johnboy, In the pass there is a bar/ diner called Roxys. Easter 05 we didnt see a rock or stone on piste all week and there was about a 3ft climb to get up to the bottom of the steps leading up to Roxys. 3rd week in Feb this year, the very top of the handrail from these steps was just visible on the 3 ft drop on to Roxys terrace. I reckon there was a 3m difference in the depth, but you could tell from the conditions of the piste.

johnboy, in a word, drifts.
The depth of the snow in the Ciste gully on Cairngorm was measured (by radar) at 33.53m in the epic 2001 season
110 feet in old money.

johnboy, the maximum snow depth on the piste last season was 4 metres. It is to do with geography, we're in the lee of the Mont Blanc massif, our weather systems come from the Atlantic winds, warm South Westerlies which blow straight up the Col de Petit San Bernardo until they hit Mont Blanc, they then dump on the Col and La Rosiere and La Thuille. It's a different weather pattern thanVal d'Isere which gets it's snow as a sresult of warm Southerly winds from Italy. The weather in the Tarentaise is very local, it can be snowing heavily in La Rosiere and completely dry in Les Arcs just across the Valley, a direct distance of about 5/6kms. When you're in La Rosiere get Emma or ryan to take you to Willy's bar, Willy has a video he shot last year when the Col opened, he was the first car through, you'll see 9 -10 metre snow walls where the road has been cut through.

The best way to save your budget is not to use a travel agent - if you have the spirit and patience hunting for all the best deals online then DIY and save a small fortune.
This year I spent about £2,000 on ten days in France for a family of four including flights into Geneva, car hire, chalet and lift passes.

depends on if we stay in a chalet (self cater, private rental) or an apartment
7-10 day holiday:
Tunnel about £120-£150
Tolls £55
Diesel £200
Food £100
Accommodation £300 - £650 (inc hotel up and down...)
Passes £140
Contingency £500 (wine, beer, kit, lunches out etc etc etc etc etc etc...)
Go via a local immobilier and off the beaten track in January or March/April and you can get some seriously good accommodation at silly prices.

For me, it always seems to work out at a clear £1K per week in Europe. That's for a nice chalet, flights, transfers lift pass (no ski hire) and all the lovely food and drink I can manage! I know some people are hardcore skiers and just want budget accommodation, but although I put the hours in on the slope, I would hate to stay somewhere that wasn't welcoming and cosy and lovely. A hot tub is a bit of a necessity or at least a big deep bath! I can't bear some of the tiny chalet rooms with those awful electric heaters that you can never work out how to use.
For Japan, Canada or US it's more like £1500 -- £1800 but that's usually for longer than a week, and I try not to work it out -- ouch!
Em x

Yeah I do all that, I was more wondering about spending money in resort, how do you keep that down in the alps? I also thought private lessons and lift passes would bring you over the £500 per week mark

Haven't worked it out in detail. Cheapest is when me and Mrs Axs dump the kids with relatives (wahay!!) and go by ourselves, probably around £1200 all in. Dearest was last March when we took two of them with us to Heavenly. Cost over £8K for the 11 days, but that did include 3 days at Vegas and a day trip to the Grand Canyon!

I am surprised by how wealthy and extravagant you all seem.
I tend to account for sub £500 holidays using the train so I get both Saturday - obviously I am not including beer in that amount as there can never be any telling in how thirsty one might find oneself, but last time I managed to spend less than £200 for a week on said incidentals and that was travelling with two girls!
btw - I am talking French Alps here, and slumming it in an apartment/home cooking/picnics
