Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Question - Why have all the riders got backpacks on, on their descents? Best i can come up with is either they needed them to carry their skis up the Bec or it's a comfort thing? I know i feel naked skiing without a backpack.

They have to hike it so yes, for attaching skis. Some years, not sure about this year, they have to be roped in to get up, so a place to stash their harness. A convenient place for last will & testament, bongs, water, shovels & probes I think are the other main reasons. Wink

Only piste skiers ski without a back pack anyway, it's fashionable so I guess they stick to the main trends of fat skis etc etc

Its actually in the (official) rules that competitors need to carry their own shovel / probe / beacon.
Guess it sets a good example, if nothing else. Plus, as others mentioned, they must hike up the Bec too.

Great to see Candide win the tour.
Now (officially) one of the worlds most versatile skiers ?
And a great way to return from his nasty broken back.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Was quite funny seeing them fully sacked up skiing totally inbounds terrain at Squaw right under a cable car station (many started their run by backflipping off a low roof).

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

bobinch, The majority of the competitors clips that i watched were not wearing ABS backpacks. I'm more likely to agree with parlor's, bong assessment based on all of the pro freeriders i've known in the past.

But yeah Haggis_Trap's, statement that they're obligated to have a fully avi rescue kit is about what i expected just never knew for sure.

frank4short, hahaha not sure a bong would be a good idea before skiing the bec!!!

I noticed the guy being winched off on the heli (see picture above) had an ABS but didn't check the others. Haggis_Trap seems to have come up with the definitive answer.

Did they really hike up? I thought at least the pros were dropped off by heli?

They have to hike in to ski it. That's what the bongs for, the way up. Wink

Regarding ABS, only a couple of the competitors wear them AFAIK. One of the sponsors of the even is Snowpulse.

Competitors are also obliged to wear a helmet and back protector. Kinda makes sense. Wink
