Don't forget the comedy fancy-dress outfit - they won't let you on the lift without one.
I always go for 'The Stig' but 'Jesus' (on the cross) is good for Austria and Nazi regalia is ever-popular in the 3 valleys

A pair of chalet "slippers" or loafers for getting to the ski locker room/breakfast/slobbing around your room etc . I use Crocs. You don't want to struggle into your snow boots every time you need footwear.

Paracetamol, ibuprofen (for hangovers or injuries). I always take large rolls of adhesive zinc oxide tape for blisters, sore feet, rubbed patches of skin from boots. Came in very very handy when Mrs jirac twisted her knee two years ago. I strapped it up as per my old rugby knees and it worked a treat so she could keep on skiing.

BlueSky, Good checklist. The buff is a good addition.
Rucksack - I know Snowheads seem to be very pro rucksacks, but I've never really felt the need to carry one. Unless you are going off piste and need shovels, poles, transceivers, hot water bottles, oxygen cyliders etc. then I honestly can't think what I'd put in one. Bottle of wine and a baguette, perhaps, but then that was why God invented mountain restaurants. My guess is that <5% of piste skiers wear one.
Warm coat - It would be quite nice to have a less bulky coat for apres ski, but not really necessary IMO. I can't see any likelihood of the OP actually getting wet In January. The snow will just brush off and you'd be unlucky for it to rain.
Timberlands - I have a great pair. BUT, the soles are that hard yellow material and they are worse than useless in the snow. A bit like winter vs summer tyres, the compound seems just too hard. |
I find that an in-flight mini wine bottle can be washed and refilled and kept in an inside pocket - the temperature is perfect to keep the rouge ready for chairlift refreshment. In the interests of safety, be sure to use a plastic glass! (And that's a plastic wineglass, not cup; and certainly don't swig from the bottle!!)

A good tip from my son who did a ski season - get a short uk 4 socket plug thingy and put a euro converter on that - run your iphone etc etc without heaps of adapters

If you can't walk through an airport terminal using 2 hands you are carrying too much. Dockers look better than jeans. Anything cotton like hoodies is worthless. Cotton underwear and turtlenecks can be washed at night and dry in the morning and are ok. New synthetics also work. Wear your helmut. Wear your boots if weight is a problem (at least thru checkin). Spare gloves (maybe light) should be carried while skiing unless you are skiing 5 minutes from a ski shop or you can ski back down the ski lift to retrieve your dropped glove (and maybe ski pole). Oh yes, check your passport expiration dates well before your departure. I have more, but enough for now.

The OP is off tomorrow, so I suggest we let this thread die a peaceful death.......once I've had the last word!
frankef, I agree with much of what you say, but:
I assume you're joking about wearing a helmet and boots through the apt. Apart from looking a total plonker he has a huge baggage allowance so doesn't need to.
'anything cotton like is worthless' - Why? Amazingly, people managed to go skiing before plastic clothes were invented. Other materials may have some advantages, but cotton is not 'worthless'. Personally I'd far rather wear cotton for most layers.
Dockers look better than Jeans - hardly relevant to the discussion
Spare gloves - Seriously? The OP is not going ski touring for miles across the mountains. Does anyone on piste really carry spare gloves? And if so where? In the rucksack the poor sap is now going to need as well?

no we're not going to let it lie
I tend to agree that rucsacs are a bit OTT on piste but do often end up carying one if I'm skiing with the kids - that's when a camel back, spare goves, buffs, snacks, etc come in handy. I prefer a slim, close fitting rucsac to bulging pockets.
If I'm going to be skiing off piste (which I normally am if I'm NOT with the kids) then I always wear one. And if I wear one, then I generally throw a spare pair of gloves in. If you have a little snafu off-piste it can be nice to put dry gloves on.
But if I'm doing grown up skiing and wont be tempted off-piste then yeah, I'll leave the rucsac behind.

I always carry spare gloves, more for my husbands benefit really, cos if I lost a glove he would have to give me his, cos I'm miserable if my hands are cold.
eblunt, why a head torch?

NE1, I'll grant that it is technically possible to drop a ski glove from a chairlift but with a tiny amount of care the chances are so remote that I'd suggest one hardly needs to worry about it. Why not spare goggles, sun cream, camera, scarf, hat, knickers, mobile phone, and head torch

shouldn't need passport photo any more. for those 8+ day passes, they take a pic with a webcam now.
(edit: actually take passport along if buying an 8+ day pass - dolomiti superski, and probably others, scan that instead.)
reminders about PASSES definitely. And if you're really going to pack 2 jackets, and still forget to swap pass over, then you'll deserve the mickey taking you'll get
sunnies are handy for when dining outside in the sun. i cheat by picking the side of the table that faces away from the sun.

holidayloverxx, I like it - left a bit, straight on for four paces, step over curb, continue for 35 paces. Actually who have you got on the other end of the phone?
We can all mock other peoples packing lists, and point out that eblunt, has a passport photo and flight tickets but no book to read or spare underwear but really it all just a bit of fun. Now where did I put that pack of Tetely's tea and the nail clippers
