Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Number 11 is an interesting one:

Quote:

Insufficient safe following distance - 0,2 to 0,4 seconds
Additional fine up to € 726
Under especially dangerous conditions: € 2180

I think we could do with that in this country

Yeah, I was thinking that wasn't much as well. I just did a quick calculation, and at 100kph 0.2 seconds is only 5.6 metres! Shock

It doesn't answer the question (on another thread) about whether snow tyres are obligatory in Austria in the winter. Thinking of driving to Obergurgl next winter so this question is important in relation to potential cost.

Which makes NO difference at all to your reaction times.

And virtually no difference to stopping distance if you are reasonably competent.

Which is about a car length. How often have you seen motorway traffic with one or more cars that close to the one in front?

You can't be driving that fast if you're still "following"!

Once it snows and you start losing traction your car is deemed as not being fit for it's purpose and Austrian insurance companies often don't pay out. I've struggled to get up the steep Obergurgl road even with winter tyres during a storm. There's even more risk coming down as your braking distances are much longer than someone with winter tyres. Yes you can put snow chains on for the descent but don't be surprized if the slippy back end overtakes the front of the car. You won't see it over there but every year in the local papers there are details about winter crashes (inc motorway pile ups) where people with summer tyres are involved.

Remember the 1970's mantra? - Only a fool breaks the two second rule.

iblair, just for your information, in Germany the rule is that you are supposed to keep a distance in meters equivalent to 50% of your curent speed. I.e if doing 240Km/H you should be at least 120m behind the guy in front Toofy Grin They do in fact have measurement points on the motorways, usually under bridges, and the fines for 'Draengeln' are heavy. So if you are driving through Germany on the way to Austria... Beware!

As far as winter tyres are concerned, the rules here are that it's up to you to decide, BUT if you have an accident and have summer tyres then you will be apportioned a much bigger share of the blame and may well have problems getting your insurance to pay up at all! Personally I think you'd have to be crazy to drive to the Alps with only summer tyres on rolling eyes
