Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Who owns Spyder gear?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I'm currently in Bangkok and they're selling Spyder ski trousers and jackets at about 40 pounds each. I deid a bit of research and it seems they're manufactured here so I guess they're off the back of tuk-tuk.

My friend raves about Spyder gear so who owns it and is it really that good? I have some basic cheap gear from Matalan so it could be worth the upgrade? Also, how much do they normally retail at back home?

NomadicBoo, Embarassed I have some, gift off the other half...cost him about £800 for jacket and trousers I think Embarassed Mines very stylish and very warm but the jacket doesn't have a snowskirt which is really really stupid. I suppose you just need to be careful that they're fakes and crap. Check the detail, seams etc. it should all reek of quality.

I'm guessing they're probably fakes and not Spyder quality!

Proper Spyder gear is good but there are a hell of a lot of fakes around. I'd stay well clear if you want to have a good quality jacket. If you just want a new jacket for £40 and not bothered about its breathability etc then go for it.

Bangkok is full of fake gear as you've probably found out! Used to be watches in my day. Probably now Spyder gear

That's what makes me think they're potentially real. Bangkok is full of fake stuff with pretty much every shop selling the same 10 things. But the Spyder stuff can only be found in one little stall (I've checked everywhere in every shopping district in the city because the choice is limited) which would mean they don't make many which isn't the way with fakes. My thoughts are that if they were fakes everyone would be selling them so likely off the back of a lorry! Maybe my logic is backward Laughing .

I checked out the quality and they look spot on, very thick, well tailored so even if they are I think I will go for them.

The very latest Spyder stuff is OK, but in my view it's old school technology with loud, gawdy designs. Ebay has done the brand no end of harm, the Ebay sourced stuff are 5yo+ designs and look it. The thick, insulation stuffed jacket is old hat, shell technology with layering is where it's at now. My mate uses a Spyder Challenger jacket, on mild days he sweats his bits off. Confused

They could be real if the factory operates the usual far eastern practice of producing an unofficial "overrun" of an order. These "genuine copies" are then sold on the local market at a knock down (but still highly profitable for them) price. Or they could just be "fake copies" as noted.

Exactly. It's the fact that they are manufactured here but not sold here that makes me think they're real. I think it's a back of a lorry scenario but I am going to go back to the stall and check them out once again.

I actually have a pair of Spyder pants in Dermizax. They are fairly simple looking (no gaudy stuff) and have served me well. I would buy again.

NomadicBoo, No, what makes you think they're real is the sniff of a bargain. It's a natural human trait that all fakers prey on. They could be real, but far more likely to be fakes. But at least they're only £40 so probably not a bad deal either way.

Nope. The one I am considering buying is plain black with just a touch of blue on the jacket. The reason I want them is because my current threads are loud and red and shout "I'm coming" as I hurtle down the mountain.

NomadicBoo, are you able to take any pictures of them do you think? Especially the detail and the lining. If you post them up here there may be a better view of their genuineness. Although I suspect the sellers would object! I'm sure you could come up with a story of buying one for your friend back home and wanting to send him a picture of it Toofy Grin

It's definately fake at that price... can't see how it can't be.

I bought a Spyder jacket but made sure I went to an authorised dealer and confirmed with Spyder Europe they were the real deal. Spyder is the most knocked off kit by far. It's hard to tell sometimes as the copies are really good.

Look for the detail, is there a lens wipe cloth in the jacket? Are the pockets within pockets there? Are there washing isnstructions on it (missing from a lot of fakes at the moment). The hologram is no use as everyone seems to be able to fake that. Other signs are fakes using colur schemes never used by Spyder (check the website), feel the shell, the fakes fell silkier for some reason, what about ipod wire holders are they there? The fakes are pretty dammed good.... but they show their quality after a season, and the seams start going and colours running.

Spyder gear is fantastic, but they are really be killed by eBay fakes. I own an eBay fake shirt........ not the same. My jacket has been washed countless times and still looks like new, still retains it's breathable waterproof quality and still looks bright.

Good idea - I may try and do that and I'll post if I can. Either way I will probably buy them so I will post pictures after purchase to give people the chance to slate my new purchase and tell me I've been ripped off!

This is a great way of getting myself arrested too. Stating my intent to buy stolen and/or counterfeit goods, buying them and then posting the evidence online. I'll probably be pinched on my return to Heathrow! Toofy Grin

Spyder stuff is overpriced for what it is since it appeals to the fashion ski crowd. This is also why it is so often faked.

I wouldn't have thought they would be fakes. Most branded ski wear is made in the Far East (usually Pakistan and Bangladesh), although they may be offered to you via an 'unofficial source'...

Personally I don't have Spyder gear as it is ridiculously priced in Europe and IMO the quality does not match the price ticket...

there is a rule that any one manufacturing in Thailand also has to have a retail outlet or sell their goods locally There is a huge Decathalon under some tower blocks 20 km out of town on the Bang-na Express which sells stuff soooooo cheap.

Also at the Plonchit sky train station, just up from and beyond Sukhumvit Soi 2 (same side of road) there is a small shopping mall and on the second floor to the rear right hand side is a shop that sells 'out door' gear such as tents/boots etc plus ski jackets (Columbia etc), I always pick one up when i am there for £50 or so.

Btw I used to work there !! Very Happy

I'm inclined to agree with rayscoops. I remember an independent report into motorcycling gear a couple of years back. Again most branded motorcycling gear (Dainese, Alpinestars, Spidi, Frank Thomas, RST, etc.) is made in Pakistan. Quite a few brands are made in the same factory to the same specifications and then branded ready for export. When these brands reach our shores there is a big difference in prices between them. For example, a Dainese two-piece leather suit costs in the region of £600-£800 whereas the RST equivalent costs £300-£400. The consumer is simply paying extra for a percieved 'premium' brand. Incidentally the approximate production costs for such a suit were in the region of £25...

I strongly suspect skiwear to be the same. Spyder gear might well be made in the same factory as Dare2Be and then branded for export. The production costs are probably somewhere around £10 per item. Paying over the odds for a 'premium' brand is a mugs game in my book...

In any case, there will usually be local sales outlets where you can buy the same gear at a fraction of the cost. Sometimes it is unbranded which is even cheaper. It seems quite a bit of this stuff finds its way onto ebay too...

Not saying there aren't any fakes, I'm sure there are plenty. However I think the fakes market is a bit closer to home, rather than in the same location as the production factories. Most fake motorcycling gear hails from Eastern Europe...

I'm not convinced about Spyder gear myself, I think there are plenty of better 'premium' brands to choose from. As for it being a 'mugs' game, I doubt any of the wealthy people who tend to pay for top quality 'branded' gear will be too bothered. You're only a mug if you buy stuff you can't really afford.
