Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Over a short distance big difference in weather. Clouds around the summits in Val Thorens. Heavy clouds in the valleys up to 1000 meter.
Nice sunny weather in St Martin and Méribel. The temperature is around freezingpoint and even some degrees higher in St Martin at 1450 meter. In the morning the lifts which supports the liaison with Val Thorens were closed due to high winds.
The snow on the pistes is good and the damage cause by the wind is mostly visible off-piste. It seems that St Martin and Méribel suffered less of the last sunday's storm.

The whole day misty and light snowfall. In total 15 cm fresh snow. The predicted sunshine at the end of the afternoon did not appear at all.
The visibilty on the pistes was sometimes less then 25 meters. The temperature is little down and it feels like a real winter. Off-piste is very dangerous because there is on most places a snowlayer of 10 cm. The boarderweek in Val Thorens gives a lot of extra activities.

Just got back from Les Menuires. Skiied monday and yesterday and left early this morning while it was a-dumping - made for a tricky transfer back to Geneva. Monday was limited to mid stations and below but great underfoot conditions. Avalanche warnings all over the place but, as usual, saw the odd idiot risking it... meanwhile the boom of avalanche control going off all the time. Yesterday was just brill. Packed, groomed squeaky stuff and we stayed mainly in the sunnier, less windy runs down to Meribel and St Martin. Peeps going out for Christmas / New Year are in for some epic conditions methinks.

Can thoroughly recommend the newly-refurbished Latitude Les Bruyeres. Outdoor pool... bliss.

How do you know said ïdiot wasn't a guide, skiing with a guide, or skiing after making an informed decision about which slopes to ski?

LOL fair point, but there are probably safer slopes to be on, reading some of the guiding blogs, they've been out even in Val D'Isere with 150cm fresh!

Beautifull weather. No clouds, no wind, only sun and a temperature just above zero.
All lifts are operational and nearly all pistes are open. The amount of snow is enough for a lot of pleasure. The pistes are in good shape. Sometimes hard and some small patches with stones. Off-pistes is hardly impossible.

Today it was like a day in March. The temperature was a little bit higher than yesterday. And again there was a lot of sunshine. The coming days it will be colder. The chances on snowfall in the coming days is minimal. As usual the conditons of the pistes are in Val Thorens much better than in the other places. Waitingtime for the mainlifts is not more then 5 minutes. It seems to be less crowded in this Christmasweek.

Just like the two days before it was again very nice weather. During the day the temperature was +2 degrees at 3000 meter. Tomorrow it will be much colder with less sunshine. The snow is nearly everywhere in a good condition due to low temperatures in the night and the accumulated cold in the mountains.
The Santa Claus has been arrived in Les Bruyeres accompagnied by 200 skiteachers. There was free wine and chcolate and little presents for the children. At the end there were spectecular fireworks. Everything will be paid by the touristtax.

It was colder than yesterday. In the morning heavy overcast and windy. Only little bit of sun during the afternoon. Strong winds above 2500 meters. Some lifts, like Bruyères 2 and Pas du Lac 2 ,were closed and the advice was given to return as soon as possible to your "own" valley. The temperature on 3000 m during midday was -6 degrees and that not bad for Christmasday. The day came to an end with a very nice sunset.

Real cold weather is back again. Last night the temperature dropped and a severe storm started. In the morning the storm decrease in power and the rest of the day there were strong winds. A lot of lifts were cloesed. The liaisons with the other valleys were only possible by means of the draglifts. A lot of snow has been blown away and most of the pistes are hard and icy.

Cold and sunny. These are the mainpoints of this day. There was no wind and despite of the low temperatures it was very pleasant on the terrasses. The Christmas visitors have been departed and the new ones have been arrived. This night all parking places were occupied. It will be crowded on the pistes during the next week.
The snowforcast for this year is minimal. The last time that there was snowfall was on december, 17 th. The amount of snow on pistes is not big, but enough to last untill 2009.

Just like yesterday : sunny and cold. It was even colder mainly because of the wind.
Despite the economic downturn people are still willing to pay for an expensive skiholiday. It was very crowded today on the piste and at the lifts. The waitingtime for most of the lifts was more then 10 minutes. In general are the pistes hard and icy. Off-pistes there are large fields without snow. On certain places on the pistes you will find rocks and grass. Nevertheless the skiing here on most of the pistes is still a pleasure. According to the 10-day forecast there will be no snowfall before January 5th.

123_456,

Great information, much better than I could manage (I took neither camera or laptop with me).

I stayed in Val Thorens last week (Sun 21st to Sun 28th) and even at the start there wasn't really enough snow to do off-piste in Val Thorens (did find some in Courchevel 1650 on Tuesday), and after Boxing Day there was none. VT was closed all day on Friday 26th due to very high winds, up to 120kph. Best we could do in the morning was look out at pisteurs putting fences across the pistes to close them while trying to stay upright - they failed (to stay upright, that is). The two short drag lifts in town (Retour & Roc) opened sometime in the afternoon and the Funitel Peclet had some movement from 15:45 to 16:00 but we didn't see anyone on it - I think they just tested the lift without passengers.

Next day, Saturday 27th, Plein Sud was the only lift that opened on time. Plein Sun piste was diabolical and the pisteurs hadn't had time to mark a large bare section in the middle of the piste just above the Bouquetin & 3 Vallees 2 lift station. My poor skis! Further down it was very hard packed and wind scoured with ridges. Thoroughly unpleasant. We did one round trip and by then the Bouquetin was open & we got out of Val Thorens to better snow & sunshine. On return in the late afternoon, the piste had much improved and the snow cannons were running.

VT has been hit by two wind storms (120kph winds) in two weeks. The off piste snow has been mostly blown away, but the pisteurs have done a very good job of keeping the snow on the pistes so don't despair the pistes can be good - Christine (a piste!) got a good report on Sunday.

BTW, Friday was the first time in over 50 weeks of skiing that I've suffered a resort closure.

This day was also sunny and cold. Above 2400 m there was a lot of wind. Some lifts have to be closed. In the afternoon high clouds appeared from the southwest. The condition of the pistes is unchanged. Temperature at the top of the Péclet was -15 degrees. Due to the high number of people how want to ski the waitingtime at the Bruyères cabinelift was this afternoon more than 20 minuten.

The weather has changed in the last 24 hours. There is less sun, more clouds and moreover the temperature was up with 7 degrees.
Yesterday night the temperature started climbing slowly and at the end of the night it was around freezing point at 2000 m. During the day the temperature did not change. The wind was too strong (50-80 km/h) for several lifts and they were closed. The lower pistes were crowded and the waitingtimes for the other lifts was very high.
Upto this moment there is no snowfall at all, despite some nice forecasts. Perhaps tomorrow night I can give better news.

Some of my pictures of today have to be sighted at orginal size and upon a display of at least 17".

At last during last night there was some snowfall. Between 2000 and 3000 meters the layer of fresh snow varies from 2 cm to 5 cm. In the Maurienne Valley in the direction of Orelle the layer was nearly 10 cm.
This thin layer of snow gives the mountains their white cover back, that was destroyed during the last storm. The pistes were in a slightly better conditions then the days herefore. For the next days the snowcanons have to do a lot of work to further increase the amount of snow.
The watersupply in Lac des Echauds 1 in Les Menuires is at the highest level and the temperature is below zero. Perfect conditions for artifical snow.
Today the temperature was a little below zero with less wind and the sun shined the whole day. Alltogether a good start for this new year.

There is hardly something new to report. The weather is unchanged sunny, but a little colder. Tomorrow the low season will start and hopefully the crowds on the pistes and at lifts will disappear for at least the coming 4 weeks. The pistes and snow are unchanged. The patches on the pistes without snow are carefully repaired every night.
