dtol,
Well we went with Family ski company who were excellent. Ski school helper made all the difference for our 4 yr old. Childcare was good and both 4 yr old and 2 yr old were very happy with it. Have heard esprit are good too- but I am unhappy about coaches without seatbelts so we have never been with them

Well I'm back from La Plagne, great resort, but don't go if you want apres ski.
Conditions were amazing at the beginning of the week, but the sun ruined it at the end of the week, with really bad ice
If you were there last week did you see a guy in a superman outfit?

Well there only seems to be restaurants in Belle Plagne where I stayed, but in Plagne Centre there are loads of pubs, think there is one called scotties thats at the bottom of the night slope in La Plagne and there seems to be lots of english there, if thats your scene.
but apres ski is rubbish, but it was good becuase we made it to the slopes at 9 everyday, well walked out of the front of our hotel and we were on a slope, lol

notverygoodatskiing, I'd put money on them being better than current (though the weather may not be great all week). Too far to know how much though.

notverygoodatskiing, possibly. Or rain. Or just lots of wind and cloud. It's too far for details, but the ensembles are showing a reasonably strong preference for colder, wetter weather. That could change, but it looks very likely that there will have been fresh snow between now and then, which will improve things at least.
This is the latest rainfall/snowfall forecast for the Sunday: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn3124.png and here's the wind: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rtavn31212.png
Those are far less likely to be right than wrong, but if the general synopsis were to be right it could be similar weather. It's worth noting that on the endemble chart, the operational run is an outlier on that day for precipitation & pressure - so the temperature agreement is probably for the wrong reasons.

notverygoodatskiing, that's in the previous 6 hours. Ignore that side of it. You'd need to add up the amounts from each chart to get a total, and GFS is not great at getting the actual totals correct at 24 hours, let alone two weeks. It's the presence of it that's important at the moment.
I think this is La Plagne: http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/MS_645_ens.png

notverygoodatskiing, the upper set of lines generally below the red line = good. The bottom set of lines generally showing "spikes" = good. Better would be the previous two, but with the lines less spread out and closer to the grey line. See "Beginners guide to GFS" sticky at the top of the forum for more details.

notverygoodatskiing, wanted to do the skidoos and the bobsleigh but forgot to attend the Crystal meeting on the Sunday night - got a bit mashed on the local brew!
We had snow on the Sat and Sun night (from what i can remember!!) but very little through the week so it got a bit icy on some runs, particularly the l'Arpette run into Plagne Centre, which I promptly stacked it on and nearly had the rescue guys coming out to attend! A load of French skiers were quite worried about me but typical British grit and determination (and shame for stacking it) saw me hobble through!!!
Have you been before? If you haven't, there is so much in the way of runs that I honestly couldn't have found time to do anything but board for the seven days! I'm a beginner but managed my first blue run on the first day (the Bellecote run into Belle Plagne) and on day two, did the mogul-infested red run from up above Belle Plagne, which was a bit hairy but fun 'cos of loads of powder. Grab the long Collossus out of Plagne Bellecote and jump on the Mira run into Plagne Centre if you want a nice leisurely run or go up to Roche De Mio and do the tunnel for a bit of fun. It was well busy early afternoon though.
I maybe did about about 1/10th of the blues, one red and no blacks... thank god!!
I don't know your skill level but if you (or any of your group) want a nice bit of learning territory then head to the green run at the beginner's area in Plagne Centre. I spent a day there and it really helped me gain confidence after a few too many coccyx-bruising spills! I got my back bottom spanked by my missus mind... women seem to be a lot more patient than blokes!!

Well GFS is seriously wobbling about that now. Looking warmer for that week. Still very early and still "better than now" but it'll (probably) change a few times between now and then.
Really need to see what happens after Thursday. The models are still having problem with the high pressure.

notverygoodatskiing, the Crystal rep was running trips on Thursdays to the bobsleigh track so I take it that it's up and running.
There's a beginner's area at Plagne Bellecote but it's not that big. The one at Plagne Centre is great (about 400 - 500 metres long), although some of the 'tossers' use it as a cut through from the faster runs to the Arpette chair lift. Once you've done that then there are two good options:
You do the les Mines run (blue) from the bottom of the beginner's run. I didn't get a chance but it looks ace. It's a reallyt windy course that runs over the roads on bridges and through tunnels down to just above Plagne 1800, where you can get a lift back to Plagne Centre.
Alternatively (and I seriously recommend this for the buzz), get on the cable car from Plagne Centre up to La Grand Rochette. It takes about 10 minutes and takes you over the snow paerk where there's loads of jumps and grinds that can be done if you come down from the top on the carina run. We did the whole of the Mira run (blue) from the top of La Grande Rochette - it was awesome! You couldn't see more than 20 yards ahead of you going down the first major slope and apart from a few moguls, it was the BEST thing I've ever done. It's a really steep run at first but manageable if you barn door it and once you get further down it's really nice flowing turns, although there are some annoying flats for boarders. I had a major tumble though and kind of lost my confidence towards the end. it was awesome though!!!
There's a great sandwich shop in the shopping area at Plagne Centre right isnide the door. The mahoosive salami sandwiches are nice.

Specialman, THe Arpette is in Bellecote, you're thinking of the Melezes, its not a cut through- its the only way to get there and you have to "whizz" as its bloody flat!!!!
If you do take the Mine track, be careful, its usually pretty patchy and theres a flat bit at the bottom to the 1800 chair. You'll then need to get another chair to get back to Plagne Centre- I would carry on going down towards Montalbert and get the Coqs lift back up - much more fun.

Nadenoodlee, I'd agree Les Mines was pretty grim last April and that was with tonnes of snow, also the flat bit towards the lift can be very icy early on: we were in 1800 and the run back involved hooning down mines and then cutting into the trees on the right. The end of the run was used to get to the lift in the morning: hence the ice. The best blues for boarding are probably those over the back of the main ridge and the ones on the glacier: no major flat spots to contend with.
