Maybe voyeurism? Maybe that is straying into the apres.
I must say of the people who I ski with on a frequent basis there is probably only a small difference in the sexes willingness to venture off piste. Having said that the stuff I do and enjoy doing is not the massive balls you fall you did stuff more the Gentle solitude of being away from the masses with hopefully the added attraction of some nice ungroomed snow but not crud.

Never done any women only course. But have done group lesson where all who turn up are women. In terms of actual ability, there's no correlation.
I did notice on average, women learner tend to ask more questions and wanted more explanation. I, on the other hand, are the type who "learn by doing/copying" with only a few words of what to focus on. So I'm not particularly thrilled with the extra standing about and talking when the group has more women than men.
That probably was the reason why I never seek out women only lessons. Though if I know/like the instructor, I wouldn't have any problem with that. Really is just my attempt to better my odd of the lesson will turn out to suit my learning style.

I may have contributed to this impression In my defence the two ladies of the England ladies Rugby team both had a particularly sterotypical look and were holding each other in a rather more than friendly way. Wasnt just their sport that informed my assumption!

jedster, it's fine. Our scrum half was actually a lesbian. She was a small lithe lass who was not afraid of tackling anyone of any size. Fair play to her...

the only people I have ever heard call sporty girls lesbians were male, unfortunately this has included male friends of mine. I was not sporty at all at school and was probably more of the loads of make up, older boyfriend type and I never thought any of the girls who did sports were gay. There was a rugby club in the town I grew up in and some of the girls I went to school with played for the women's team and again the only people I remember making lesbian jokes were the boys. |
I've heard those talks from boys. I swear I detect a hint of defensiveness in their tone though.
Basically, when the boys couldn't get the attention of some girls they fancy, they have to invent excuse why the girls were not interested. And it's never because he can't ski (or play whatever sport) as well as the girl. Or the girl is more interested in the sport than him! So it's got to be because the girl is a lesbian!
It's not just sports though. Insecured boys/men calling girls who won't go out with them as lesbians is pretty common theme.

It's a most useful technique to find out if a woman is being view by a bloke as a person or just a sex toy...

Here's another for you

As they are off piste "and" touring I would expect to hear on this thread "lesbian skiing" instead .

davidof, loving the pics! They remind me of that iconic pic of a Victorian woman, in floor length skirts, corset and big hat, crossing a Mont Blanc crevasse on a rickety old wooden ladder.
DB, I can report no overt evidence of lesbians at Combloux's ladies day yesterday. Just a whole bunch of women and families enjoying the mountain. Case closed.

Perty, I want to say thank you for starting this thread actually. I used to be much more daredevil than I am now and didn't have fear of going off piste with someone who knew where to go, no fear of speed or falling over and getting bumps and bruises (immediately signed up for doing the Bob Skeleton when no one else was up for it etc.) Then I found snowHeads and it was a great resource but I started to realise that I wasn't as good a skier as I thought I was (though I never thought I was great or anything) and that I knew very little about technical stuff, gear and so on. I got lessons and did the necessary going back to basics in order to get better... Just as I was on the cusp of feeling more confident about doing the sort of stuff I would do before but now with better technique, I broke my ACL and so spent last season (having had an operation in May) skiing very tentatively, on piste only. My instructor was insistent that, once the school holidays were over in March, I'd have to start doing more adventurous stuff but then she had a season-ending injury during half term and I wimped out of finding someone else and so just carried on doing the same thing. I have definitely started to overthink in a way I never used to and avoiding pushing myself outside of my new, lower comfort zone... and then I read the thread where Corduroy is saying he's been skiing something I'd currently be nervous to do when he's only had 6 weeks on skis and I realise it's time to change!

I've been getting like that..... but a great day today with Charlotte on the first day of the "On2Off" course. We did some (to us) pretty steep off piste with a fair bit of powder on - really nice conditions, actually, but no way I'd have done it without Charlotte's coaching, or someone similar. Then we did it again, and it was easier...... she suggested we might do it again after she'd left us, at lunch, but we all felt our legs had had enough and did some less steep skiing - but still more difficult than what I normally do, with some poor light and a lot of fresh churned up snow - even the blue pistes were quite hard work. A nice group to ski with - we are all quite well matched and there was no testosterone flying around.

Online, as in real life, it takes a surprising small whiff of the tedious old locker room to be off-putting.
Anyway...just popping to say that it's certainly true that the difference evens out considerably when you look at people who actually live in mountain towns. Of course this is very much self-selected, but one of the things I really love about here is that there are so many mountain sport-loving women.
Also, love the Moucherotte lady! Very poised. Where's the pic from?
