The girl "sustained bruises and a split lip". The dad gave the snowboarder a slap. Why did this go to court complete madness.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Frosty the Snowman, I totally understand the reaction of becoming angry when someone hurts your nearest and dearest, I just don't think that being angry justifies punching someone.

Kramer, I agree, but I can see a set of circumstances that could sadly result in that outcome. Anger is a strnage thing and ids influenced by many other factors. Sleep, stress, emotional stateetc etc

rpft, What I was referring to, was in all the posts before it was said that people "get angry and lost control and get violent".
There are people who are so use to violent behavior that they do not need to get angry to use violence. What I am saying (badly) is maybe his normal action was to strike out.
The world is not full of good hearted Snowheads

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Colorado has a bit of a track record in people litigating these thing including a liftie who killed someone at Vail a couple of years' back.
My immediate reaction to these things is as Martin Bell so eloquently put it the FIS code isn't ranked strictly and even if it was it doesn't solve everything - imagine driving on a road where every side entrance or parked car had priority.
Add this to the fact that some people will always turn their brains off when on holiday or have unrealistic expectations as to absolute safety, their ability etc and there will always be accidents. I imagine skiing with your kids is tremendous fun but it must be necessary to accept that they will always be a bit vulnerable for the brief period before they are faster than everyone else on the hill.

You know it makes sense.

Somewhere in this "punching him in the face" has been interpreted as giving him a smack. They seem to me to be different. One frequently requires hospital treatment, the other sounds like, well, a smack.
Punching someone in the face is wrong in all circumstances, except, maybe, in self defence - and that is not applicable in the case we are talking about.
