So, if i get this correctly we have a diphthong in the word 'Deux' to "Du" because of the vowel proximity and another transition from 'Du' to 'duz' because of the A in Alps... a double diphthong, and in this economic climate thats not bad!

I've always struggled with Les Menuires!
I tried saying "Lay Menu-'ere" and got some strange looks from the lady in the ticket office thingy!!

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Richard_Sideways, it's much more simple than that. You won't go far wrong, as a Brit in France (cos nobody expects us to be perfick) if you say Lay Derze Alp. The Derze rhymes with Furs. If it was 12 Alps, it would be Lay Dooze Alp. With the Dooze rhyming with booze.
Forget dipthongs.....

bogeylogey, Les Menuires = Lay Men-weer (weer = weir, as in a small man made waterfall in a stream kind of thing)

Excellent!! Thank you very much. Should I ever find myself in the ticket office with that lady again (hmmm!!) then she may not give me such a funny look!! Cheers

Maybe because you were saying it too slowly? Otherwise, I think Menu-'ere is actually closer to what it should be than Men-weir. But you do have to cram the component parts of that second syllable into the smallest possible space (not to mention pronounce the first syllable correctly - the 'e' is not as in 'men') to sound French!

Or I could just book to go elsewhere in future and save any further embarrassment!!

Not a run, rather a resort but Sauze D'Oulx is one that definitely caught me out before we went there. Only on the bus to resort did we hear how it should be pronounced. Whoops!

On the face of it easy L'Y in L2A, or perhaps not!
They've gone and changed the names of all the pistes there and it's something like Diable 2 now.

FiFi_Trixibell, so how is it pronounced? I've always wondered. Is it pronounced French stylee or Italian stylee? Or a mix of the two?

Well we pretty much pronounced it "Sow zee doo" without getting any funny looks! But I doubt many of us will ever quite get the pronounciations correct for some places compared to the native speakers! Someone else's description here probably better!

the Italians pronounce the name of the place in a different way to most people in the Uk, who call it "Sow-zay Doo". The Italians say something like "Sowwwwzeh Dulchay". |

I love it - huge forum of people that probably have more vertical altitude differences arguing about pronunciation,
Vertical altitude changes air pressure and hence affects not only the ear canal diamter and pressure on the ear drum, but also the vocal chords. So if you go up very high you hear and speak differently and if you go down to sea level as well. You then throw in humidity and it's not suprising that people actually hear sounds differently in different places, but they actually say them slightly differently, so you get a double whammy effect and then it's not surprsing that we have arguments / discussions about how things should be pronounced
Still, great fun though

This past week, i've discovered that Peisey is pronounced Payzee, as in Count Basie and his Orchestra, and NOT the 'other' way...

For all (well, most of) your pronunciation-of-funny-foreign-words needs -
Je vous présente - http://www.forvo.com/
Rheims is there - "RAANss" and Tignes - "TEEnya" but Cornegidouille, which kicked off this thread, isn't.

Not necessarily difficult to pronounce..... but there's a piste in Soldeu called "Fagina".
Jnr was too young to understand why I wanted his Mum to stand next to the sign to have her photo taken (he's not so innocent any more though).

Cheating I know since no one knows Icelandic but one of the blues at the ski area in Akureyri is called Ævintýraleiðin.
There's one street in downtown Reykjavik I still can't get my mouth around.
