Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Iceland Skiing??

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Hi all
We are looking into a skiing/winter holiday but instead of a week's skiing, we want to go somewhere that offers loads of other things too. We love waterfalls, nature, sightseeing but also love skiing. We've been told we can ski (very limited!!) in iceland. I would love to go there and see the blue lagoon, northern lights etc. But most people go and stay in Reykjavik, so has anyone been Iceland, done the sightseeing stuff as well as skiing?? If so, where did you stay and where did you ski? From what I can tell Blafjoll has the most slopes (approx 6) but this would be fine for a day and then doing other stuff for the week. Any info on skiing there would be great. We are thinking of going v end of January/begin of Feb

thanks

thanks Claude B, Just looking into ski prices. This website http://www.skidasvaedi.is/desktopdefault.aspx/tabid-291/350_read-1550/ says a daily lift pass is 3.100Kr. Just googled it, thats £268. Surely thats not correct???

According to xe.com 3,100 ISK is £16.00 which sounds a lot more reasonable! Happy

Or you could try something like this, skiing the northern West Fjords (Hornstrandir) area of Iceland http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?p=2280760#2280760

Yeah the ski areas are very cheap because the local government owns and operates them with a reasonable subsidy. On the downside that means they tend to operate to fixed dates to keep within budget.

Blafjoll and Skalafell are the ski areas around Reykjavik, both about 25-30 min drive from Reykjavik. Those areas are small and limited. Blafjoll is supposed to be open from beginning of January till 1st of may. But opening in January and February is very unreliable. I think most often it is only 2-4 days in January.
I would not come to Iceland for piste skiing, the opening is way too unreliable and the ski areas poor. But trip like Geoffers did or heliskiing is very interesting and I will probably do it myself someday.

In the middle of the week (mon-fri) Blafjoll is open till 21 o'clock (floodlights) so you could head up to the mountains after you have spent the day doing some touristic stuff. There is bus service when it is open.

Touristic stuff:
Blue lagoon is only 25 km from Reykjavik, so I would stay in Reykjavik for that. There is frequent bus service to it.
Northern lights, best to head outside of Reykjavik after dark, but sometimes it can be seen in Reykjavik. The met. office has forecast for it on this page. http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/
If you go further, e.g. to the glaciers then you might think about staying somewhere on the way.
booking.com probably best for accommodation. Even airbnb (dont know the quality of it, more risk)

Bláfjöll's what you make of it really. I have a lot of fun up there despite it's diddly stature.

The latter video is on some of the steeper terrain next to the main ski area which is a short hike or even shorter skin away. It used to be lift served for a black run down the least steep bit but it hasn't turned in a few years AFAIK.
