Poster: A snowHead

If you have one of these policies, it may be pertinent to review the small print regarding off-piste skiing and maximum number of days covered before renewing.
It would appear it's no longer the deal it was previously.

Not sure if you're talking about a seperate travel policy or not, but the policy included with the UK Amex Platinum says:
Trip Length: You are covered for a maximum of 240 days in a 365 day period and for single Trips up
to a maximum duration of 120 consecutive days.
Winter and Special Sports Information: All benefits apply when participating in usual holiday sports
and activities, including winter sports. For example: canoeing, fishing, golf, horse riding, mountainbiking,
parascending, scuba-diving down to 30 metres, skiing (including off-piste with a guide) and
snowboarding (including off-piste with a guide), tennis, water-skiing.
GAP YEAR EXTENSION TO WORLDWIDE TRAVEL INSURANCE BENEFITS
When any of Your Children are travelling between full time education and employment, between
secondary and higher education, or when studying abroad (a “Gap Year”), the benefits under Section 1
shall be extended for the full duration of the Gap Year up to a maximum Trip of 365 consecutive days.
This benefit applies to only one Trip of up to 365 days continuous travel per Child.

I'm referring to the Annual Multi-trip Prestige Cover
Have a look at this post by Pam W
Bottom line is - if you renew your policy then don't assume the conditions are the same as when you first took it out - it may well be, and probably is the case that your policy is fine.. but don't assume - re-read the small print.

JamesIE, the terms have changed. Be careful about the small print in any renewal invitation. I've just cancelled my policy with them and shall have to search again for another which will allow up to 60 days trip length and no limits on skiing (every day you are on a "ski trip" would count as skiing, even if you spent half of them in bed....). the other important change is no cover for being off piste without a guide.
Might have to check up again on the SCGB one. The snowheads one won't be any use to me - trip lengths too short.
Or maybe British Mountaineering Council.

I've the amex annual policy and just got a renewal letter and updated policy. I note that the off piste wording has changed. "off piste with a guide" that's is completely different to what it was, used to be as long as you're experienced and heed local warnings and advise. I'm not too worried as will be getting an austrian insurance from now any way and not renewing the amex one.

Yeh, I cancelled mine this year when I got that letter. When I called them up, they (worryingly) said quite adamantly that they never covered off piste without a guide. I disputed this as it was my reason for choosing them, but the wouldn't waiver. Gave a hard sell too when leaving, saying I'd be best to stay with them (because their expensive premium means they payout more frequent) and get separate off-piste insurance elsewhere to meet my needs!
Been looking at Dogtag (seems pricey) and o2insurance.co.uk which both do off piste - the latter being £85 for annual worldwide cover (and then I have a 15% off code).
Any used O2?

pam w, I have had an e mail from the Snowheads insurance people saying, if I can find it,.... here goes:
"We have actually got an extension available for 60 days and this together with a number of changes are being constructed right now.
The official launch of the snowHeads Snowsport Travel Insurance site will not be for a couple of weeks yet." and I received this e mail on 8th Nov. So I am waiting to see if it will work for us. Our SCGB one doesn't need to be renewed till the middle of December. I think that 60 days will be ok as we come and go a bit.

For the record, this is the exact wording of the old and new AMEX policies.... Quite different.
OLD
Special Conditions applying to off-piste
skiing and off-piste snowboarding
Off-piste is defined as any skiing or snowboarding which does
not take place on any normally marked public open pistes.
For your protection and to ensure continuity of cover under
this Policy, you must adhere to the following conditions when
you are intending to ski or snowboard off-piste:
1. You must observe the rules of your resort or Winter Sports
area. If in any doubt you should follow specialist local advice.
2. If you are an inexperienced skier or inexperienced
snowboarder you must not under any circumstances
attempt off-piste skiing or off-piste snowboarding unless
you are under the supervision of a guide.
3. Your guide’s advice and instructions must be strictly
followed at all times.
4. As a general rule you should exercise common sense and
follow sensible local practices.
NEW
Special Conditions applying to off-piste skiing and offpiste
snowboarding
Off-piste is defined as any skiing or snowboarding
outside recognised and authorised areas.
For your protection and to ensure continuity of cover under this
Policy, you must adhere to the following conditions when
you are intending to ski or snowboard off-piste. Failure
to adhere to these conditions will invalidate your claim.
1. You must observe the rules of your resort or Winter
Sports area. If in any doubt you should follow
specialist local advice.
2. You must not under any circumstances attempt off-piste
skiing or off-piste snowboarding unless you are under
the supervision of a guide.
3. Your guide’s advice and instructions must be strictly
followed at all times.
4. As a general rule you should exercise common sense
and follow sensible local practices.

Pamski, thanks for that - 60 days would be OK, provided that there was no limit, within that, as to the overall number of winter sports days allowed (as there now is under the AMEX policy).
I had already cut out all the extraneous frills from the Amex policy - cancellation, personal goods, delayed departure, all that guff. But was still going to be £197 to renew - definitely not good value with such limited coverage of winter sports days.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

pam w, The terms I quoted are not from a travel policy, but from the policy that is included with a UK issued American Express Platinum, it also covers things like the rental car and some personal liability, etc.
