Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Another alternative would be to turn all ski apartments into debtors' prisons. Charles Dickens' father John Dickens was famously locked up for running into debt in 1824.

The Victorians and Georgians took a very harsh view of the sin of debt. They'd probably drop dead at the sight of today's consumer society and plastic money! They might be partial to a bit of apres, admittedly.

Yes but wouldn't the lack of cheap airlines and long transfer times at that time put a bit of a damper on ski holidays?

stephen buck, Hi I am in Val Thorens right now. Is your problem solved. If not PM me and I will see if I can sort things out. I do not think if all is in order that it should be a problem. Waiting to hear from you.

Funnily enough, the many many days it took to get from London to the Alps by horse-drawn coaches didn't put off people like Mary Shelley, Lord Byron and Dickens. Shelley wrote 'Frankenstein' in a villa in Geneva in 1816, and the second encounter of Victor Frankenstein with his monster is based on her visit to the Mer de Glace above Chamonix.

Not a lot of people need to know that.

Frankenstein wasn't a skier, so I'd agree with your central point.

admin, I disagree, No matter how busy one is you will always get back to the person asap, it is common decency. Not answering calls, hiding and hoping the trouble goes away is not the way to organise ones business. It does however show a chaps character. On a previous post I said give him to tuesday to sort out the problem, part payment has been achieved. I would give him until next tuesday if the funds do not arrive, evict and lose the balance. You cant have your property being squatted in and ignore it.

My advice to Stephen is, if in the forseeable future say next tuesday the balance has not been received evict. If you got the money to date fine, if you feel as if it might be the last money you receive for the season ask for the balance to be setteled by the coming week. At least you would not be out of pocket. If you do not get the full seasons money and you feel you may not evict and try and rent it to others.

Roy Hockley, there's a difference between the response times one might reasonably expect during normal business and those over the festive season. Failure to understand that, will surely result in a disappointing and frustrating end/start to each year.
Stephen referred at one point to his issue being 3 weeks old. A week has passed since, during which he's been paid 2 month's rent. Could be that they're a month ahead now? A crime to be sure - expose them all! Make a documentary on them and damn their sorry asses to ITV reality show hell rolling eyes
Maybe they're not ahead; maybe their 2 month payment put them 'only' 4 months behind? I don't know, do you? And that's the point really: I don't have enough knowledge of any of these people and their situation to defend them, nor am I qualified to damn them and I suggest that neither are you.

There’s some great advice and support in this topic but also rather a lot knee-jerk opinionating which goes rather beyond what the available information qualifies. I hope and trust that Stephen is wise enough know which is which.

admin, yes, I've heard they eat babies and pee in the beer. Must be true cos their website's down... wink

What's known in business as "a little local difficulty" has escalated way too publically and well beyond what it needs to have done. I agree that he's probably, right now, slightly ahead of the game and just worrying about the rest of the season. A little lesson in cash flow would probably help him. Go buy a bar and run it for a while. And anyway, how much is an airfare... why hasn't he doorstopped them to discuss the matter mano-a-mano? Respect to the F&RB guys... I'd be making him wait by now too just for a laugh. Their new-found notoriety will only sell more beer.

Drats! I'd meant to change the wording to 'by the Lake of Geneva'.

My understanding is that Lord Byron was ... err ... paying the rent on the villa ... err ... reliably!

the bottom line is that there is always two sides to an issue and without knowing all the details we should be cautious about taking sides. It looks like things are a lot closer to being acceptable and we should let it all rest for while.

This thread is a good case for the moderators deleting all similar threads in the future (and this one now) ie where a snowhead tries to pursue a civil dispute via the forum. Here is simply is not the place.

Dare I suggest T&Cs be amended accordingly? Skullie

achilles, I'm tempted to remind you of a complaint you had with a certain tour operator, using the full force of publicity to resolve it. Let us cast our minds back to 7 Feb 2005 ...
achilles wrote:
I normally enjoy skiing in Switzeralnd. But last week in Verbier I was dismayed by the half-board evening meals at our 3 star hotel. The accommodation was good, the snow brilliant. But the food was appalling. I could have done better with some Tesco Value tins. MacDonald’s would have been a gourmet delight in comparison. Despite strong efforts in our group to get this sorted, many on the party couldn't face the final dinner, and did not eat it. There was a lot of acrimony, and it really did spoil the enjoyment of the holiday. First time I have felt let down in that country. But it obviously can happen.

And ... 9 days later ...
achilles wrote:

The problem has now been sorted through the TO (which was the SCGB). The group has received what I think is a reasonable rebate.

So, it's OK for you to 'shame on snowHeads' your own club into refunding you, but not OK for someone else to chase some (allegedly) overdue rent?

David Goldsmith, but he only mentioned the TO involved after the dispute had been settled privately. Puzzled

It seemed to me that it was settled in the full glare of publicity. It's a bit like streaking - you either do it in private (maybe across a desert, or your living room) or you do it across Lords in front of 50,000 spectators.

David Goldsmith, so run that by me again. The guy mentions a problem with an unnamed hotel's food; nine days later, he names the TO after a 'reasonable rebate' has been agreed privately; and you're saying that example is the same as the running commentary we've had here?

Also, I don't see where a third party has offered to go around and sort things out for him. Puzzled

I'm saying that the two scenarios are comparable. Both demonstrate the use of a public forum to air a grievance, as an aid to obtaining financial redress.

If that was a case of 'settling something privately' then I'm Heather McCartney.

achilles is proposing an accentuated level of censorship for snowHeads, as above, but there are adequate laws of defamation to deal with the potential problems of this thread already.

"Lots of other little people" are going to read one-sided points of view, or get involved in very tedious arguments that have nothing to do with them. Let's hope it doesn't keep happening here.

PS from what I have skim-read, the accused was one of the "little people".

Too much tut-tutting, achilles.

Nobody forces anyone to "get involved", either by reading this stuff or contributing to it. It's just a discussion, which is there to be ignored if it's causing annoyance. You say it's "tedious", but others have found it interesting or entertaining enough to sustain into a 7th page.

Let's hear it for freedom of speech, even when it doesn't suit certain vested interests. The kind of censorship you've proposed above, with yet more rules, doesn't go hand in hand with the spirit of free expression that a forum must embrace. Rules are for rulers.

I agree with jbob's sentiment that the internet has made the world a more democratic and fair place, which is why some powers are trying to suppress it.

Who rules the internet? Hopefully no one.
