Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

France returns to lockdown

I think this thread has drifted sufficiently now, it's been split to:

Covid-19 vaccines, statistics, conspiracy theories and more on "The Piste"

A good place for all the numbers and theories specialists, if we can keep this thread relevant to France's lockdown, rules and updates, it'll be really useful for people living in France and looking to visit, cheers Very Happy

@KenX, @Claude B, good stuff!

From the Connexion
https://www.connexionfrance.com/French-news/Which-areas-of-France-could-go-into-lockdown-next-and-why

Which departments might be next?
The following departments are not in confinement but have a rate of incidence over or close to 250:

Bouches-du-Rhône, Hautes-Alpes, Var (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur), Gard (Occitanie), Aube, Moselle (Grand Est), Haute-Savoie, Rhône (Auvergne Rhône-Alpes), Doubs, Nièvre, Yonne (Bourgogne Franche-Comté), Eure-et-Loir (Centre Val-de-Loire), and Orne (Normandy).

PACA and Occitanie
The Alpes-Maritimes department in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is one of the 16 already subject to the new stricter measures - now other departments in the region may follow suit.

The incidence rate is over 250 in Var (348) Bouches-du-Rhône (334) and close to the threshold in Hautes-Alpes (248).

The rate of occupation in intensive care is also at or over 100% in all three departments.

In neighbouring Gard, Occitanie, the incidence rate is 295 and occupation in intensive care is at 102%.

Grand Est and Auvergne Rhône-Alpes
In the Grand Est region, cases are soaring in the department of Aube, with the incidence rate reaching 441 – the highest rate for any department that is not yet subject to the new, stricter rules.

Hospital occupation is also high in the department at 125%. In the same region, Moselle has an incidence rate of 291 and occupation in hospitals is at 114%.

In Rhône and Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, hospital occupation is at 97%, but the rate of incidence is well over 250 in both departments, at 375 in Rhône and 293 in Haute-Savoie.

Though I see Isere on the interactive map is also above the threshold?

The package operators' cries of "there's just so much demand, book now!" are going to look odder and odder in the next month. Surely your less regular or less keen skiier will look at the news from France and think "I'll hold off, I think".

Hopefully all of these businesses can salvage a summer season. Easter looks like it won't happen.

The media here in Germany believes that Germany is on the point of declaring France to be a "high risk area / red zone". If true (and it seems to be) it will likely influence the UK and it will also mean that crossing into Germany from France will become much more difficult even for truck drivers etc. Anyone who wants to travel needs to do so very quickly.

@Claude B, we could well go the same way in the Hautes Alpes as well.

We were out this week, admittedly on a Wednesday so kids off school etc and so many people had parked up (50+cars) where usually I'd expect to see 5+ but think that's more to do with so many XC areas closed, but pretty well all locals and not loads of large groups that you saw in the holidays etc

Also seems to be a lot of circa 55+ yrs people out and about making the most of the outdoors driving non-local plates.

But certainly not as crazy as the holidays and the Parisians have not shown up nor those from Alpes Maritimes.

Snow conditions are now more like end of April than end of March, certainly a bizarre season.

@Weathercam, Good stuff you're in the french system effective the date it was issued. I'm going to do a Castorama and food shop early next week while I can. Then Thursday I've a rdv at the prefecture for fingerprints, etc for my CdS.

Not very busy here tbh. Although a mate told me that someone from the Tourist Office told him that one February week they weren't far down on normal numbers. Didn't seem that busy but suspect that was just SC, most of the hotels are closed.

What’s the latest on travel . . . . We need to travel to France to agree and give the OK to some urgent repairs / renovation over next month or so. You can travel from the UK for renting / selling etc but other reasons such as repairs isn’t so clear. I think you can travel within the UK to buy good and services (so presumably this could be to buy repair services to a second home). This is most definitely not a holiday under a disguise.

Anybody got a view / seen the rules / had practical experience ?

Same down here, was in line Monday to local shopping "mall" where they'd commandeered a closed Gap store as dedicated walk through centre. Looked like it was running at about 45 an hour ish.
Daughter at school tested 3 times a week, local positives dropping in spite of ramp up in testing numbers. All seems petty effective.

100,000 for a village hall / GP surgery setup is hugely impressive. That’s roughly 1K per day, seven days a week since the vaccines were approved. Locally, nine GP surgeries are running a grandstand at the local racecourse as a vaccine centre. We have plenty of parking and a big building but 1500 per day is absolute maximum and vaccine supplies have meant it can only run about 2-3 days per week. If you’d said 10,000 I’d still be quite impressed.

If you put scientists in charge they would lock every single person in their house, politicians have to balance lots of needs and issues, I only have a problem when they make decisions for their own political purposes.

Thinking about it it must have been across the PCN as a whole because the throughput doesn't make sense. Still over 5 or 6 centres that's still an impressive number each.

Countries that put science front and centre include:

Taiwan - 1,012 cases & 10 deaths.
New Zealand - 2,479 cases & 26 deaths.
Vietnam - 2,579 cases & 35 deaths.
Japan - 463,000 cases & 8,956 deaths.

Countries who ignored the science:
United States - 30,200,000 cases & 548,000 deaths.
United Kingdom - 4,320,000 cases & 126,000 deaths.

As the infamous tweet goes:

"You can't compare Great Britain and New Zealand, it's really unfair, there are so many variables that are completely different. For example, their leader is very good and listened to science whereas ours is properly $h1t and listened to Steve Bannon and Dominic Cummings."

Yes youre right you cant compare the UK and NZ
uk population density 275 per km nz 18
uk population 66 million nz 5 million
uk median age 40.5 nz 37.6
uk largest city 11 million nz 130 THOUSAND
uk travel numbers 141 million in 2018 nz 3.8 million, heathrow handles four times the total of NZ on its own
UK fat and unfit NZ not as fat or unfit
UK large Bame population NZ far lower and many of those are indigenous

All of those have a huge affect on case spread and or death rates also the uk has a death rate of 1 in 34 NZ 1 in 95 so are you saying the NHS is crap compared to the NZ health system ? or perhaps we record deaths in a different way. Have we made mistakes yes of course in hindsight I expect some things would have been done differently but then I could win the lottery everyweek if I knew the numbers beforehand

alti - dude wrote:

@alti - dude Don't forget about how travel insurance exclusions will often supersede immigration and lockdown rules. For example, although travel to Switzerland may soon be allowed for UK owners of résidence secondaires, the Foreign Office is still explicitly advising against 'all but essential travel'. And that status effectively excludes my going there because I can't get travel insurance to cover me (I'm over-65). So I may be able to legally get there and/or legally enter, but I won't have travel insurance cover. And yes, 'essential' will soon include travel to buy/sell/view a holiday home, but do you know that your insurer will accept that as within scope?

Basically, it's a long-winded way of saying you really do need to get an explicit OK from your travel insurer that you are covered to go to any foreign destination. And your motor insurer if you're self-driving. Apologies if you know this already, but it's easy to forget in all the complexities of interpreting the various regulations and official pronouncements. And yes, GHIC will cover a lot of the medical expenses (in the EU27, but not CH), but not the cost of accommodation to recuperate, emergency repatriation, someone coming out to help you, etc.

And if you do go, be on the lookout for the French equivalent of 5G Mast destruction where ATMs are being targeted by elite Black Ops squads of ex-Foreign-Legion saboteurs.
