For pity's sake; the plural of ski is skis.
cat => cats
dog => dogs
ski => skis
It just follows the normal rules. What's so flippin' difficult about skis?

Ok I don't know altis,
"I have a pair of skis"
"I have a pair of skiis and a sticking 'i' key"
"You go into the bar, I'll watch the skies"
"The bindings come of my one of my skis" - "which one is it?" - "It's this ski's"
All perfectly cromulent.

I blame the confusion on the 'ii' in the adjective. It wigs people out.

Richard_Sideways, don't you mean when used as a present participle or a gerund (when used like a noun)?
I've never really tried to describe something as 'skii' before...

The rules for applying the '-ing' suffix are in play, if the 'e' or 'i' sound is silent, lose the letter, if it's pronounced, keep it.

I'm still confused how to use 'ski' as an adjective.
"I went on a great holiday last year but I found the weather a little ski."
Ahhhhh..... i got it now!!

Oh the problems the word "ski" gives us pedants...
"ski" as noun / verb / adjective: no problem:
I have one broken ski.
I ski on one leg.
"My ski instructor has no nose." "How does he smell?" "Terrible!"
"skis" as plural / 3rd person singular verb: also good:
I'll hire the pink skis please.
He skis like a constipated gorilla.
"skiing" as noun / present participle / adjective: also good:
Telemark skiing rules.
I am skiing like a fool.
"Where's my lucky skiing underwear?"
But the simple past tense and past participle, argh! We all know it's pronounced "skeed" but how the hell are we supposed to write it?
"skid" and "skied" are already existing words
Something like "ski-d", "ski-ed", or "ski:d" would probably make sense but still...
"ski'd" goes against everything I ever learned about inappropriate apostrophe usage, and yet that's what I've ended up using most of the time
|

ap96, great post. But I think the answer is 'skied', however counter-intuitive.

Pedantica, I think I will use the King James version:
...so Moses skiéd down unto the people, and spake unto them...
...and they said unto Moses, "skiest thou on two stone tablets? Surely thou hast too much width underfoot for these conditions"...
