Poster: A snowHead

Watching Ski Sunday, I'd wondered why, when you see a downhill skier take off his skis at the end of a run, they look longer than when he's on the podium. Now I discover the minimum length is 7 foot and I guess the manufacturers don't want the likes of us demanding 7 foot skis in the hire shops.

Downhill skis are long. They have to be to achieve those sorts of speeds. However, because of the marketing potential of the podium shots I believe the racers hold shorter skis, not their actual race skis. I vaguely remember Graham Bell telling us this on an episode of SS at some point in the past.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

P10DW, queen bodecia, is, I think, correct. Podium shots have them holding slalom skis I think.
DH skis are long (210-220 or so) and much, much straighter than anything you'll ski on yourself. Radius >45m for example. My belief these days is that the length is required only for stability at speed.

Yes, the rules for World Cup Downhill require a minimum length of 215cm and a minimum turn radius of 45m (for men). For women it is 210/45.
