The FIS has rejectect Lindsey Vonn's request to compete in a men's World Cup downhill race. It said that "one gender is not entitled to particpate in races of the other" and that "exceptions will not be made to the FIS Rules"....See: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20137791

I think the most telling comment is this one:

Alpine Canada president Max Gartner said in a statement he was disappointed with the governing body's decision.
"I saw it as a great opportunity to raise the profile of the sport by attracting interest from people who do not normally follow ski racing, particularly in North America," he said.
"It would have provided a great platform to showcase our sport and the amazing athletic performances of our athletes. |
While I feel sorry for skiing fans in the USA, I don't think this would have achieved what they thought it would. In fact it may have had exactly the opposite effect. None of the women versus men events have ever been anything other than a bit of a weird side show and just provided more ammunition for the separation of the two sexes in competition.

red 27, that's the point judging by the way she competes in the ladies championship she has a pair, so why not let her go up against the men? Plenty of men get beaten each race by other men so I can't understand the fuss. If she comes 29th then she will have placed roughly middle of the field. In a normal distribution looking at her time alone you wouldn't be able to tell her sex.
Anyway, since they have said that, why is she still allowed to race on men's skis? Surely that goes against their justification for not letting her race??

Mt, So what? It is not the equipment that determines the race!

First of all, this thing is just media hype... just as pretty much everything with her is. She's not skiing on men skis She's skiing a bit longer and stiffer women version and not men skis.
Second... there's no rule that you can't come with skis longer then required. There are pretty strict rules what's minimum length, minimum radius etc. If you feel like, you can bring 210cm long skis to slalom, as their width under binding is minimum 63mm and max. standing height is 50mm. So by the rules, you are perfectly fine skiing men skis on women tour. Problem is, that courses are not set with distances between gates suiting men skis... that's why noone ski them. And no, not even Lindsey skis 35m GS skis on courses set for 30m skis (or 27m skis last year on courses set for 23m skis).

I stand to be corrected, but i understood the physics of skiing are similar to that of a boat going through the water. When designing a yacht the shape and length of the hull will create a theoretical top speed for the hull. Skiing is similar due to the beading effect of water droplets providing the "float" and a longer ski has a higher theoretical top speed so in the speed events she does have an advantage over other skiers running shorter skis.

Mt, the skier, as with the helm of the boat, has to be able to control the equipment and use the speed created to the best advantage as well as make the best course decisions.
