Poster: A snowHead

Hi All,
Looking on the F.I.S. site and came across Masters racing.Has anybody done any of this ? Is it for over 40s amateur (wannabe) racers like myself-(no laughing Fattes13-beaten by your Dad last Sunday !! by several seconds). Can anyone give me an idea of the standard involved and the athmosphere it attracts-is it really serious stuff or is there a bit of a social side to it also.
Thanks,

briand6868, Masters racing is for over 30s. I have done a few races a year for several years now.
There is a good social side to it, but the races are run to the same standard as any other FIS race, you take it as seriously as you want. You can get the rules here. If you want to enter you will need to get a FIS Masters licence from the Snowsports Association of Ireland, this is different from a standard FIS licence.

Hello Lads,
Have looked up S.A.I. and the site seems to be obsolete. Fattes 13 told me yesterday he saw some of the Masters types training in Saas Fee in the Summer and they are bloody good- rather rotund ( not unlike fattes) but almost as fast as they were in their hay-day. I still think I'd like to give it a go maybe next season just to say I've done it and the F.I.S. race licence would be nice to stick in a frame to show Fattes 13 when we both retire from our hectic ski-racing lives.Fattes-did a costing on Saas for Paddys for myself and mrs briand6868 and its crazy min 1600e for 3 days skiing thats with a swiss flight and overnight in Zurich to make the return flight-see you Wed- any news from the assessment boys?

Hi Ris,
Just as it says Snowsports Association of Ireland seems to have a site which hasn't been updated in a couple of years and several of the pages lead to no information, blank screens. The rest is fairly easy to understand I think.

Dunk, I was assuming that he was Irish, not British. GBR licences can only be issued to UK passport holders.

briand6868, I'm really trying to get an idea what bird you think you are killing. You can try contacting James Rothnie but he will tell you exactly the same as me, you need to get a FIS Masters licence from SAI if you have an Irish passport and they then need to send your race entries to race organizers. Once you have got the licence I'm sure some of us can look after you at races.
Looking on the FIS website there only seems to be one result for an Irish Master, I'm wondering whether your Federation has a system for granting Master licences, they are not the same as a Full International FIS Alpine one and are not supposed to be difficult to get. For Snowsports GB we just ask a new racer to get a reference from a coach to say that they have some idea what they are doing.
It is a shame you didn't start this thread a couple of days earlier, I could have had a chat with the Irish guys who came over for the indoor race in Manchester.

Hi RJS,
Starting to get an idea where you're coming from. I'll speak to the race comittee at the Ski Club of Ireland and see what they say- theyre probably the same people who know about the Snowsports ass of Ireland. The Saas bit is a bit of chat between myself and Fattes saves me the price of a call as I know he checks in here daily. The one Irish Master certainly is not familiar to me or anyone else I know, he competed in Liberec and is 61yrs old but I'm curious as to who he is.
