Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nice sharp edges

A sneaky pre-Christmas trip hasn’t gone as planned, despite the snow gods providing a top-up as we arrived in Söll. Day one (Thursday) was fun with maybe 10cm of fresh but slightly heavy snow and a limited area to ski until the majority open this weekend.

4pm saw me catch an edge in the heavy stuff, and pop out of my skis. Unfortunately I landed on one of them, which happened to be on its side, and cut a nice slot in my salopettes just below the knee. I was busy cursing this as I stood up when the blood appeared on the top of my boot, and a piece of the salopette insulation fell out onto the snow. As this was bright red, the signs were not good.

I could stand up, and had no real pain, so I decided to ski down to the nearest lift with my ski buddy to get a plaster and maybe a bandage to hold it in place. I made it down without drama, walked into the control room, and asked for help. The lift operator almost passed out when she peered through the hole and saw what was waiting. First aiders were called and arrived in about 2 minutes. They cut me out of my salopettes to get a better look, then explained that this needed a hospital. A dressing was applied and I was packed into the gondola to download.

A second medic was waiting at the midstation, and joined me to improve the dressing and check me over. At the bottom, an ambulance was waiting for me and with a quick flash of my EHIC card they had my details and we were off.

Kufstein hospital had two doctors and a nurse waiting for me. They removed my boots and socks, cleaned up the wound, and sent me for an X-ray to check whether the bone was damaged. Arrival to X-ray took about 5 minutes, then I was wheeled into the next room where the doctors checked the X-ray and announced that the bone was ok but I needed to be operated on to close the wound. I asked when that could be done, to be told it was about to start.

With a local anaesthetic they tidied up the wound and stitched me up, then strapped it up and sent me to a ward overnight. Total time from injury to ward was about 90 minutes - very impressive.

For those of a nervous disposition, my first post-op photo will follow in a spoiler wrapper. Open at your peril. I don’t think the doc does embroidery...

I bought a season pass for this season, as I also have trips planned for early January and mid February. Now the focus is on being able to ski in January, as this short trip is now blown out. I travel home on Monday as planned, as walking wounded.

The moral of this tale is that sharp edges are great for skiing, but not so good to fall on. I’ll try to avoid it in future... rolling eyes

@ousekjarr, Now that's going to be a proper scar - very jealous.

I hope the whole incident wasn't inspired by Skiing With Demons 3 !

You read about a skiing laceration, then sustain one yourself - spooky.

Hope you recover is swift.

PS - are you a bear ?

@ousekjarr, I had a friend following me down a green path back to Verbier and I stopped when I heard him scream out in pain. I walked back up and he’d slipped off the side of path and had skied into a tree but at very slow speed and fallen backwards onto his back. I looked down at his salopettes and one ski had come off and cut through his salopettes at the knee. I opened up his salopettes and his knee had a similar neat cut and it was gaping open. There was surprisingly little blood but it was obviously very painful and there was no way he could ski down, so help was summoned and a helicopter arrived, even though we were very near the town. That was the end of his skiing for the week. I can still see the wound quite vividly. Shocked

@geepee, I had the benefit of not seeing it until I’d managed to ski to the first aid point. If I’d seen it before, it would have been a skidoo collection - as it was they took me up to the download point on a skidoo anyway, so I enjoyed the ride

Talking about efficiency, when I broke my arm in Austria last March, I was recovered from the mountain and taken to a car park, where an ambulance was waiting for me and straight to hospital. EHIC was all they wanted to see and I was X-rayed, strapped up and sent on my way in less than an hour.

A bit off topic, I had a patient come in with the most beautiful facial sutures I've ever seen. Odd that they were white and seemed non absorbable. Amazing job though. 7 days after injury.

Long story short. His wife was a seamstress Smile

Agree that looks messy but if you make it look neat it swells and goes wrong, I think it's about right as well.

@ousekjarr, Stihl Hiflex chain saw trousers should do the job perfectly:

Kevlar threads in a Schoeller softshell fabric.

Be quick - they are no longer manufactured.

@altis, thanks but I think the mechanics of the cut are different, plus one accident in 20 years of skiing for 2-3 weeks per season doesn’t really justify special equipment. If it does, then https://learning.battleofbannockburn.com/battlepedia/armour/mail-chausses/ is more my style Happy

@always29, done 2 days previously at the Cambridge Ski Exchange - always a quality service Happy

I managed to drive to Kitzbühel today to do the tourist thing, which was nice. A small Christmas market was running, and the town was worth a look. I had lunch on the mountain yesterday, but had failed to appreciate that the distance between the the gondola and the alm is 10 seconds on skis, but a 10 minute walk down a blue piste on foot, with a 15 minute climb back up... two days after the accident, I clocked 10750 steps for the day, half of that on piste wink

Ten days on from my return home, and I’m now half way through a course of antibiotics as the wound showed signs of infection when checked on Monday. Still bandaged and leaky, but looking better and the swelling below the cut has now gone down.

Bruises are interesting - one large one down the front of my leg, and a strange horizontal one from my heel around the side of my foot, a long way from the impact. Eight days until I go back to Austria - I think I’m likely to be OK for simple skiing, but anything challenging is looking doubtful. A lot will depend on how day one feels, and how the wound progresses this week.

Few years ago I was skied into and fealt something 'go' in my hand. One of our group was a surgeon and got me to take my glove off. After much prodding of my thumb he declared "that doesn't look good". I skied down to the medical centre where the Doctor looked at the X-ray and said with a fine French accent "this does not look good". Eight days later I'm in hospital in Wales where the consultant takes a brief look at the latest x-ray and says..... "That doesn't look good".
Years of medical training obviously does little for the vocabulary.
