Poster: A snowHead

Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, now 43, leapt into the spot-light, if not onto the podium, at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary when he took part in the ski jumping competition. Now, Steve Coogan is set to play Eddie in a new biopic. He said of Eddie: "His story is a very British story, and he is a very British kind of hero.”
The widespread attention that Eddie received in 1988 turned into something of an embarrassment for the ski jumping establishment, many of whom felt that Eddie, a plasterer from Cheltenham, made a mockery of the sport.
...Shortly after the Olympics finished, the entry requirements were greatly toughened, making it next to impossible for anyone to follow his example.

That sound like fun!
Anyone see Coogan play the Austrian ambassador in Marie Antoinette? I kept expecting some crass faux pas but it didn't happen!

Personally think the FIS/GB team missed a huge opportunity with the eagle to promote their support outside of traditional countries. I guess at the time they didn't know how to react to generate positive PR out of the situation. I felt sorry for eddie that he had the rug pulled from beneath him re qualifications given his struggle to make the grade, he had spirit and personality - something half our sports 'stars' can barely relate to.

skinutter, He may have had spirit and personality, but, at the end of the day, he was a crap ski jumper. It's one thing to compete and get well beaten (as most British sportsman manage to do quite well) but, IMO, he was just embarrassing.

Haven't they upped the rules now where you have to be a certain standard, not just the best (only) rep for your country ? (ie. Eddie wouldn't get in now)

Long overdue IMHO and I totally disagree with you gwaelod and johnnyboy.
Easy to ridicule Eddie's involvement in the discipline but if you haven't stood at the top of the run-in you have no comprehension of the courage AND skill involved in letting go, flying, and landing.
I have far more respect for Eddie Edwards and for his efforts than for a large, and growing, number of British athletes who have abused their position as ambassadors for their chosen sporting discipline.
He didn't break any rules to represent Great Britain at the Olympics.
He is a tremendous role model, demonstrating hard work, perseverance in the face of ridicule, and making the most of his talent.
And always with humility, honesty and personality.
I for one hope he receives the recognition, and if it's going monetary reward, he thoroughly deserves from this biopic.
Coogan is known as a comic, but having seen him act in '24 Hour Party People' I think he can do Eddie and the story justice.

Steve Coogan says it all. Eddie must have had "balls of titanium" Right or wrong he was a folk hero here in the US.

I've stood up there, no skis attached.
I consider myself quite a ballsy person, I've enjoyed lots of "extreme" sports etc. No fekkin way on earth would I have had the guts!
