Poster: A snowHead

What a finish to that slalom. 0.05s in it. What an atmosphere when Kostelic went into the lead with just Grange to go. Excellent look on everyone's faces at the end - looked like they thoroughly enjoyed their evening of skiing and the fantastic atmposphere.
Great to see a few of the (very) late runners make it into the second run, with Myhre, starting in bib 70, finishing 7th! What a day it must have been for him.
What a shame that some pillock on the FIS technical committee (or whatever it is called), decided to disqualify someone for having a boot that was 0.3mm too tall. 0.3mm!!!???

I think that someone was Bode Miller too.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Colin B, thank you. I was just so flabbergasted (oooh, haven't used that word for a while) and staggered at the pomposity that I completely forgot who it was.

Our very own Chemmy has, in the past, been disqualified for a similar miniscule measurement.
Great race, though . I, too, love seeing the high bib numbers come through and get points.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

If the rule is well defined, then it should be easy for the competitors (with all their technicians) to check.
Maybe 0.3mm should be allowed. What about 0.3mm + 0.3mm etc

You'll need to Register first of course.

I don't believe that the measuring devices can be calibrated to measure such small margins with consistency. Most similar rules I have come across have generally had tolerances to cover this (usually something like 1mm). The rules are there for a reason, primarily safety as I understand it, and 'buffer zones' (for want of a better description) will have been built into the regulations anyway, which means it should be perfectly plausible to have a tolerance added to the regulations, to cover issues which even high-tech manufacturing cannot entirely eliminate, especially in an environment with extremes of temperatures.

I assume they would have taken those tolerances into account before disqualifying the competitor. Once it's been decided that the boots are outside the regulations the officials have no choice.
In rugby would you ignore a forward pass that was only slightly forward

Arguably there are a huge number of forward passes that are let go in every rugby match. Of course, we could catch them all if we had a piece of equipment that could measure the direction of a pass within 0.3mm...

JasonW, she has broken a bone in her ankle. She is hoping to get back into racing before the end of this season.
