Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Skis, Skiis, Skies or Ski's?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
For pity's sake; the plural of ski is skis.

cat => cats
dog => dogs
ski => skis

It just follows the normal rules. What's so flippin' difficult about skis?

Ok I don't know altis,

"I have a pair of skis"
"I have a pair of skiis and a sticking 'i' key"
"You go into the bar, I'll watch the skies"
"The bindings come of my one of my skis" - "which one is it?" - "It's this ski's"

All perfectly cromulent.

I blame the confusion on the 'ii' in the adjective. It wigs people out.

Richard_Sideways, don't you mean when used as a present participle or a gerund (when used like a noun)?

I've never really tried to describe something as 'skii' before...

The rules for applying the '-ing' suffix are in play, if the 'e' or 'i' sound is silent, lose the letter, if it's pronounced, keep it.

I'm still confused how to use 'ski' as an adjective.

Oh the problems the word "ski" gives us pedants...

"ski" as noun / verb / adjective: no problem:
I have one broken ski.
I ski on one leg.
"My ski instructor has no nose." "How does he smell?" "Terrible!"

"skis" as plural / 3rd person singular verb: also good:
I'll hire the pink skis please.
He skis like a constipated gorilla.

"skiing" as noun / present participle / adjective: also good:
Telemark skiing rules.
I am skiing like a fool.
"Where's my lucky skiing underwear?"

But the simple past tense and past participle, argh! We all know it's pronounced "skeed" but how the hell are we supposed to write it?

"skid" and "skied" are already existing words
Something like "ski-d", "ski-ed", or "ski:d" would probably make sense but still...
"ski'd" goes against everything I ever learned about inappropriate apostrophe usage, and yet that's what I've ended up using most of the time Smile

ap96, great post. But I think the answer is 'skied', however counter-intuitive.

Pedantica, I think I will use the King James version:

...so Moses skiéd down unto the people, and spake unto them...
...and they said unto Moses, "skiest thou on two stone tablets? Surely thou hast too much width underfoot for these conditions"...

Yeeeeaaah......but! What about the confusion about whether I skid my turns like a God or whether I skied my turns like a God.....obviously you actually skid your turns like a gaper, but not, apparently when writing it down Laughing

Shocked
Has there ever been a shorter post with more spelling and grammar mistakes? Any advance on five? I'm
always amused that those who say it doesn't matter rolling eyes are those that haven't got a clue.

I once corrected a letter where a workmate had written 'effects' instead of 'affects.' She went mental, said I was just being pedantic and it didn't matter anyway. So I pointed out the following illustration:

'Smoking effects pregnancy' wink Hmmm.........
