It is really easy to do day trips from Niseko.
There is a day-trip bus every day to Rusutsu, and three/or four times a week to Kiroro.
Just ask in any of the tourist office places.
Here's a strange thing...the best chips (ie fried potatoes) I have ever had, anywhere, were in the big mountain restaurant in Rusutsu (Hokkaido is the potato growing area of Japan). I didn't expect that!

I can believe that. If you take the bus back to Sapporo from Niseko there is a rest stop at a potato, sorry jagaimo, restaurant that sells them every which way and they are delicious.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

@Minion1980, i'm booked on the same tour with BD Tours as @kat.ryb, but the January version. Plus a couple of days of free-skiing either side. I will report back on my experiences in late January when I return.
Thanks! I hope you have a great time I look forward to hearing about it

Yes, I'll be eagerly awaiting your trip report
@Custard the Rabbit I fly into Sapporo on 17 Feb and back out on 27 Feb - not sure there will be much opportunity to met up with people because the BD tour moves about to different locations. I'm not sure exactly when and where I will be.
@Minion1980, I'll PM you

@Mike Pow, Thanks for the updates on the ground. Kiroro seems to quite often get snow down to the resort base while it's raining in Niseko and elsewhere. Is this just due to higher altitude or some other localised effect?

My pleasure.
Altitude is the main factor.
Base in the Niseko Resort Area is between 250-300 m, base at Kiroro is 568 m.

Coming back over ?
Say hi
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
snowHeads are a friendly bunch.
How are conditions currently looking on Honshu, particularly around Hakuba, Nozawa and Myoko?
And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Struggling. If you're headed over in the next 7 days then keep on going to Hokkaido.
So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Gloriously sunny day with smiles for miles on the groomers
Good stuff @Mike Pow, my Japan trip isn't until 26th Jan. I can divert to Hokkaido should the conditions not be great around Nagano/Niigata. If I was to use Niseko as a base, how easy is it to do day trips to say Rusutsu, Furano and Ashahidake?

Daily buses to Niseko Moiwa, Rusutsu and Kiroro from Niseko Hirafu.
Furano and Asahidake are at least 5hrs drive from Niseko Hirafu.
If you wanted to ski those you'd base yourself in Furano. Kamui, Tomamu and Sahoro also in the area.
Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I'm off to Niseko end of Jan and taking a few customers with me. Can anyone give me a few tips about what to expect there, I don't know what I'm asking cause i don't know how different/same it is to Europe/USA skiing.
DO we need a guide? Any tips greatly received for prior planing.
Are the rental Ski's good? Going to take boots only can't be troubled to take my K2 Apache raptors all the way but hope to hire some wide ski's there.
