Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Is the Gulf Stream cooling?

OK. Have just been told by a co-worker, who's a metheorology buff, that the temps of the Gulf Stream have been lower this year, and also it's route has changed a bit, leadind to a very harsh next winter for Europe. Anyone heard anything similar about next winter? Is it gouing to be a great skiing year, or mainly chaos on tje roads and airports?

sugardaddy, there have been several stories circulating (wink) on this. Including one which tried to link it to the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Although I'm not sure what exactly your friend is referring to, by and large there doesn't seem to be anything in the stories which either conclusively identifies a drop in temperature or specifically pins down the behaviour of the Gulf Stream as being outside of the range of anomalies which one might usually expect.

So I'm not sure how much weight I would place on any of this at this stage.

Separately there is a strong even very strong La Nina this year (although the impact this has on European weather is hard to really call). And it looks like the North Atlantic Oscillation may be quite negative this year (which does seem to link to increased probability of a colder European weather). Linked to this the presence of Northern blocking is also looking to be on the cards which disrupts the flow of weather from the Atlantic, can drive the Jet Stream south and can open Europe and the UK to cold blasts from the north and east. The current solar cycle is also still not especially active which may also have some sort of link to the way the Jet Stream runs and possibly increases the chances of a colder European winter.

A number of long range forecasts for winter are talking about a colder, but drier start to winter (obviously the longer range the forecast the less reliable they are likely to be).

And there may be a kick in the tail of October...

Have a glance at The all new 10/11 Weather Outlook thread if you are interested.

Yes, I was also quite surprised to hear yesterday on TV that this winter is going to be "the coldest in 1000 years" for Europe, mainly due to the weakening of the Gulf stream effect.

Helicopters (in German!) Shocked

It is by the way about to get suddenly very cold in Russia... (and probably a tad chillier than the current rather jolly sunshine in the UK by the end of the month).

Or maybe not - colder seas = less evaporation = less moisture in the air = less snowfall. Granted you may have snow sticking around for longer, but it won't be the snow you want.

No idea, just colder in general, which means more snow (or not if clarky999 is right).

Just googled "winter coldest for 1000" years and top of the list of sites was davidicke.com which leads me to be somewhat sceptical already !

But be careful what you wish for.............
It may sound great to have lying snow here and being able to ski in your garden or the local park etc. but it would be chaos on the roads and at the airports. The UK simply isn't geared up to dealing with snow - well England anyway. Isn't that why we go to the Alps?

billb, Agree, we had lying snow for weeks here last winter and by the time it melted I was glad to see the back of it. Then it kept coming back!

Great if you have access to groomed pistes or fresh powder that's fallen on an appreciable slope. Those apart the main effect of constant snow when you are trying to get on with life in this country is a right pain in the a**e!

Apart from a few days at Xmas I'll be happy if it stays in the hills snowHead

As was said on another thread recently for all the snow we had throughout Northern Europe last year, it was far from a classic in the Alps, adequate, but no snowfest rolling eyes

billb, correct - we're not used to it as is a rare event. Should it become the norm, I suspect we would adapt

I was in Toronto in November 08 when the first snow of the winter arrived. About 3 inches, and complete chaos ensued - half the cars didn't have their winter tyres on, roads weren't gritted, took hour and a half for a 5 mile drive to the airport, etc.. Made me feel quite at home.
