Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Great spectator sport, was it really 3 years ago? Shame it doesn't get more coverage.

These are the GB team Olympic qualifications stamndards for both Alpine & Skier-X direct from BSS.

Sochi 2014 Freestyle Skiing
BSS Board 9 of 11 Nov 2012
Schedule 3
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
FREESTYLE – SKI CROSS
1. The maximum number of athletes per NOC is 26 (a maximum of 14 males or 14 females) and is limited to a maximum of four entries per gender in each of the Freestyle events (Aerials, Moguls, Ski Cross, Ski Halfpipe and Ski Slopestyle).
2. The number of FIS quota spots is 32 for MEN and 32 for WOMEN. The Olympic Quota Allocation List of 20 January 2014 will determine the number of quota spots for each NOC.
3. The quota places are assigned to the NOC and not to the individual that won the quota place.
4. The BOA will only accept as qualification for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (“Sochi 2014”) any athlete who has placed in the top 30 in a FIS World Cup Event or FIS World Championships and achieves a minimum of 80 points on the Olympic FIS Points List (as of 20 January 2014).
5. In addition to clause 4 above the BOA will only accept as qualification for Sochi 2014 any male athlete that achieves a minimum of 3 top 30 finishes in a registered FIS World Cup event, including FIS 2013 World Championships, within 4% of the first placed qualification time, during the Olympic Qualification Period (1 July 2012 – 19 January 2014);

Sochi 2014 Alpine
BSS Board 7 of 7 Nov 2012
Schedule 1
OLYMPIC QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
ALPINE
1. The maximum number of athletes per NOC is 22 (a maximum of 14 males or 14 females) and is limited to a maximum four entries per gender in each of the events (Downhill, Super-G, Giant Slalom, Slalom and Super Combined).
2. The allocation of quota places is in accordance with the IOC-FIS Olympic Qualification Systems document for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (“Sochi 2014”).
3. Athletes must meet the FIS “A” qualification ranked criteria by being in the top 500 in their respective event on the FIS Points List published at the end of the qualification period (20 January 2014).
4. Athletes must also fulfil the Olympic FIS Points List eligibility requirements as outlined in clause 3.5 of the IOC-FIS Olympic Qualification Systems document (Downhill, Super G and Super Combined = max 80 FIS Points / Slalom and Giant Slalom = max 140 FIS points).
5. Along with the requirements as set out in Clauses 3 and 4 above, the BOA will only accept a nomination for Sochi 2014 any individual who achieves one top 30 placing in the FIS World Cup Points Standings at the end of the 2012/2013 season or the FIS World Cup Points Standings of 19 January 2014 OR at least two of the following during the Olympic Qualification Period (1 July 2012 – 19 January 2014):
(a) 1 top 30 finish in a registered FIS World Cup Event in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G or Down Hill; or
(b) 1 top 20 finish in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G or Down Hill at the 2012/13 FIS World Championships; or
(c) 1 top 15 in Super Combined within 3% of the winner’s time at the 2012/13 FIS World Championships;
(d) 2 top 10 places in any Europa Cup (excluding indoor) races; or
(e) a FIS World ranking of 100 or below in the FIS Points List of 19th of January 2014 in the qualified discipline. (Note: this does not include the FIS base list)

Pretty tough to get into either really.
They have raised the bar for qualification as the BOA will not take anyone who will not get into the top 1/2 of the field. So much for the Olympic spirit![/b]

Plugboy,

Qualifying standards seem very high. Do we have any atheletes who would qualify at the moment?

stewart woodward, I think if I read it right that Chemmy qualifies under alpine rules, despite injuries she's currently ranked at 97 (combined) 38 in downhill and 43 in Super G, plus she has a 27th in Super G at St Anton and a 30th at Val d'Isere in the downhill and a 25th at the lake louise downhill which I think means currently she qualifies for both disciplines by section 5: a (x2 for DH and x1 SG) plus e for both

D G Orf,

Having done a little research, TJ Baldwin & Dougie Crawford do not currently qualify Puzzled

If we do not have any atheletes competing will the 'officials' still feel the need to attend Confused

Agreed. The current qualification levels, set by BSS, not the BOA incidentally, for world champs and olympics mean that we will not send many athletes at all, denying some of our better athletes a chance of competing in these prestigious events where, by virtue of the fact that the bigger alpine nations are restricted in the number of athletes they can enter per discipline, they have a far better chance of a half decent result.

Our current performance director obviously believes that alpine skiing needs teaching a lesson and has excluded all but the 1 or 2 athletes at the very top.

Irish run with their best athletes, provided they are under 140 points usually. They currently have several athletes hovering around the 100-120 mark that they will be likely to send.

Maybe some of 'our' athletes need to take a leaf out of Jack Charltons book, start drinking GUINESS, and qualify to ski for Ireland if their dream is to ski at the Olympics wink

stewart woodward, Some of your athletes all ready do through their parents but do not have better points than some of the Irish Athletes born at home. But if you are entitled to a FIS license for any nation through the rules I am sure you are more than welcome. SAI currently have Austiran.Canadian and British born Irish Racers

The SAI send most Irish athletes on the B standard qualification set by FIS/Olympic committee ,(<140 Fis Points) for Olympic and World events.
They have had two Female athletes who was born in Ireland and raised in France who has meet the A standard. If you have an A standard Athlete you get more than one place but all athletes have to meet the A standard, and for B standard one athlete for Slalom and GS no B standard for Ski Cross or Speed events.

The SAI do not always choose the lowest pointed racer they have a few criteria for selection and the male Athlete who sent to Vancouver really raised the bar for those that want to go on the B standard. Couple of the up & coming teenagers that Philbo has mentioned have good potential to go a lot further and have skied with 2 of them this winter! Both lovely lads with a good work ethic for the most part.
