think he's going to be left with a huge bill as your insurance is invalid if skiing La Grave without a guide!

Is that true?

kitenski, my insurance covers me specifically for off piste without a guide. As Lizzard says it depends on your policy.

Whitegold, More snow, less powder. Lots of wind this year so higher off piste was often crusty. What there was, was tracked out by about midday on the lower slopes. Report later. Kids, certificates and lots of peeps coming round - must hoover, do certs and get folding chairs out of the cave.

It was windy again today, but not actually cold. The snow around the Toura was fine, but just below that it was quite hard early on. the Cretes became a puddingly sort of consistency after about 13.00. Having said that, the visibility was fine all day, and I'm sure the snow was OK higher up if you could brave the wind. I brought poor Ian McD down the Grande Pente which was truly ghastly. Poor bloke did very well as the snow had become soft all the way through which meant we were frequently sinking in a foot or two in the middle or end of a turn. It's a shame it's gone so far, but I won't be skiing it again in a hurry.
I forgot to take any pix up on the mountain, but took this of the Diable looking a bit sad when I got home. It's still fine and skiable, but is clearly melting back. Still - there are only 2 more weeks of the season to go.

easiski,
Maybe but not as much as skiing down the Girose by yourself.
Mrs R32, horrible news, hope it's not complicated to fix

Today was largely cloudy but with bright spells. There was wind at 2,600m in the morning, but it had vanished by the afternoon. AM the snow was very nice at Toura area and down Gours, heavy on the nursery slopes at midday, but very nice at the glacier in the afternoon. All the way to 2,600 was fine although a little wet on the lower sections. We didn't bother to ski below that at 16.30 but came down inthe Jandri Express.
There were a lot of loonies around today - hopefully they won't be staying for the week, but every lesson (except the beginners) was beset by young adults either straight-lining runs and nearly knocking us over, or just going far too fast and far to close. As usual we took the Echines to avoid the crowds on Signal.
Pix looking out of a white egg at the nursery slopes, showing they're still there and skiable, and also of the crowds on Serre Palas late in the day with the mist.

Re insurance - I'd read the small print very carefully about definitions etc of what constitutes off piste
I have Dog Tags extreme sports policy - I'm pretty well covered for most - though not beyond 4,500ms even with a guide - that's covered by another policy......and yet I'm not covered for ski touring without a guide with what I currently have - I will read again definition of off piste but I'm fairly sure LG on my own I'd not be covered - I'll go and have a read again...............
And in response to Swirly I've been riding LG for well over ten years and know the safer route(s) down the glacier to take me back into Chancal, but I'm still cautious, hence ringing up mate the day before - trouble is many of the tourists that come over from LDA have no fecking idea of where they are going, but at this time of year Vallons is pretty well a piste and that's the main route they all take - always amusing is like lemmings they all follow each other missing out on some better and easier pitches if they bothered to look around and do some simple traversing - and very few even know Chancal exists!!
So back home in the UK now - plan is to come back in a couple of weeks for some high hut touring and take advanatage of any last minute dumps at altitude if conditions allow...............

Wish I was still there, unfortunately had an unscheduled return to work today. However I did manage to get on an earlier flight from Luton last night and avoided the 5 hour wait .
easiski, huge thanks for your encouragement and patience. Hopefully I'll manage back before too long.
Great to meet Colin B, Natalie B and snowskisnow and family. Joe will long remember his lesson and afternoon in the park.

and all the crevases? Take a look at the photo in P3 next time you're up there. I have no problem with anyone wanting to ride down La Grave by themselves, obvious caveats regarding snowpack and ability (not just ski ability) apply, but going off on a glacier on your todd regardless of how well skied is not the best idea.
Not really skied here for the last few days, met up with Arno on Friday at AdH so have been making use of his beta, could do with it staying sunny for a couple more days to get some more runs there done and make the most of the days on the lift pass we get. Also went to PSV, I imagine there's some amazing stuff off the back otherwise I don't get what the fuss is about

I'm in Troyes now on my way home. Last run yesterday I decided had to go up to the glacier and ski down to Toura at 4.45. The snow was perfect still eeven though it was a hot sunny day.

Bad weather this morning, but lots of POWDER! couldn't see anything though. It cleared a bit in the afternoon. Pic from the bottom of the Viking. It's still possible to teach a beginner.

Superb day today although cloudy and snowy at times. Pistes very well prepared (smooth) with a nice layer of fresh snow on top. Very few people about.
Slushy after 3.00pm lower down, but for the time of year very nice.
