Gillian, You may have read that there would be two meetings in the the Open Letter from the BSS Performance Director, last paragraph:
"... In addition I will be running two Alpine forums in Meribel. The first will be on the or around the 31st March, (senior and juniors pathways), and the second will be on or around the 2nd April, (U16 Pathways), in Meribel. These dates will be firmed up and moved to fit when the majority of folks are around."

Nothing on BSS website publishing date/time/location! Are these meetings held in secret?

stewart woodward, This one was for the benefit of those here for the sen/jun races.
There will be another - 'we will be presenting the BSS pathway and evidence on the 2nd of April an hour before the race meeting about 4pm.'
gryphea, Plenty to add and will add this when I have time to type it out and add it to a post, possibly later today.

From the Racer Ready report -
In the subsequent hours after the meeting finished many felt that the performance of one member of the board in particular had left a lot to be desired.
This being Konrad Bartelski, who seemed to have the opinion that no one in the room but his staff new what they were talking about and where British skiing is going. There was more than an air of arrogance in his demeanour and a comment such as 'was that someone laughing over there?' to a noise had more than an air of schoolteacher about it.
I think it's safe to say that he gained little respect from his performance last night.

I think Neil @ Racer Ready summed up the meeting accurately and constructively. Good job.
My tuppence worth....
Dave Edwards did a competent job of presenting where BSS are, Paddy Bless him did not start well tripping over himself as he rose to open his presentation, and looked understandably nervous., Sean's brief interjection was about the most authoratative speech of the evening.
Finally Konrad, in the trenches, was asking for help from the other side (us) but admitted communication was not one of his skills, I would dare to suggest that empathy and athlete support could be added to the list.
Clearly people are not at their best when they feel they are under fire.
There was some good, news Dave Ryding will get some funding towards Sochi, very different from the last Olympics and the untimely demise of SSGB.
The disparity between who BSS did not send to the World Champs( Dougie and TJ ) who had attended previous World Championships, if you don't mind!, and the skier cross / cross country athletes who went, was unfair despite the explanation of different discipline commitees by Paddy M.
BSS you need a media specialist to get the message out there., and promote our dedicated hard working Alpine Athletes, who are feeling like the poor relations of the BSS family. We appreciate you do not have funding to give all athletes a programme, but some of the suggestions that came out of the meeting do not cost money. (sending people to the world Champs for instance)
Perhaps Neil Mcquoid could work with you on the publicity/media side. Have you considered Facebook! ?
Thank goodness for Sir John Ritblat and Delancey, well done Dave on your Europa Cup success, and to Jack Gower for an awesome performance in the GS at British Champs. No 2 in the world ranking for his age I beleive.

problem is it is not a paid position, (AFAIALTB) and Neil is a one man operator trying to run his business of a magazine/ race reports/pictures... doesn't leave a lot of time to work on stuff for free..... the other problem as i see it is that Neil is independent right now, and at times is pretty outspoken about the poo-poo state of the sport( a good thing)... being employed by BSS would be a gagging order on one of the few people who can put everyone's points across

Our son (9) has been skiing since he was 3, he skis blacks in a straight line as well as having the confidence to repeatedly try and 180 over moguls however when I was speaking to Wayne (of the O) last season he watched him ski fast down a red and decided that he wasn't up to scratch to go to a training camp. Apparently holding the perfect carve at 9 yrs old is more important in race training than going flat out down hill.
You try telling that to Bode Miller.
Whilst I do agree that technique is important we have still got skiers that are held back by an inability to go very fast, doesn't that tell us something?

homers double, All a bit puzzling as the point of a training camp is to iron out technical issues and most will accept any kid who can ski a red run confidently (and in control).
However, perhaps it was the wrong camp, or perhaps there really are some issues to address first. After all, most would say it is technical issues which prevent our skiers going fast and not lack of ability to straightline - it's the bends which catch us out not the straights.

This matched my observation three years ago:
Quote: |
We currently let our athletes disappear into the abyss of U18 and U21 international racing, while rewarding them once a year with trophies at nationals as they learn just how tough it is to be really good at ski racing on the international stage. The problem that the sport needs to address is how we look after these athletes. |
and this is pretty much what I suggested at the time. It shouldn't be difficult or expensive to implement for a Governing Body:
Quote: |
Support systems offering athletes (and parents) education, networking opportunities, access to appropriately trained people within sports science aspects, training in strength and conditioning, access to the ski industry and suppliers – all of this can be created by official channels and managed by parents. At the moment this isn’t there. |
