All this stuff about Lance Armstrong and the cyclists - some of the stories coming out are mentioning fridges with bottles/bags of blood in them that could then be used for the cyclists. It got me thinking - compare this to the Alain Baxter nasal inhaler story that cost him his bronze ! Bags of blood versus an innocent nasal inhaler. Baxter must still be gutted.
The more I think about it the more incredible it is that we actually had a skier on the podium for an Olympic slalom event.
Can anyone ever see this happening again ? Just getting a top 10 would be a near miracle when you think what our ski racers are up against, financially and logistically.

The IOC changed the rules not long after they stripped Baxter of his medal too I believe so a similar incident couldn't happen again. If Baxter had been Austrian I wonder if he'd of still lost his medal....
It was a disgrace that he lost it imo.

skir67, iirc it was rumoured to be because of the Austrians that he lost his medal...

As far as I'm concerned, Alain Baxter is Scotland's only Olympic medal-winning skier. The IOC can stick it where the sun shines not.

I have no problem with Baxter being excluded for what was found, even if he took it in all innocence, sorry but rules are rules.
I DO have a problem with the 19 other US athletes found with the same trace as Baxter not being flagged and excluded. If a rule exists it should be applied impartially and evenly.

Ok clarification, there have been 19 US olympic medalists who have tested positive for banned substances but allowed to keep medals between 1988 and 2000.
Link to supporting article here, taken from Alain Baxters Wikipedia entry. Doesn't list the names though...

Alain lost his medal due to an ancient test which could not distinguish between isomers of a substance, the IOC said that although he had been cleared of any wrong doing they could not reinstate the medal as "at the time of the test being carried out it showed a banned substance (or what it thought was a banned substance)" they changed the test so that an up to date test was used which could separate the performance enhancing V the non performance enhancing isomers of the same base substance
Raich refused the medal and told the IOC in no uncertain terms to give it back to the guy who won it fair and square

So is the medal still sitting with the IOC doing nothing then? Or did they offer it out to the next guy in the standings until someone took it?

Raich refused the medal... |
you sure? Can swear I saw pictures of him being presented with it. Medals mean money so my understanding is that his federation twisted his arm and made him accept it. But I could be wrong, it has been known.

From Ski Racing:

Appropriately, even one of Raich's two bronze medals at the 2002 Olympics were awarded to him in near-obscurity. He had crossed fourth in the slalom at Salt Lake but improved one position when Britain's Alain Baxter was stripped of his third placing after testing positive for a banned stimulant.
At the time, Raich refused to accept the medal. But under intense pressure from his national federation, he reluctantly received it at a small ceremony in Austria almost 10 months later.

From Baxters Wiki

Reports suggested that Benjamin Raich ... gave his bronze medal to Alain suggesting it was rightly his, but this has been denied by Baxter. |

The really frustrating thing is that the North American version of the Vics Inhaler contained the banned substance.
However the European one apparently did not....

Haggis_Trap, you can get quite a buzz off American vics inhalers if you take a few squirts at once

^ I would well believe it....
Alain hadn't yet finished on the podium that winter (though he had 3 top 10s and was knocking on the door). It was really warm on race day and the super slushy course suited him perfectly. Though apparently he had been suffering from a cold the week before. He skied the course just like it was a slushy Cairngorm spring day whilsts the other racers crashed out or stradled gates.
Baxter was cleared of deliberate wrong doing by ISF / IOC - but tragically for UK skiing the rules had to applied.

Haggis_Trap, add in a bit of speed and it was just like he'd been partying in Aviemore all night before the race
