Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

G is for Gaper

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
A gaper is a skiier or snowboarder who is completely clueless. Usually distiungished by their bright colored clothes and a gaper gap, the gap between goggles and a helment/hat. Gapers also do the "Gaper Tuck" which is an attempt at being a ski racer by tucking, however, it is done incorrectly with the poles sticking straight up like thunderbolts and lighting, very very frightning! Gapers also sit at the bottom of jumps and try and go big off table tops in the park.

They are usually:
1. On holiday
2. Looks like an idiot on the mountain and takes gigantic turns on flat cat tracks
3. Is totally oblivious to the fact that they look like an idiot and are skiing icy bumps directly under the lift when there is powder stashed all over mountain, or stashed in the trees right next to them.

Usages:
1. My eyes are burning from that gapers bright colored clothes.
2. I fell off the chair laughing at that gaper tuck.
3. Did you just see that gaper getting landed on because he was sitting like a dumbass at the landing of a jump.

Personally I really hate this word "gaper" - never mind the fact it's just another example of how our trans-atlantic cousins can't spell - they pronounce it "gapper".

Right, that aside:

i) magicrichard, which ski resort is closest to bath/durham - I presume you're not a tourist. Is it the Chiltern range?

ii) If you can take big, controlled turns on a flat cat track more power to you! This is, imo, akin to taking bit sweeping turns on ice-skates, it takes power and control to look graceful
without gravity to help you.

iii) Skiing icy bumps? Again, hats off to you - anyone who CHOOSES a difficult line under a chairlift will always get the thumbs up from me.

iv) Brightly coloured clothes? Um, haven't you *seen* how ski "fashion" has evolved over the last 3-4 years - not to everyone's taste I know, but this comment is out-moded (badoom tish!)

v) The "gaper tuck" was taught almost exclusively to Brits during the 80s and can be witnessed at any SCGB event - much to my glee!

vi) People tend to fall the first few times they take air. If you take a lot of air or land awkwardly it can knock the wind out of you, of course you should scramble to the side - *but* it's the rules/etiquette of skiing that the rider behind has the responsibility of NOT taking out another rider. If you take a line that you can't see don't come crying if you come around a corner and there's someone there!

DB,

In the first video they are very similar to French holiday skiers, in both the parodied skiing and clothing style!

I really don't like the slight snobbery that usually comes with usage of the 'gaper' tag.

Can a Gappy be a Gaper?
The gaping gap between goggles and helmet is supposed to define the "Gaper".
Then the explanatory movie shows people in exhibitionist but practical '80s One Piece suits. Before the era of the punterhelm.
I doubt if the modern era skiers could make the big '80s skis work.
Let alone ski them offpiste, on ice, down bumps.
