Bode Miller was disqualified after the opening run of a World Cup night slalom in Zargreb (Croatia) on Tuesday because the soles of his new ski boots were a mere 0.2mm too high. Miller's boots were tested in a random routine check by FIS officials that usually takes place between runs. FIS rules limit the height of ski boots to 34.3 millimeters because knee injuries often occur when boot soles are higher. My immediate reaction was wow, that is a bit over the top and geeky. Nobody would have ski boots and try to race with them out of spec at any level would they?, never mind top ski racers.
Looks like bode needs to have a visit to CEM at S4F

I would think temperature fluctuations would cause variations nearing .2mm to the sole height - so the sole height should have a margin to allow for that. I unless every .1mm helps, or the boot manufacturers wouldn't go so close to the limit. Talking of manufacturing, production tolerances (even bespoke boots must be made from moulds) would be a problem when getting down to those limits. Mind you, I wonder what the calibration of the sting equipment is. My vernier can allegedly measure down to .01mm - but even if it were calibrated, it would be valid only at a given temperature, I think.

achilles, they do the measuring in a heated tent I think, so FIS at least attempt to control for temperature fluctuations.

i wish the news report would get the measurements correct........ the FIS regs state 43mm not 34.3mm for world cup and europa cup and 45mm for FIS level races
