Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

The ski school instructors in our resort wear Spyder gear. They can ski pretty well and they reckon it's pretty decent gear. Not that I'm a big Spyder fan myself, most of their stuff looks a bit middle aged for my liking. Also a bit wary of their proprietary materials, although I've never tried them.

I'm not convinced about Spyder gear myself, I think there are plenty of better 'premium' brands to choose from. As for it being a 'mugs' game, I doubt any of the wealthy people who tend to pay for top quality 'branded' gear will be too bothered. You're only a mug if you buy stuff you can't really afford.

I agree, you won't find too much knocked-off Arcteryx, Kjus or Mammut on Ebay. wink There are a few 'Fat-wads' that rock-up at S&R and splash out a few £k's on his and her Spyder, but they tend to be pretty clueless re. brands and skiing come to that. Confused

That's great gear and not ridiculously expensive. I've got a Marmot Glenmore pro-shell and it's seriously tough. Designed for mountain rock climbing, so reinforced all over the place. I've scraped it heavily on quite a few sharp branches while skiing in the trees and not a mark on it. Very understated and reeks of quality.

sorry about this but you do see a lot of skiers on the slopes wearing spyder But you and i know falf of them are fakes
if you are satisfied that the quality is good and if they last a season you would have done well
and it is true same factories do produce for a veriety of brands eg endura sunglasses are produced in the
same factory as oakleys and they are 1/3 of the price

It's definately fake at that price... can't see how it can't be.

I bought a Spyder jacket but made sure I went to an authorised dealer and confirmed with Spyder Europe they were the real deal. Spyder is the most knocked off kit by far. It's hard to tell sometimes as the copies are really good.

Look for the detail, is there a lens wipe cloth in the jacket? Are the pockets within pockets there? Are there washing isnstructions on it (missing from a lot of fakes at the moment). The hologram is no use as everyone seems to be able to fake that. Other signs are fakes using colur schemes never used by Spyder (check the website), feel the shell, the fakes fell silkier for some reason, what about ipod wire holders are they there? The fakes are pretty dammed good.... but they show their quality after a season, and the seams start going and colours running.

Spyder gear is fantastic, but they are really be killed by eBay fakes. I own an eBay fake shirt........ not the same. My jacket has been washed countless times and still looks like new, still retains it's breathable waterproof quality and still looks bright.

So I bought a jacket and trousers and fake or not they're fantastic value for money. I checked all the above things and ipod wire holder, lense cleaner, washing instructions, hologram etc all there. The colour scheme is correct. The level of detail and quality is outstanding, down to each zip being engraved, all stitched Spyder logo's, inside pockets and poppers all detailed and no prints anywhere. The straps are detailed along with the meshing and the pockets.

Also, one strange thing is the amount of paperwork that comes with them - completely unlike every other fake I've come across and no spelling or grammar mistakes etc which, in another country, happens on every fake due to the language differences. I bought a fake North Face bag here which was decsribed as horse clothing on the supposed genuine north face tags! Laughing

I have taken pics for everyone to see....see link below. Whether it's me wanting to believe it or not, I think they're a back of the lorry job.

my friend had a load of spyder gear that he got cheaply from thailand and after 1 week of wearing the gloves they had fallen apart completley and he didn't do anything stupid to them or even crash so it was almost certainly faked and the ones you're looking at will be probably be to.

My friend once bought a pair of Adidias shoes in the United Kingdom that fell apart. I guess we better never buy Adidas goods within the United Kingdom again.

I think I'm going to make an online diary of my counterfeit/stolen goods. We can see how long they last Laughing.

I think it looks great, and you made as informed a choice as you could. For that price it is a bargain and certainly looks real, usually counterfitters do not go to so much trouble/detail on paperwork.
Is it a real shop, or just a market stall? If real shop that hopes for repeat business/referrals should also be more secure. Enjoy skiing with your new threads!

NomadicBoo, Does it matter to you if they are fakes or not? I got a fake one on ebay. I sent it back, no problems. I went to a reputable shop in the US and got a real one, a tad more expensive but was prepared to pay more for the real thing. You paid nothing for them and you will get great use out of them anyway so what is the problem if they are fakes.

Enjoy the use and the season.

I'm a pretty rubbish skier with a genuine spyder (vail?) jacket. I love it when its cold, hate it when its warm and it uses up a big chunk of my airline weight allowance. The jacket was 600 in s&r, but I paid 250 when it was on sale at an online spyder retailer and I'm presuming they didn't make a loss, so I'd have thought it could have been sold a lot cheaper 2 or 3 distributors earlier.

I ski in Andermatt quite a bit and I have never seen anyone in Spyder gear. This resort is a freeriders paradise and Mammut , Patagonia, Arcteryx, Marmot is very much the norm. We were in the Dolomites in January and were stood in a lift line behind a Russian family who were clad head to foot in Spyder gear all with matching black spiders - most Russians in my experience have very dubious taste - so for me I would never buy it. Also it is so damned heavy compared to my Mountain Equipment pro shell -I can also wear this jacket in my local without looking like a total prick. I did go through a phase in the eighties when I wore Nevica with lots of reflective stripes thankfully I have gone through that. Spyder gear is over priced and not a patch on other premium brands.

I have a pair of Spyder trousers (aka 'pants'). Didn't buy them because of the label, but becuase they fit very well (the only model I could find in London shops which WASN'T baggy) and have all the pockets and zippers that I need. They are excellent.
This winter I was looking at jackets and all Spyders I saw were way too thick and heavy and I didnt have any joy with other brands either. So I am sticking with my Decathlon jacket for now.

If counterfeit problem is as bad as some of you suggested here Spyder should probably take steps for tougher TM protection.

NomadicBoo,

One thing the fakers always but always get right are the labels. That's no surprise.

If the rest of the detailing is there... the pockets within pockets, the ipod cable clips, the wipe for the goggles, the anchor poin in every pocket...... and you're happy that it's a decent jacket it may well not be a fake. But if you pay your money you take your chances.

If you like it, and want to wear it, and it does the job and is a bargain does it matter to you?

If you're selling it on then that may be a different matter, there are whole legal scarey issues there....

Have to smile at the "too cool for school" mentality. Wear Arcteryx and you are a serious BC skier. Wear Spyder and you are a... insert choices here, eg... overpaid, overweight, middle-aged piste bomber. Really? I guess I better be more careful when I next buy gear to ensure I project the right image. Now, where's that Spyder shop... NehNeh

Hey

Just because a couple of people here don't like it it's been now branded as "middle aged" on this thread. You make them sound as if they were dowdy dark mono colour coats, that are the skiing equivalent of a flashers trenchcoat. They most certainly are not! They are fantastic jackets, that are technically superb. They breathe well and keep you warm on the coldest of days. They come in a range of colours that I think although are not OTT are at least distinctive and are far from dull. They have a range of features that marks them out as quality items. Soft collars that don't rub, quality zippers that don't stick, more pockets than you'll ever need, detachable arms, and they're so hard wearing. Then there are all the little nice things they have, the lens wipe, the anchors in every pocket, the specialised radio pocket, the cable holders for an ipod (although I have issues with people who wear ipods when skiing). When washed they lose none of their properties, and look like new.

I love my Spyder jacket. I think it looks great, and it more than does everything I want it to do. If you judge me for wearing it well, that's your problem. I like it and if you look at the number around so do an awful lot of other people. In fact they're that popular they're even copied!!!!! (OK this is a bad thing)

I'd love to see how this thread went down on a German site BTW. Spyder and Bogner are the brands they love.

NomadicBoo, What you've bought is a very good fake, not your normal Chinese copy, but not genuine Spyder. it does look really well made though and for what you've paid for it, as a jacket & pants, it's a bargain. holidayloverxx, The design and colourway isn't a Spyder design. That style of design, though not the same was more like their 'Quest' series a few years ago, but the tags are 'Legend' series copies. The internal tags are colour coded to each model year too. The zips on the pants at boot level are wrong. Zip pull ribbons are copies from 'Big Mountain' range, not 'Legend'. The Goggle Wipe is made of micro-fibre and isn't overlocked around the edges.
