Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Flow

guess its one of those things that you know when you feel it or see it but is difficult to describe. Not helpful I realise!

But a practical example:
A mate and I had a weekend in Sestrierre recently and spent most of it making fresh tracks in the trees. On one chairlift we were agreeing that we were both skiing best when we let the skis run a bit, skied the trees faster and just reacted to terrain/obstacles as they came rather than try to pick a route. In those situations it requires not just technique but also CONFIDENCE in your technique or more specifically confidence that you can apply it somewhat AUTOMATICALLY. It is grooved. I think if you are doing that you are flowing...

jedster, Good description . . . it's that 'unconscious competence' that allows you to separate you body control from the ability to enjoy the moment . . . I call it the 'giggle reflex', when everything clicks and you can't stop feeling wonderful. It's what makes you whoop with joy and smile till it hurts.

The trick then is to work to achieve that every time you slide.

Alternatively Rohypnol might help you get there quicker. Mind you a quick wiki suggests increased risks of falls and hip fractures so it's clearly a fine line.

Was delighted by the price and taste of the Alps' favourite tramp juice in Munster bar recently, only enhanced by the lovely company as we bitterly mocked the carefree folly of floppy haired young Brit seasonnaires and bet on STDs.

I had an interesting discussion about flow with Nick Quinn, who introduced it to BASI when he was the training director. He told me he realised there was a problem with the way BASI assessed candidates when the UK number 1 bump skier failed his level 4..... on bumps! Hence the introduction of the concept of flow, which in my mind refers to the seemingly effortless, fluid performance of the real expert who is in the zone.

evski, but, but, but, how a BASI1 would teach bumps is surely different to how the competitive bumps skiers would ski them?

Not much flow going on @ Hemel today, more netting on display then your average trawler & unguided missiles all over the shop.

gatecrasher, evski, I do get the impression that BASI are forever playing catchup with their teaching criteria. I've yet to read the current Manuals and I'm hoping to be pleasantly surprised but apocryphal tales like evski's do make me wonder if BASI is the right route to follow.

kitenski, been over here too long Embarassed catch-up . . . My impression is that when BASI formed the decided to re-write the rules as it were in what became known as 'basispeak'. You've been reassuring me that this has been changing to more resemble programs that are clearer in their terminology.

Masque, I think you might be reading too much into micro weeny chat here. I'm sure BASI has its flaws but most BASI trainers I've seen in the field seem to be thoroughly modern in their approach. Sure there are lots of L1 instructors who don't seem to be particularly fluid but that's down to progression not an antiquated system. Also licensing a bunch of CSIA material seems thoroughly sensible if it represents best in class.

fatbob, I read a basi manual from 12 years ago Shocked not even I could mangle a language that well. I'm getting a better vibe but I'm not fully reassured. We'll see.

Masque, the new manual is much much better but still is a bit too focussed on the technical and doesn't explore other aspects of skiing such as Tactical, psychological and physical in enough detail... The coaching courses do and if you, as i suspect you may be , are more interested in that aspect of teaching the Basi coaching pathway may be a better / complementary pathway for you. i use much more from the coaching courses than the early stage instructor courses... Seems that Teaching Flow is introduced later, correctl imo by basi by memory on my L3 and L4 teaching modules I had to deliver sessions on Flow... You can certainly teach flow , it is a hard thing to do as a teacher but is possible if you understand your client well..

skimottaret, Thank you . . . I have to be honest about my abilities, they need quantifying and I need to have the technical structure as a foundation to either build on or ignore . . . can't break the rules without knowing the rules. I have no idea where or how far I can go with this, I do enjoy breaking down complex interactions into their components and assessing the relationship values . . . at the same time I used to love coaching little kids on the tramp which is all about simple fun and learning from play. I will probably chafe at the basi L1/2 manuals but some things must be endured in silence wink
Cheers, John

Just going back to the music thing, I have not skied to music, other than in my mind for many years, but these words may make me change my mind!

THERE IS NO YESTERDAY
NO TOMORROW
JUST HERE AND NOW
PUT IN YOUR EARPLUGS
LET THE MUSIC FILL YOUR BODY
FEEL YOUR PULSE
LET YOUR HEART PUMP
THE MUSIC THROUGH YOUR VEINS
START MOVING WITH THE SOUND
LET YOURSELF GO
LETS ROCK
ROCK AND FLOW

I found that thinking about/concentratimg on where I'm going to turn after the next turn helps with flow.

It leaves the back part of your brain to deal with the turn coming up.
