Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Benefit of thin skis?

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I learned to ski on Volkl supersport 5 stars, 68 underfoot, heavy, stiff and fast
Now my thinnest skis are 89 underfoot Whitedot Ones and used for mainly piste days
I'm wandering what a thin heavy piste ski with metal etc would feel like now, I would have to find and fit some DIN sole blocks (a faff) to hire some, or QK my Marker Tour bindings onto some GS skis, if these actually exist in the flat? Would it be worth the hassle and cost or should I just enjoy the Ones?

Would a touring binding be suitable for a hard charging GS ski? Genuine question as I'm not clever enough to understand bindings properly.

I still ski Atomic Beta Ride 11.20 (107 - 70 - 98 )....and like them.

They are fast edge to edge, are easy to skid, with a tail of 98mm...but a little harder to engage the tip (only 107mm) for carving. I like the full camber On Piste, but they are too narrow to make Off Piste easier.

@SnoodlesMcFlude, I've some Beasts on a pair of Movement Le Fers. Not mega hard charging, but very turny and decent in bumps.

I'm not the best test pilot around, but I can't tell the difference between them and my old Look 14's.

@On the rocks, I’d stick with the Ones. I don’t own them, but have skied them quite a lot, and the reason I don’t own them is that they feel almost identical to my Atomics (metal, 84, all mountain) which are my narrowest ski. For a non-piste ski, they perform really well, so you may be disappointed that you don’t get much more out of a specialist.

@On the rocks, performance sidewall construction piste haven't really changed in thickness at all. Your 5 stars were a cap construction with a profiled top sheet with a rail binding which makes them look pretty meaty compared to a traditional sidewall construction ski.

You'd have no issues whatsoever getting a flat piste ski and QK'ing them for your Tours - in fact the frame system on the Tours give you the stack height that you get if you mounted an alpine binding on a race plate so it'd be a good thing. And at your stats the Tours will have no problem handling the load etc.

I agree with Scarlet re the performance of the One's.

@Scarlet, yep, even a mediocre skier like me was surprised at how well the Ones performed on a hard piste...shame I can't get past the look of them though.

It really depends on what aspect of skiing floats your boat, I'm an obsessive carver and anything with a turn radius of more than 14m is just not worth bothering with on piste for me. I love the sensation of total edge grip of the skis and getting them almost perpendicular to the snow with my hip just a few cm from the snow with a g force that almost buckles my legs. I started another slightly controversial post after a few beers waiting for the train in BSM after trying some Rossi Sky7 hds and found them utterly horrible on piste after my Head supershape iRallys 131 -76 -109 with a radius of 13.6m. The sky 7s were 96 underfoot and 18m radius. With the kind of pressure that I put on the edges, I find anything greater than 80mm starts becoming very uncomfortable on the side of my legs.
I have a two week, predominantly offpiste trip in March so, whilst my 76mm iRallys are easy and manageable in almost all offpiste conditions, I've been looking into wider skis that might be more fun but those that I have tried have been very disappointing on piste.

@Scarlet, thanks that's reassuring. I will get around to finding some DIN soles for my Tecnica Cochise Pro Lights sometime, and just try hiring a top end GS ski for a really icy day to see what they feel like

A top end GS ski probably won't feel that much different to your ones, try something completely different.
Head iTitans or Rossii hero short turns.
At the Oktobertest I specifically was looking at wider skis but I had a go on the Titans and they blew everything else into the weeds that day, don't wait for an icy day, on groomed fresh snow, something like the Titans will put a smile on any good skier.

@tangowaggon, with you here regards turny on piste skis.

I'm more into short and turny on piste and shorter turny ('cus I'm a pussy) off piste.

I was skiing my Head Supershape I SPEED which are a 68mm underfoot in finland POW (ok so 18 inches of fluffy finish off piste isn't really POW) but they did a cracking job Happy

Having hated the wd preachers I tested at oktobertest., they were 189s and felt like barn doors on my feet even though I'm 185cm and 90kg. Just looking at the wd website, the 189s have a 19m radius but the 169s are a 14m radius which to me is a completely different ski. I've noticed that most skis radius gets bigger as they get longer, the manufacturers keeping the tail, middle and tip widths the same.

I am a big old guy and love hooning down wide pistes making GS turns. My 200cm Atomic Beta Rides do the job just fine.

My knees don't last a run off piste. It is strictly good viz groomer zooming for me nowadays.

Aren't you stating the obvious here ginge?? Toofy Grin Toofy Grin

I had the Preachers in a 179, I actually quite liked them on and offpiste, more so than the R108 carbons, and in crud they were cracking. There was just something about both that didn't totally click with me in the way that my various heads do and my FX95HPs - I guess I just like em short and stiff oooo Sir!!

I have come to the conclusion that this is because actually, despite appearances, you are a delicate gentle soul and I misjudged you.

I shouldn't have recommended you a ski that's designed for hooligans like me!
