...and by the end of it, you've caught a lift ten minutes after closing time, almost headed off in the wrong direction with zero opportunity for contingency, acquired a head injury, lost a contact lens,, bust another pair of goggles, boot packed up a closed piste to gain some height, found said contact lens in the back of your eye, skied out on a footpath, almost got left at the wrong train station, and explained to your partner why you have a black eye but still picked up his skis.
Blowout fracture (eye socket), they said. Surgery on Monday. No altitude for four weeks. At least the snow's not that good.

@PeakyB, Cheers. I've had better weeks.
Oh, and I forgot the bit where I spent 5 mins with a screwdriver adjusting his bindings

I'd just like to point out that most of the 5minutes, I was saying, "That'll be fine" but she was channelling Spyderjon or something... and @Scarlet had the map.

@DB, We were skiing. I don't usually drink till I'm off the hill and this was no exception. No après at all that day, as I didn't feel too good after hitting my head and didn't think a beer was likely to improve matters. And it was already dark and I still had to get a train home from Wörgl.

@admin, Yeah, but you insisted on fiddling with the toe end which left the FP way off. On the plus side, I'd probably have been heli-ing you out with a broken face after you'd pre-released at mach schnell, thus leaving mine intact

This brings back memories of an Off Piste day at the 2018 PSB when Admin was having a lot of trouble staying upright, until he realised that your DIN setting wasn't meant to be the total of the four different places you could set a din. From memory his bindings were set to 1, 3, 2 and 4.

Sounds like utter chaos! Who is next on the hit list?
I heard a rumour that Saalbach might be on the list? Pretty much impossible to get lost there and quite a lot of skiing can be done in the dark. Sadly @Tatmanstours is resting at present otherwise I would have a small wager on the scores being level after a soiree......

I was only kidding for some reason I posted a winky smiley but it didn‘t show. Good luck with the op, hope you have a full recovery.
Having once skied with Admin but without picking up an injury I’m feeling like I dodged a bullet now. Is he still double pole planting like a boss?

@Timberwolf, Yes, though on this occasion we just skied purposefully towards the lift, clocked the time above, got waved through and thanked them profusely.
@DB, I figured it was in jest, but some skiers around here don't exactly hold back on the alcohol and I didn't want the record spinning off in that direction It was a very simple fall on a steep red section of a completely empty but quite hard-packed piste. Not going fast enough to slide at all, just stopped dead like hitting a wall. Didn't lose consciousness, but didn't really know what was going on for a while. Didn't help that I couldn't see on one side. Can't say I was taking much notice of his pole planting. He was generally quite far away anyway.

@adithorp, Tim had given @admin some directions and drawn some lines on the piste map while I was in the loo. I asked him if he had been paying attention “yes... ...no...” so Tim gave the map to me. The problem was more that I'd never been to the area before so didn't have a clue beyond the signage, which luckily I'd thought to check before we headed more than 100m the wrong way. @admin then hiked back up a bit to the lift to confirm my directions with the liftie, who's main tip was to keep high. It all went wrong about 30 sec later and then I had to blindly find my way down in vaguely the right direction. It's my left side so must've missed a high left turn somewhere along the way. I'm not really sure, I don't remember much, but FatMap saved the day when we found the footpath, confirming that it went in the right direction.
@k, Thanks, might do that, though I've already signed my life away
@midgetbiker, Not a fence, as there weren't any, but tbh I don't really know. It looked smooth enough, no death cookies, right at the edge coz piste bashers were on the move, definitely not fast (I was on Directors wishing I had piste skis, but taking it pretty easy because of that) and I was only about two turns in and we'd already come off the last lift we needed, so as long as navigation was good, we just had to get down to the van with no critical time requirement. I remember taking a very similar fall in Ischgl on a hard piste a few years ago, but smacked my head more centrally above the nose where I think the skull is a bit tougher. Bust those goggles too

To be fair this is not necessarily normal advice, @k being the substance that goes up to 11 on the Mohs Scale.
|
|
|
|
|
|
@Dave of the Marmottes, The Austrian scale doesn't go up to 11. That would be outside the rules, and even merely contemplating such things does not compute.

Wurtzite boron nitride is what you need for an 11. Or as it's known in Sarf London, well 'ard.

Bit of extra padding on the (new) goggles, access to very good drugs/red wine and I was fine!

@Scarlet, hope the surgery on the eye socket fracture goes well.
I hope @FatGeorge fared better skiing with @admin today. Only so much patching up you can do with gaffer tape, nylon cord, elastic bands and Velcro strips.
We await a bulletin.

3,2,1, back in the room. Never had a general before. That was weird.
Surgeon seems happy. Apparently there were 4 fragments and some trapped tissue, so she’s picked them up and secured with the dissolvable gauze, which should make a strong repair. I asked if they did this op regularly, and she described it as their best seller!
For anyone stopping over in Innsbruck hospital, the level of patient care is very high, everyone is lovely, it’s a bilingual place, but the food is still terrible. Luckily there’s a Spar downstairs (Also open Sundays, which is worth knowing as that makes it the only second supermarket in the city that is. In the centre of the complex, but easily accessible on foot.)

@holidayloverxx, with you there! I was really anxious about it beforehand because I've never had an op before, but now it's done, I feel like a new person, albeit one that's not allowed out.
@mooney058, I sent the other one a list of things to bring including stuff I forgot like lip balm (really hot and dry here), and he turned up with a chicken curry sandwich, a coissant, enough cake for 4, tiramisu, a massive fruit salad, 4 mars bars and a bar of chocolate! Also my laptop and mobile desk setup I got the window end in a ward of three, which is next to a table. This will be my office and non-hospital food feasting space until they kick me out. I am doing my best to look as healthy as possible

@mooney058, I could probably get one of those tiny bivvy ones in, though I think it would be considered 'in the way'. My down mat would certainly be comfier than the bed, though all the needles would be a risk.
