hairygerbil, you may want to look at La Rosiere, there are a good mix of blues and reds, some blacks and a lot of off-piste. The runs back to the resort are mostly blue so with 2 weeks skiing they should be within your ability. The ski area is shared with La Thuile in Italy so it's avery different resort from the mega stations nearby but with 150kms of pistes there ought to be more than enough to keep you happy for a week. The lift pass is verty good value at just on £100.00 for six days in France and Italy and the village has a very good snow record. The resort is better known with French families so it's not mega busy but there are a reasonable collection of bars and restaurants and New Year is always a lively time, you may have difficulty getting booked for New Year, our chalet is full but www.morealps.com may have some spaces. If you fancy a totally French experience we would recommend Le Relais du Petit St Bernard it's a 2star hotel right by the pistes. There are a few major UK TOs who offer chalets in La Rosiere, it's Ski Espirit's most popular destination, Ski Olympic have a good selection of chalets and Fisrstchoice/Thopmpsons have pitched up in past few years.

Is there a lively evening atmosphere in La Rosiere with good apres ski? I have never been but got the impression it was quite a small quiet family resort.

I have never been to La Rosiere but I can authoritatively report that it is a small quiet family resort, enjoyed by small quiet families. It also has a healthy rave scene, thriving hippy community and multi-ethnic carnival atmosphere.
