I mentioned to JT - I will be travelling to La Grave from La Roche on the Tuesday evening. via Lyons (LYS) airport. I am dropping my wife off there about 14:00, so can offer transport to La Grave if needed.

We arrive on 24th Feb leaving on 3rd March.

I did the same trip last year. We will have two guides and will just go wherever they tell us!

During the six days last year, we spent approx two and a half days in La Grave, half a day in Les Deux Alpes, one day in Alpe d'Huez and two days in Serre Chevalier. The second day in Serre Chevalier was probably not originally intended by the guides but it was the last day of the trip and it was dumping it down with snow, so we went back there to ski in the trees. It was probably the best day's tree skiing I have ever had.

That week probably summed up what La Grave is about. You tend to use it as a base as La Grave itself is frequently closed so the guides just go where they think best. The guides have some deal with the other resorts in the area with regard to lift passes so the cost of buying day passes everywhere was not excessive.

The other resorts I mentioned although probably best known as intermediate and family resorts, do also have some excellent off piste.

I rang Francois last night, and he was slightly surprised that you'd asked me too! He says that as far as he's concerned it's all ahead full, and that he has an email from Graham and will reply, but just hasn't got round to it yet. I mentioned that you were all fairly excited and he agreed tht this would be normal!!! Very Happy

I was a just bit concerned as a) he seemed to have lost/mislaid my first email b) I still don't know we have two-way communication (other than via your good self), and I've had problems in the past with emails not getting to me from wanadoo (funnily enough from other French guides Wink

). So I guess "c'est normale" as well Very Happy

I quite like the look of St Luc....got any tips for jaunts in the whole area?

I can't see the way down on a poor map from Roc d Orzival...do you hike over the top and end up in a valley two ridges away and then find the path through woods to St Jean? I can see the intineraire from Pointe de T sirouc, that looks estblished.

JT, I haven't had a chance to go exploring yet, you can get detailed mapping online at http://gis.swissinfo.org , type "3961" into the postcode box, sadly you can't display a very big area though.

There's some interesting looking fairly short lines around the Abondance itineraire, you cut off left from the Orzival piste, not enough snow this Xmas. Sad

would be good to meet up, davidof. i think i've been talked into leading a week of ski touring for a club next year and was thinking the Belledonne might offer a good mixture of challenging skiing without too much full-on mountaineering required (well, it's not really glaciated anyway). plus not many Brits seem to go there which is always nice... would be good to talk to someone who knows the area
