Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Lech-Zürs that has the edge.

Now that St Manton has gone silly prices, and continues to attract the p*sshead skiers, I'll stick to Zurs or Lech as my ski-base. wink

I'm out there next Sunday for a few days, part of my Fly-Drive-Ski Tour.

Thanks @munich_irish. I actually have @Langerzug on Ignore, so I had not seen the response. Some of what he says is true, but as usual, it is written in his snide and bitchy style, with which I could not be bothered.

Arguing which is better is like intellectual masturbation: stimulating but unproductive. Better how? It all comes down to what appeals and works for you. It is an individual thing. It is an opinion.

For me, one acid test is whether I could spend the entire ski day in that area. I could not in Lech and find myself either passing through, or maybe doing a side-trip down Langer or Furkawang, on then onwards. Nothing much else appeals TO ME. I certainly could in Zürs, and did just that last Tuesday. Epic powder day. Best I have skied in many a year.

It is true that much of Warth is in shade in the early winter. The plus of that is that great snow can be found in the side pistes for a long time after a snow fall. It probably also contributes to less people during that time.

It is also true that Lech is more central than St Anton, but why would I stay there if most days I would head out of the place?

I find (again, my opinion) St Anton to be a more complete resort. I could stay there for weeks even if it was not connected to the Arlberg. A week in a disconnected Lech would drive me bat-poo crazy. St Anton has genuine tree skiing, eg Zwischen or a number of lines off Rendl North. St Anton comprises 3 mountains, each with their characters. It has serious off piste options. In bad weather there are some decent options. Warts and all, it is my second home.

@ulmerhutte, not too many warts regards St Anton in my experience (yes some idiots but they are only trying to have fun, and that’s no bad thing, so long as they behave), OK the prices have gone crazy but that’s the world we live in, its a much friendlier place than Vorarlberg and the affordable restaurants (eg Buddha/ Galzigbistrobar etc) are much better imv. I really like staying in Lech and tbh don’t find it too limiting, both very different and excellent in different ways, my go to places in recent years, winter and summer. Have stayed in Warth a few times, quite limited on piste but great off the sides, better in summer for hiking as a place to stay imo. My favourite ski areas Rendl, Galzig/ Schindler and Albona are all in Anton so when we stay in Lech we dip over anyway, says something……that said Lech has fabulous skiing also and Muggengrat/ Zug and Langerzug not too shabby. All good.

@ulmerhutte, I came to the conclusion a good while ago that the Arlberg is by far the best ski area in the eastern Alps, you can make arguments for Verbier, Zermatt, Chamonix & Val d'Isere but that's about it. No doubt a different experience staying in St Anton over Lech (or Warth, Stuben, Zürs ) they just suit different people. You & I prefer St Anton but others will have their own view. Biggest issue is how expensive it has become......

Just returned from Lech, first time there after quite a few trips to St Anton. Skiing different but as now 80 not looking for no fall zone skiing. Very helpful info from @Markymark29, made for a great week and prices not too bad if stayed away from the Bollinger area.

Scrap Chamonix from that list (at least as a resort. Great hardcore stuff, but not a great place for your average resort skier) and add 3 Vallees and you have no argument from me.

I love it ..

Everyone chooese to stay in St Anton but then spends all day riding the lifts over to Lech, Zurs Warth and then spend 1-2 hours eating lunch

Why not just book a Hotel in Lech or Zürs and stay over there ?

Many folks do not realise that nowadays it can be much cheaper to stay in Lech than St Anton...if you look around for deals and also the Kurtaxe (tourist tax) is less only €3.80 per night ...

Where as very few guests who stay in Lech & Zürs make the trip over to St Anton... Mainly just private Ski guides from Zürs.

Its someting like guests 90% St Anton --- Lech 10% Lech- St-Anton

Folks come on here complaining how busy the slopes are but this is just in the morning as thousands wrecklessly speed ski (beyond there ability) head over to the West Arlberg and then again on the return leg late afternoon (completely tired) to St Anton.. When most accidents happen.

Meanwhile in St Anton during hours of 10:00 -15:00 hrs the slopes are completely empty (all season) ... Love it !!

Do they not like St Anton's challenging varied terrain?? Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

THe only way to stop this carpet (speed) skiing madness is to

STOP THE BRUTAL GROOMING

@TOLOCOMAN, Not impressed with 3V when I went (though a long time ago) far too much cruisy skiing, too many folk with too much money. Chamonix has some of the most iconic skiing in the world not just the alps, not a place suitable for less experienced skiers though (same could be said about St Anton). Arguably it more of a summer place than a winter one.

@stanton, unless the weather is rubbish who spends an hour let alone 2 having lunch. Perhaps its a Dutch thing Smile

Might want to try it again then. That's what I think is great about it. Almost everyone stays on the groomers, and the challenging stuff (which there is plenty of) gets left untouched for days.

And while Cham has epic skiing, not much of the epic stuff is at what most would call a ski resort. Why I wouldn't call Cham a great ski resort.

@stanton, it is a big, wide world out there, and many find it worth exploring. The Arlberg is 80+ lifts, depending if you add Sonnenkopf, and your lift ticket price covers all of them.

I would imagine most people here for a week will want to explore beyond StA for at least one day. Why not?

Given the time, I am here, I certainly enjoy the variety. Some days, I enjoy beating my brains out in something like Mattun. Other days, I feel like a relaxed cruisey day, and might just ski to Warth/Schröcken for the heck of it. Sometimes the powder is better in Zürs, like it was last Tuesday.

You can stick to your Stamppot, but I will continue to enjoy the variety this world offers.

@munich_irish, as you probably are very well aware, there are maaaaany more Dutch in St.Anton than in Lech/Zürs/Warth Very Happy
But for sure, If I was staying for several weeks I would rather not ski during snowy/gloomy days.....Not very pleasant, and not worth the risk(!). Whilst you can call me anytime for a lovely lunch at friendly Formarin in Oberlech (not 'Bollinger' at all) in glorious sunny weather overlooking beautiful Lech...Followed by a last run on Langerzug, or maybe even a late afternoon Weisse Ring....Madloch in afternoon light can be so lovely.... Very Happy
@ulmerhutte, could it be that the 'disconnectedness' you are experiencing in Lech is related to the fact that Nasserein is simply too far away, and you still need to really get to know all pistes and the many connections and combinations etc. in detail, as you do know in St.Anton (which has not that clearcut a skimap either...)

@nunex, not a lot that is exciting to report today, nor for the rest of the week, if the forecast is to be believed. The temps are quite marginal. There could be some new snow, but it could just as likely be that word that we shall not mention. (Right this minute, in Nasserein, it is the latter. Sad )

It was warm today. Very warm. The higher up runs, eg above 1800-1900m, are still skiing well. Below that level the snow was a bit like semi-frozen slurpee, except in the snow-making areas.

The exposed ice from the race track on Nasserein was too much for me, and I suspect many mortals. It was like glass. Actually, the last, steep pitch on Kandahar was not a whole lot more enjoyable.

I did not venture much into the side piste. The little I tried off the side of Osthang Einfahrt was not much fun. Rather chunky.

Bottom line: there is still enjoyable skiing, but we seriously need a decent freshen-up with new snow.

That’s a bummer… I was hoping for a good week, I’m going there next Saturday.

Last year went in February and it was rather bad. It was fun, but not what we were expecting from a resort like St Anton.

Guess this year will be a bit better but still underwhelming…

As an aside, Dr K has moved his surgery to Moos: https://www.sportklinik-arlberg.at/ We went to his old location, next to the EWA offices at the Galzig end of town, only to find them empty.

Dr K is supposedly semi-retired, but my Wife saw him this morning. Lovely guy (and very knowledgeable)! His son has joined him in the practice. Specialises in orthopaedics - good career move in a ski town. FYI: there seems to be some awful, flu-like bug doing the rounds in the village.

@nunex, apart from odd days, the last 3 weeks have been great. It is NOTHING like last year. Full snow, over 330cm on the Galzig. All it needs is for the temps to drop again and 10 - 15cm fresh (a little more would be grand) and it will be awesome again.

Disappointing indeed! I'm going on Wednesday to Sunday this week

Can anyone tell me if there are any ski schools that do group lessons on Fridays? The main ski school arlberg doesn't seem to.

I was going to go out with an off piste group so wanted to find a ski school group for my wife to go out with. Thanks

I can vouch for Dr Knierzinger, having made use of his excellent clinic over the years. Broken collar on one occasion and a blocked artery on another. I think that the Moos facility has been in use for some years: it was there that my collar bone was supplemented with a metal plate. Here to tell the tale thanks to Dr. K, Very Happy

Snowing at a reasonable rate down here in the valley. Perhaps a bit less than 5cm accumulation, but likely to be more on the mountain. The Panorama channel is reporting 340cm depth on the Galzig.

Looks quite wet snow, which gels with the +0.5C current temp.

Could be a character-building day, with limited visibility and 60km/hr winds. I suspect there will be a delayed opening for the upper mountain lifts.

The first run on Kandahar was an experience! When I turned east to enter the slope proper, the wind carried me across the slope before I knew what was happening.

Had some very enjoyable runs in private powder on a closed Osthang. The sun peeked out briefly in the last one. Happy

@nunex, yup! Looks like we got something like 15 - 20cm on the mountain. We need one more cm… to hit the 350cm mark on Galzig.

The sun is now a more frequent visitor.

The upper lifts are still closed. Given it is 2pm, it is quite likely they will not open today.
