Earlier than usual, but it seems appropriate to kick off this year's new thread with this piece of news:
"From the coming 2019/20 season all lift tickets in Saalbach will be issued as "Ski Alpin Cards", meaning that they will be valid in Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm, Leogang, Fieberbrunn, Zell am See and Kaprun. Pre-sale season tickets will be €590 and the season will officially start on 29th November!"
Having said that, the "Ski Alpin Card" is strictly speaking the name they give to the season ticket, which covers the period 12th October - 3rd May. I assume therefore that the normal lift tickets will cover the whole expanded area, as above, but will be available for purchase as from 29th November.
It's a little disappointing to note that the Easter bonus, which has traditionally enabled children up to the age of 15 to obtain free lift tickets after the middle of March, provided that a parent is buying a ticket for at least 4 days, is now restricted to the period 4th - 13th April. However children up to age 15 (born in 2004 or later) get half-price tickets all season, and children born in 2001-2003 get a 25% discount.
If anyone's in need of information about Saalbach, I am happy to email them my comprehensive guide, which should answer most questions. Also, if looking for accommodation, I may be able to help, as I have quite a few contacts amongst the British community who have apartments or rooms to let in and around Saalbach.
Quite a significant season, as the ski area will increase from 270km to over 400km with the new link to Zell am See/Kaprun. Also the Zwoelferkogelbahn is being completely renewed for the coming season. I will be there for a couple of months in the summer, so it will be interesting to see what progress has been made and catch up with any other news.

@kb36, Yes, it’s a 6 minute uphill walk (allegedly) along the road from us. I've tried to look at its website, but for some reason my phone is refusing to load it. Also on booking.com it’s coming up as fully booked for every week I’ve tried.

A surprising amount of excitement is being generated by the announcement that Austria has finally decided to ban smoking in bars and restaurants from November this year. I didn’t realise that people felt so strongly - I confess that I’d become used to it, except when the fug has been so bad that it’s made my eyes sting and driven me out, which was a rare occurrence last season.
I know that some of our bar-owning friends are worried about possible (likely) complaints about noisy huddles of smokers late at night, disturbing the sleep of hotel dwellers. All the more reason for choosing one’s hotel carefully.
One thing that always irritates me is the fag ends strewn around where smokers congegrate. For many it seems that disposing of butts considerately is too much trouble.

@tatmanstours, it became the norm everywhere else, so most people are now used to clean smells/air more or less. You'll see that most people will be gradually happy with the new situation, except heavy smokers who seldom have consideration for the others
|
|
|
|
|
|
@tatmanstours, I am a non smoker and was very happy when the ban finally arrived in Bavaria. However I thought ban or no ban the situation was much improved in Austria already. Yes there were (are until November) still small smoky bars (the place at St Anton railway station comes to mind) but I found anywhere serving food or trying to attract a wider clientele had already exiled the smokers to the terrace outside or to some poky back room. I am sure there will still be complaints about the number of folk smoking on the apres ski spots terraces' but not sure much anyone can do about that (or the piles of cigarette butts.....)

That is great news! It was the only downside to an afternoon of cracking apres in Austria. It does push the problem outside but luckily in ski resorts it’s often too cold to hang around outside for long!

@tatmanstours, We are thinking about Saalbach next year - have already booked flights into Salzburg 22 Feb '20 for a week. 3 adults (my wife, sister and myself) and 2 kids (9 and 7). You mention in your 20 May post that you may be able to help on accommodation. Can you let me know of any apartments/rooms/contacts you may have? Also your Saalbach guide sounds v handy! Really appreciate any assistance. R

Hi Tatmantours,
I’m looking at Saalbach for a trip next March. We mostly do four night trips but this time a few of us might go for the whole week.
Is it easy enough to get accommodation for four nights?

@tatmanstours, with you about the fag ends, I do ask people on the mountain to pick up their dog ends and put it in the nearest ashtray. I noticed at the end of last winter that the ticket office had pouches for free that you can use but didn't get round to asking for any, I now have.
I will be carrying a few spares on the mountain this winter and give one to anyone who drops their dog end on the snow

|
@maddness, Depending on numbers, my advice would be to rent an apartment for a week, on the basis that some will stay for four nights and others for the whole week. Easier, and probably no more expensive than trying to find accommodation for a short trip. We have availability in March if it's of any help. P.M. me if so.

Anyone holidaying in Saalbach this summer may like to know that there will be a street party with entertainment, stalls and live music/DJs every Wednesday from 6.00pm (subject to fine weather) outside the Crazy Deer bar and Del Rossi restaurant.
The Hecherhuette is also doing its famous "all you can eat" barbecue every Thursday evening from 6.00pm, and sometimes on other evenings too. Phone up to book in advance (and mention my name, in case it earns me a drink). You can drive up there from the centre of Viehhofen - highly recommended! Gluttons will be particularly appreciative of the quantity and quality of food available, including fillet steak. After the meal they do apres-ski songs and dancing on the terrace, which is always a laugh.

I tend to use Holiday Autos for 1-2 hires per year, though with my own Excess Insurance. They're just a broker, but they are usually cheaper than others and just as good. Plus I get 8% cashback through a work discount scheme

Excellent advice! Holiday Autos have always given me great prices, and don't seem to deal with any of the more cowboy car hire companies. And your tip about using your own Excess Insurance is another great money-saver. 8% is a great cashback deal. For those of you who don't have such a good work discount scheme, www.topcashback.co.uk gives you 6.3%.

almost august so thoughts turning to next season, this last few years weve driven to saalbach in march7-10 days and had a short break elswhere by air in jan . This year for reasons of family grand kids etc we may have to reverse things or rather get organised for jan sooner dont particularly want to drive in jan and as yet eurowings who we have used in the past into salzburg arnt showing any ex uk flights mid jan, anyone know if they are likely to. Failing that it will have to be ryan air but the times arnt great or into munich lufthansa which is a tad far on public transportnot keen on hiring car to sit in a garage for a week . There is or was a bus direct from salzburg airport but cant seem to find it although train is fine , we would probably be going 5/6 nights either sat out or sat back .accomodation we are flexible either hotel or self catering although i prefer hotel or at least b/b and there seems to be a reasonable choice atm hotel but not s/c . any thougths anyone cheers thanks in advance

@ski for fun, use https://www.skyscanner.net to find flights into Salzburg or Munich, then if you want to avoid hiring a car the best option is probably either https://www.holiday-shuttle.at/en/saalbach-hinterglemm/shuttle-service or the Postbus, or a private taxi transfer if there are more than 2 of you.
Train from Munich to Zell is relatively simple if you time it right and have no awkward luggage - 3:10 in total with a bus to Munchen Ost, inter city train to Worgl, and then a REX regional train to Zell. From there you'd need the bus or a taxi into Saalbach.
Personally I prefer to hire a car at €180 for the week and have it available to do day trips, go shopping if we're self-catering, and get us door to door in each direction. For 3 people or more, it will be cheaper than almost any other option, and is typically much faster than the train or bus.
Accommodation is easy if you prefer hotels - https://www.saalbach.com/saalbach-booking/MasterReq?AR=1&FL=100&LG=1&RA=2&AM=1&MB=0 which will also give you self-catering, but not all of them have online availability calendars and you may have to contact them directly to see what's available. At this stage of the year, that could be limited depending on when in January you want to go.

@ski for fun, may not be any use to your arrival or dates but I have a return Salzburg to Saalbach transfer booked to suit the easyJet Bristol flights on 11th arrival and 18th Jan return. Two, possibly three spaces on that as we are only a group of 4 at moment and think max group size is 8. When I was looking I didn't find the transfer cost outrageous, about 150 euros each way. For accommodation outside a full week I always try the local search facility at www.saalbach.com/en first

A hire car is often the cheapest way if you can park it somewhere for free.... It also allows you to try out some of the other ski areas nearby if you get the superski pass.

@ski for fun, We could accommodate you during the week 4-11 January. You’d have to make your own breakfast though (which in my case amounts to pouring some muesli and milk into a bowl and pealing a banana).

thanks for your replies folks its starting to look as if we may have to try to organise things this side so we could do a week and just tour company it as the cost differential isnt that great either way esp with the 2for 1 liftpass tui offer. 5/6 nights would work best in jan , we are back out in march for longer. Thanks for your offer tatman if you recall my sil and daughter stayed in your flat a couple of years ago and it was ideal for them and us if s/c but unfortunately the dates dont suit for us this time although will pass on your details to another family member tommorrow who is looking

Hi all. I'm visiting Saalbach from 21. to 28. of march next year, staying at the Saalbacher Hof. I have read this thread and last years thread, sounds like a great place.
A few noob questions:
1: Is there a blue run from the shattberg x-press middle station to the bottom? On google maps there is a blue run called skiweg Shattberg x-press, but on the map, that area is closed?
2: How much can the holiday shuttle be expected to be late on a Saturday in march? My plane home is at 21.40, so should I choose the bus at 15.30 or 18.00 from Saalbach?
3: Are there public showers anywhere i Saalbach, so I can take a shower after the last day of skiing?

@tatmanstours, Hi, me and the boss lady are looking at Saalbach for Christmas. Preferably flying out on Dec 21 or 22 for a week (or so) and looking for a small catered chalet or small hotel where folk are likely to mix rather than the bigger places where socialising seems to be harder.
Any advice, pointers and a copy of your guide greatfully received.
Many thanks,
Sandy

No, there isn’t - at least we’ve never discovered it.
Quote: |
2: How much can the holiday shuttle be expected to be late on a Saturday in march? My plane home is at 21.40, so should I choose the bus at 15.30 or 18.00 from Saalbach?
|
The shuttle cost 44 euros per single trip, and 84 euros for the round trip last season, and I’m not aware of any price increase. For a group of at least three people it makes more sense to book a private taxi for 150 euros each way.
The journey takes about 1hour 15 minutes, so even on a Saturday (when the roads tend to be busier), I would expect the 18.00 shuttle to get you to the airport in time for a 21.40 flight.

3: Are there public showers anywhere i Saalbach, so I can take a shower after the last day of skiing?

No, unless you pay to go into one of the hotel wellness suites. The Hotel Kendler and the Hotel Alpin Resort may be your best bet.
