Yeah, I was thinking that wasn't much as well. I just did a quick calculation, and at 100kph 0.2 seconds is only 5.6 metres!

It doesn't answer the question (on another thread) about whether snow tyres are obligatory in Austria in the winter. Thinking of driving to Obergurgl next winter so this question is important in relation to potential cost.

Which makes NO difference at all to your reaction times.
And virtually no difference to stopping distance if you are reasonably competent.

Which is about a car length. How often have you seen motorway traffic with one or more cars that close to the one in front?

Once it snows and you start losing traction your car is deemed as not being fit for it's purpose and Austrian insurance companies often don't pay out. I've struggled to get up the steep Obergurgl road even with winter tyres during a storm. There's even more risk coming down as your braking distances are much longer than someone with winter tyres. Yes you can put snow chains on for the descent but don't be surprized if the slippy back end overtakes the front of the car. You won't see it over there but every year in the local papers there are details about winter crashes (inc motorway pile ups) where people with summer tyres are involved.

FAQ
They do in fact have measurement points on the motorways, usually under bridges, and the fines for 'Draengeln' are heavy. So if you are driving through Germany on the way to Austria... Beware!
