So France is now a no go. Due to travel this Sunday (19th). Where is everyone heading now? Started looking across the Atlantic but the prices over Christmas were extortionate!

I'm seriously considering buying a thicker wetsuit and heading surfing in Cornwall/Pembrokeshire this winter. I have already had to cancel 2 trips to France with more likely to go, it's the hope that kills you. I hope you all manage to hit the slopes if you want to.

We've got a trip booked to Italy on the 27th, so holding breath... Part of the group we are going with has dropped out due to restrictions, so there MAY be spaces if people are potentially interested.

@Mike Pow, I’m not a Fan of French skiing and this would have been our first trip there in Jan, for a number of years. I am not rushing back. Macron is not keen on the UK it seems. Switzerland , Italy, and Austria( not now I know), in future.

Me neither - always loved France but now inclined to never go again, apart from transiting
Sure their tourist trade will be livid - and let's face it France is in the same situation (or shortly will be)
Moronic as it is, hope UK Gov does the same back

All of Europe's resorts will be domestic skiers only pretty soon. To risky to plan or head to somewhere only to be left scrambling to get out as the rules change behind you.
Scotland could get very busier if the weather comes right for it

I have spotted some amazing deals to Bulgaria. I know the skiing isn’t the same level but for £350 all in (no ski pass) it’s better than being stuck at home. Their travel requirements are easy to understand.
Has anyone travelled that way recently?

Not for a while, but it was good enough skiing for a very enjoyable for a long weekend in Bansko. Bansko can suffer some horrendous gondola queues at holiday times, but these can be avoided by getting a taxi from town up to the "bottom left on the piste plan" of the lift infrastructure, or by going to Borovets instead.
apres ski food and drink is incredible value for money

I wouldn't be too hard on the French, their politicians yes, but not your average Pierre or Fluer in the street.
Not sure why the UK has been singled out in this instance, but I am sure our own populist politicians have equally hacked off the French in many ways.

@twoodwar, French ski resorts have been getting more and more expensive so for me, unless it's an incredible deal, I'm looking first and foremost at Austria and Andorra.
Today's news will sour France for a lot of people I fear

It simply hasn't - but it's an omicron hotbed. The Continent is still fighting off delta and tries to slow down new imports. Omicron *will* become prevalent in France anyway, but they'd like to avoid this happening in the middle of an already difficult situation.

Bulgaria? Just had this from banskoblog.com saying the snow looks good:
"And those of you who have booked for France will have read that non-essential travel is banned there, for UK residents. So far all is fein [sic] for most people to travel to Bulgaria but you'll find the top four reasons why you may not want to book your ski trip this season. There's a lot to talk about today."
with testing on site " I am expecting at least one more testing place in the vicinity of the gondola lift card park. Rapid Flow tests are around 10 lv (about €5)."
But fair play he includes things to be wary of with Bulgaria
"4 Reasons to avoid Bansko this season
If your pre departure test from Bulgaria back to your country is positive, you will be stuck in quarantine for 14 days, at your own expense
Travel rules change so that it is impossible to leave home for Bansko; like we' have just seen for France.
Bansko resort could close lifts due to covid
Bulgarian health care is below expected standard
Whilst I am not an expert, and who want to read about fear porn and corona but I do feel that Bansko may not be for all! And certainly not if you expect others around you to confirm to distancing and mask wearing regulations. "
I have no affilitation at all with this resort or this provider.

Screw that, go somewhere warm! I just got back last weekend from Sri Lanka. 28°C water, super cheap, delicious food, easy travel (per test + vaccination). They really need tourists/tourist money right now too.
Key is to have the time off but book actual travel at the very last minute depending where is possible there and then.

Spain would have to be a logical option. They are far more tourist friendly/reliant than the French, so tend to be less draconian with such measures. With the snow as it is at present just another reason to go, and then add in the fact it's generally a lot cheaper than France. Resorts in the Pyrenees are reachable via Barcelona/Madrid/Bilbao giving plenty of flight options, and even getting a ferry to Santander wouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility. For those looking more off the beaten track there are also resorts like San Isidro near Oviedo, or even Alto Campoo, which while being no way large ski areas there are amongst some of the most beautiful wilderness in Spain (assuming your skiing is good enough to outrun the wolves and bears ).

@Gilberts Fridge, I suspect it may have something to do with the very high covid rates in the UK, lower vaccination rates and lesser measures in place to prevent the spread, but then again other countries, such as Czechia have equally high rates as the UK.

@Gilberts Fridge, I always thought America was the biggest Island Nation when it came to a lack of understanding of the world. But since returning to the UK I have been very surprised at the anti EU rhetoric in the media, close friends and obviously the right wing politicians. We make it very easy to be singled out by other countries as not been on-board.
I have lived and worked all over the world and I have to say we the English are not as popular as we may think. Once you learn the local language you realise what is actually is been said and the tone of the comments. (Please note I did not say British).

AH well.
Now to swap the winter tyres off and put the general purpose ones back on the car, put the brand new ski boots and ski trousers into storage, delay repairing the ski gloves (again), start looking at refunds for the money spent on ski passes, look for repurposing pre departure covid test kits and start looking at the routes to Weardale. Hang on - have they got electicity there yet?
BTW I agree with @David B,

I fear other countries may follow France’s example. I now have serious doubts that the PreBB and BB will happen. If they don’t, I’ll use the money I’d set aside for them to buy a new camera tripod and maybe a star tracker. Every cloud.
