Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Glasses Options

A few us our off in a couple of weeks skiing and a friend of ours in whinging endlessly about his optical issues.

He wears photochromic and polarised glasses but not strong enough for snow. In the past he has worn
prescription sunglasses, which in bright conditions were ok, but in dull conditons couldn't make out the terrain and found it very difcult to ski.

We have advised googles but he doesn't like the feel, I am worried that the soundtrack to our holidays is going to him complaing.

Can anyone advise on the options available and whether there are any specialist shops/opticians that we can refer him to in Ireland or Britain.

Thanks!

My girlfriend has a pair of Rudy Project sunglasses which have a clip-in for prescription lenses. The sunglasses themselves have interchangeable lenses so she can change the colour without affecting the prescription, and as a bonus the prescription clip-in also fits in Rudy Project goggles.

I've got a pair of prescription oakleys I use for the sunny days, and I used to use goggles over glasses on the dull or dodgy days. I've just got a pair of addidas elevations with a prescription lens insert. They have replaceable lenses, come with a dark set and a yellow poor light set. I;ve set them up with the yellow lenses and use them when conditions are poor. Seem pretty good so far, but I've only needed them for a couple of half days so far.

killian, I have prescription sunnies from Boots with their darkest tint and find that this is dark enough for skiing in if that's any use.

I've had an eye infection for last two months and therefore can't wear contacts at the moment. I know how your friend feels - the thought of having to wear goggles over glasses for me is a bit miserable. Would much prefer my contacts and goggles

killian, Although the idea has been scoffed at by some here, on a recent helmet thread I looked at the issue of helmets with visors http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=47990
I think as a spectacle wearer esp.if contacts are out and you can't afford the fancy goggles, but might already own prescription sunnies and esp. if you also want to buy a helmet that they might be an option. A clear visor could work well with prescription sunnies, or a tinted one with ordinary spectacles. In the prescription lenses melting pot I think they are also an option to consider.

njm, I know what you mean - I had iritis just before one skiing trip and couldn't wear contacts. Given that it was a couple of days before the trip I also couldn't get some prescription sunglasses. So, heinous crime above heinous crime, I bought some clip-ons to go on my glasses! Rather surprisingly they actually worked, my eyes didn't stream with tears at speed and such is the trend towards smaller glasses (and hence clip-ons) they actually didn't look ridiculous. Indeed friends didn't know they were clip-ons until I pointed it out in photographs afterwards.

Having said all that, I have prescription sunglasses and also a pair of over-the-glasses goggles for next week as backup in case I can't wear contacts and wraparound shades!

If you can use them, contacts plus shades or goggles, which ever you fancy, life changer for me. I can quite happily ski V fast with just contacts, no tears, freezing, whatever, maybe I'm just lucky as that seems in opposition to quite a number of controversial threads on this subject.

I agree that contacts are probably best, but I can't wear them so I use Adidas Evil Eye Explorer glasses which have a clip in optical insert for your prescription. They also have a wide range of interchangeable lenses ranging from clear (9% absorbtion, Cat 0) to the space lens as used by NASA astronauts (95% absorbtion, Cat 4) so there is something to fill all his needs.

I expect they still do them Boots actually used to do special spectacles designed with the dark plate that stuck to the front of the frame with little magnets embedded in the frame. Without the dark lens they more or less look like ordinary specs. and then the dark plate just touches onto the magnets and stays put when you want the specs as sunnies. The specs are sold with the dark lens inc. in the price.

I have used Adidas Elevation climacool sunnies which can take an prescription optical insert and also have a foam liner attachment which kind of turns them into goggles rather than sunglasses when it starts snowing. These have worked fine for me for the last few years but last year at flaine most of the week was foggy and snowing and I found I did have problems with misting even using some anti-fog didn't cure the problem.

So, this year I will be trying daily contact lenses for ski-ing. I'm planning to take the adidas elevations (using without the optical insert) and will pickup some goggles if the elevations still fog when wearing on murky days.

Thats the plan anyway, got some sample contact lenses to try over the next week and go back next Thursday for a checkup before ordering 30 days worth !

Contacts every time, plus sunnies or goggles depending on the weather/light. Never ever had a problem with my contacts on the slopes in 20 years.
