much about lost luggage. I fly maybe 50 or more times a year with all sorts of airlines and have done for the last 15 years. I've only had luggage lost maybe a couple of times and I can't remember the last time. I've never lost any luggage permanently. But maybe I'm just lucky!

uktrailmonster, I haven't lost any bags, but I have had delayed bags on US transfers 3 times, and my boots are the thing I least want delayed.

Has anyone successfully travelled from Manchester with boots as Hand Luggage?
I always have done in the past, but am a bit worried by some of the posts in this thread about other airports taking a "no ski boots" stance.
I'm travelling with BMI BABy who despite having ridiculous T&Cs about skis, allow 1 hand luggage item per passenger with no weight restriction "but must fit in the overhead locker".
Manchester Airports website has a size restriction on hand luggage (which my boot bag is less than) and lists no liquids or sharp objects as being the prohibited items. No mention of ski boots.
Anyone travelled recently?

Just sent a Q to Easy jet, all they did was reply quoting the web site statement that neither confirms nor denies the acceptability of boots as carry-on.
No positive answer!

Odd - I flew from Stansted on 27/12/07, and both I and my wife had our boots in our hand luggage, and had no problems with either Ryanair check-in or the security staff, and no issues coming back through Salzburg either.

Pack your boots in your luggage and fill your boot bag with clothes/towels etc and then take it on as hand luggage .
That way you get your boots and bag with you without paying extra.

This is a brilliant service for all major resorts in Switzerland but it is expensive. I have known my luggage arrive before me. Most hotels will send a porter to collect it from the station and check it in for you on your return. About £10 a case but well worth it if you have a few changes.
