This is regional. Ski resorts are destination resorts, hills are small vertical (midwest, etc.), ski areas are the more traditional local lift-served terrain (Loveland, A Basin, Ski Cooper Colorado and the like). This is very informal...

A snowplow is a braking wedge in the US. This is in contrast to a gliding wedge which has the skis in a wedge shape, but keeps the skis on much less angle (braking is not an intent of a gliding wedge).

Well, "sandals" are not the same as "thongs" or "flip flops" in the US. Thongs and flip flops are synonyms for the same type of footware ("thong" and "flip-flops" tend to be regional in the US):
Sandals are a more general term for informal footwear that doesn't cover the entire foot.
