Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Ghost Dog, the legislation is quite old now and is similar to that in Switzerland. No "new lifts/pistes can be constructed BUT old lifts can be upgraded and if as a result of the increased traffic there are potential accident black spots, pistes and lift areas can be extended/changed to avoid these. Before anything can happen there are numerous environmental impaczt assessments. This is what is holding up the building of the lifts in Peisendorf near Zell am See. I could see the track they are going to use when I drove past last week, but no construction work as there are still environmental issues to resolve. If this lift gets built it will effectively open a new area, linked into the Schmittenhöhe. And therin lies the rub, it does not comply with the current legislation but is desperately needed.

There is a forum where people talk about this I'm not sure about it address but I'm sure someone will pipe up with it soon. Unfortunately it is only in German but people report new developments and upgrades.

Personally, I hope someone does post it then I can check on a development that has been approved but not yet started. All they have to do is hang the wire as the buildings have been more or less completed for a couple of years now.

New lifts with new piste have been built around schladming (Preunegg @ Reiteralm, Sunjet at Hochwurzen) in last couple of years.

clarky999, I can put you in touch with someone who knows all about it as he is a chartered surveyor specialising in the placement of lifts. He also runs a ski school in winter as not many lifts are constructed then! wink

The legislation itself will be on the net somewhere under austrian Law but unless you know chapter and verse the relevent parts you could be wading through beamter-deutsch until the cows come home.

Thanks waynos, I knew someone would come up with the link Toofy Grin

Samerberg Sue, cheers that would be great - I'm thinking about basing my dissertation on something a bit like that, and will be in Austria all summer doing the research, so I'll definitely be in touch about that!

I didnt know there were any restrictions on the building of totally new lifts in Austria. In Serfaus there was definitely a totally new lift built for the season 09/10 where there wasn't any uplift the previous year, a new link between Serfaus and Fiss, the Königsleithebahn. And have just realised if you click on a lift on this piste map http://www.serfaus-fiss-ladis.at/en/winter/winter-panorama/ you can even get photos of the lifts Madeye-Smiley How geeky is that? There are similar environmental complications about new lifts in France. The long-talked-about link between Megeve and Praz sur Arly would go across one of the few "virgin" valleys in the area. I, for one, hope it's never built. There are plenty of lifts on both sides already and there are good arguments for not covering all the hills with ironmongery.

The rules of operarating ski lifts (including enlarging ski areas and building new lifts) are being updated in Tyrol.
Here is a German article on the process.

I posted the legislation some years ago on this website. I haven't got time to look for it now.

New Lifts (routes) are still being built, the lift company's got there future development plans in with the authority's before the deadline which was a couple of years ago now.

It can take 10yrs+ to go through all the Umweltverträglichkeitsprüfung (UVP)

Enviromental Impact Study

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/UVP_in_%C3%96sterreich

Final projekts in St Anton, Lech, Kappl Ischgl See, Serfaus have yet to be realised.

Any lift company that did not submit future development plans I am afraid its history.

Samerberg Sue, above summed most of it up.

Of course old lifts can be replaced & modernised.

There are already to many lifts in Austria. Ski Lift Company's are going bankrupt so why do we need more?

nozawaonsen, ta for that link!... I've been trying to find something listing the new lift build at Altenmarkt. Doppelmayer don't have it listed so I wasn't sure but that one has which is sweet!... although still no manafucturing company listed - although building has 'started' well they have rented a digger!

flangesax, There are some listed that are not yet confirmed - they are still trying to decide what would be the best option in Wagrain for example and the Fleckalmbahn is being replaced in Kitzbühel this summer but there is no mention of that project.

It was reported today on Austrian television that the chairlift regulations are about to be revised (as kerekip mentioned above). The most interesting change seemed to be a relaxation of the rules which would allow lifts to be built over currently undeveloped areas to link into existing areas. The example given was in the Stubai valley but I suppose it might apply to the lifts from Peisendorf onto the Schmittenhöhe too.

I haven't heard of the Fleckalmbahn being replaced this year, Samerberg Sue, just the Silberstube chairlift (and "bum warmers" in the Hahnenkamm cable car Laughing) - see in http://www.kitzbuehel.com/de/aktivitaeten/winter/ski-snowboard/bergbahnen.htm#neuigkeiten.

espri, What I have read is that the rules are being amended in Tirol not so sure about other provinces though. The Umweltschutzer in Salzburgerland are very loud and influential (according to a friend of mine who does the surveying for the lift companies)

As for the Fleckalmbahn - maybe I got that wrong or it was wishful thinking but I'm sure I heard it was being replaced with more modern gondolas that seated more and could accommodate snowboards and fat skis Laughing

The Fleckalmbahn is to be replaced, probably soon but not this year. Some other places are getting new lifts, e.g. Fieberbrunn Very Happy (see pictures at http://www.alpinforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=2543&start=200).

espri, That's probably it - I know it is to be upgraded and somehow thought it was this summer. According those lists it is not in the near future.

Maybe they are all bankrupt and going belly up as Stanton says rolling eyes Funnily enough most of the Bergbahn GmbH I know of in my part of Austria and Germany are doing quite nicely thank you. But he seems to have "insider information" and of course is such a reliable and constant source of impartial information we should really not doubt his statements Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Samerberg Sue, espri, the Silberstube lift in Kitzbuhel definitely needs to be replaced with something bigger. It's a bit of a bottleneck. The Jufenalm lift could do with the same treatment. And some of the lifts over the 3SBahn towards Pass Thurn and Resterhöhe are complete relics (although I kinda like the nostalgia aspect).

My friend's instructor told her that they were building lots of new snow cannons this summer too, and were due to cover the Asten piste which I have never known to be open.

Re ban on new hotels, how is it that everytime I go to Austria there are new hotels? There are another 2 under construction in Mayrhofen at the moment (and the new supermarket).

Speaking of bans, did someone say that snowmaking was banned after a certain month in Austria? Just wondered as I saw cannons on on 12 April.

Ghost Dog, where did you get the idea that new hotels are banned? Of course they are not, and upgrades/extensions and new builds are going up all the time to meet the demand. The imminent demise of the Austrian and Swiss tourism economies is some what premature and perhaps exaggerated by some looking for sensationalism. rolling eyes

Most communities have fairly stringent local by-laws about the style and visual impact of new builds. The discussions of the plans submitted are always available in the public domain. Here in my village we can sit in on the planning meetings if we want to. I think the majority of villages and towns in Austria and Bavaria have an overall image that they nurture as it is part of the package for tourists. It also prevents some of the uglier mistakes that spoilt so many French and Italian villages in the 70s and 80s. My village used to be predominantly reliant on farming so we have lots of big multi-generation farmhouses. The last farm that depended entirely on farming converted to 50:50 dairy farming and tourism last year. The image that our community wants to sell to tourists is the rural idyll rather than the humming hi-tech ultra modern buzz. We have no building over 4 stories permitted and all new builds have to conform to the alpine chalet style even if it is a multi-room hotel development.

Very Happy

stanton, in Salzburg city area, Saalbach and the Gastein Valleys! But it his opinion NOT policy!

Good Grief man, the trade associations are always complaining that their particular trade is hard done by and going under in order to get politicians and the like to ease things like taxes or to improve their subsidies!

Like I said a wee bit of sensationalism to try and prevent more competition! rolling eyes

Hardly evidence of the imminent collapse of the entire Alpine tourist infrastructure! wink

The Wagrain project is listed on the Doppelmayer site.
And I guess as the Fleckalmybalmywalmy isn't being replaced this year that the sites are pretty accurate.

flangesax, no, it is listed for 2014/15 Flangesax I found it further down the list. Interesting list though and as you say very accurate.

The link between Graffenberg middle station and the Griesskareck in Wagrain is going to be useful! They were thinking of using a 3S style connection, but I'm not sure what they have gone for in the end though.

As an update to comments earlier in this thread I can report now that work has started on the replacement of the Reckmoos Nord lift in Fieberbrunn. There is an artist's impression of the new middle station at http://www.bergbahnen-fieberbrunn.at/sites/default/files/imagecache/pics_sb_800x500/newspic_big/Reckmoos%20EUB.jpg and also a webcam showing work on the top station at http://www.bergbahnen-fieberbrunn.at/skigebiet/panorama-cams/reckmoos (though I can't access that at the moment).

In Kitzbühel the Silberstube chairlift is not being replaced this season, because the lift company could not agree with all the ground owners. As "Plan B" they are replacing both the old Resterhöhe 2-seater chairlift at Pass Thurn and the Moseralm T-bar at the top of that hill by a new 6-seater chairlift.
