Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Whitegold, More snow, less powder. Lots of wind this year so higher off piste was often crusty. Sad What there was, was tracked out by about midday on the lower slopes. Report later. Kids, certificates and lots of peeps coming round - must hoover, do certs and get folding chairs out of the cave.

It was windy again today, but not actually cold. The snow around the Toura was fine, but just below that it was quite hard early on. the Cretes became a puddingly sort of consistency after about 13.00. Having said that, the visibility was fine all day, and I'm sure the snow was OK higher up if you could brave the wind. Shocked I brought poor Ian McD down the Grande Pente which was truly ghastly. Poor bloke did very well as the snow had become soft all the way through which meant we were frequently sinking in a foot or two in the middle or end of a turn. Shocked It's a shame it's gone so far, but I won't be skiing it again in a hurry. rolling eyes

I forgot to take any pix up on the mountain, but took this of the Diable looking a bit sad when I got home. It's still fine and skiable, but is clearly melting back. Still - there are only 2 more weeks of the season to go.

Today was not very spectacular. Pretty cloudy, middling warm (but not as warm as it has been due to lack of sun), and a bit windy. Humph - boring. forgot to take my camera, I'm sorry. Embarassed Hopefully tomorrow will be better. Snow OK til about midday on Cretes and then mushy. Valentin not too bad at about 12.30, but on it's way. Sad

Today was largely cloudy but with bright spells. There was wind at 2,600m in the morning, but it had vanished by the afternoon. AM the snow was very nice at Toura area and down Gours, heavy on the nursery slopes at midday, but very nice at the glacier in the afternoon. All the way to 2,600 was fine although a little wet on the lower sections. We didn't bother to ski below that at 16.30 but came down inthe Jandri Express.

There were a lot of loonies around today - hopefully they won't be staying for the week, but every lesson (except the beginners) was beset by young adults either straight-lining runs and nearly knocking us over, or just going far too fast and far to close. As usual we took the Echines to avoid the crowds on Signal. Very Happy

Pix looking out of a white egg at the nursery slopes, showing they're still there and skiable, and also of the crowds on Serre Palas late in the day with the mist.

Re insurance - I'd read the small print very carefully about definitions etc of what constitutes off piste

I have Dog Tags extreme sports policy - I'm pretty well covered for most - though not beyond 4,500ms even with a guide - that's covered by another policy......and yet I'm not covered for ski touring without a guide with what I currently have - I will read again definition of off piste but I'm fairly sure LG on my own I'd not be covered - I'll go and have a read again...............

And in response to Swirly I've been riding LG for well over ten years and know the safer route(s) down the glacier to take me back into Chancal, but I'm still cautious, hence ringing up mate the day before - trouble is many of the tourists that come over from LDA have no fecking idea of where they are going, but at this time of year Vallons is pretty well a piste and that's the main route they all take - always amusing is like lemmings they all follow each other missing out on some better and easier pitches if they bothered to look around and do some simple traversing - and very few even know Chancal exists!!

So back home in the UK now - plan is to come back in a couple of weeks for some high hut touring and take advanatage of any last minute dumps at altitude if conditions allow...............

and all the crevases? Take a look at the photo in P3 next time you're up there. I have no problem with anyone wanting to ride down La Grave by themselves, obvious caveats regarding snowpack and ability (not just ski ability) apply, but going off on a glacier on your todd regardless of how well skied is not the best idea.

Not really skied here for the last few days, met up with Arno on Friday at AdH so have been making use of his beta, could do with it staying sunny for a couple more days to get some more runs there done and make the most of the days on the lift pass we get. Also went to PSV, I imagine there's some amazing stuff off the back otherwise I don't get what the fuss is about Puzzled

Colin B, sorry you're no longer here - great to see you again. Very Happy

today was super and sunny and warm in the village, but a lively wind cooled things down on the glacier. The Cretes was OK first thing - hard but not icy. Bellecombe was very good, but Grand Nord was a bit hard. The nursery slopes were gungy at midday, and then up to the glacier int he afternoon. snow on the piste was good, and the snow on the Echines was fab packed powder and very few bumps. Very Happy Very Happy Up Signal chair and down Serre Palas and then off to the 'hidden valley' where the snow was slightly variable but on the whole very good right up until we rejoined the Gours at about 16.30. That was mucky of course. We came down by the Belle Etoile chair in preference to waiting for the eggs for 20 mins, but the traverse back over to the centre was really slow, sticky and a mess.

Unfortunately the new batteries I put in the camera didn't work, so no pix I'm afraid. Sad

It's sad that R32, have left (yes - they are 2 people)! Hopefully they'll be well on their way home by now. Not fun though for Mr R32, to have to drive all the way back to gateshead by himself and for Mrs R32, to have such a long journey with a damaged leg and feeling pretty crook. Sad We'll think of them when we're all eating in Binh's tomorrow night - wanted them to come but ..... they're not here. Sad Sad

today was colder, cloudier and very windy. Unpleasant at the glacier but snowing this afternoon so I have hopes for tomorrow as it's forecast to snow. Puzzled There was a lot of very hard snow around high up where the wind has blown anything soft off the top, Sad but in the middle there was still good snow. Very Happy Low down is a slush fest in the afternoon, but the Belle Etoile bumps were nice and soft - big, but soft. Very Happy Very Happy I'm afraid I must be overtired now, because this morning I changed the batteries on the camera yet again, and then forgot to take it. Embarassed Embarassed

WOW - BRILLIANT - FANTASTIC! It cleared up, there was loads of powder and it was only a little windblown. The Echines is HUGE, and I had some not too bad kids first thing. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Lots of lift problems on the glacier today, but apart from that, 2 runs down the Echines and then a quicker shoot down the blues to the Cretes - great snow everywhere excepte below the Cretes (Valentin and nursery slopes) which was disgusting. January snow on the glacier and most of the way down. Very Happy
2 pix of l'Echines showing tracks and powder puffs + blue skies.

easiski, Hope everyone enjoyed the meal at Binh's, we were thinking of you.

You were right, journey was pretty uncomfortable and poor Mr R32 was very tired by the time we got home. Luckily we were not delayed by the truckers strike, although we did pass a 'stack' of them near Epercleques and there were loads of them in queues on the sliproads in Calais. Luckily we had booked a hotel in Calais and so pleased we had changed our booking to an earlier one a few days ago....didn't even know about the strike then!! Had to get up at 4am Shocked to check in at the Tunnel though!! Straight through, but lots of security checks going on....and a coach load of German football fans drinking bottles of vodka, etc at 6 in the morning rolling eyes

Went to Casualty today, the doctor couldn't find the fracture on my x-rays, after consulting 'someone' else they found it! I have an appointment on Tuesday with the fracture/trauma specialist and hopefully an MRI scan. Oh and a week off work....so watch this space.
