Forecasts are a bit more optimistic than all of you...
Some little dust on 7th....and after on 10th we are talking some more serious thing.
Still nothing confirmed, but I'm expecting something on 10/01, to determine if we are talking about 10 or 30cm...

@drporat, if you feel comfortable in all conditions, why not? I once did an off piste course (in 1987) in St. Anton, when there was only 50cm at the Valluga. Was brilliant! |
I am not that good yet. Still struggling off piste, so I'm hoping next week will bring something better. Nevertheless I intend to enjoy myself on whatever is available

@drporat, off piste is more than "perfect" powder, it's about learning how to ski all terrain in all conditions. Perhaps hire an instructor for an off piste lesson vs "just" a guide??

@kitenski, indeed.
I am not looking for perfect conditions while skiing or generally in life.
We all know the saying: " Life isn't about waiting for the rain to stop. It's about learning to dance in the rain"
Initially I planned to book an off piste guide with the aim of choosing something simpler/less steep so I can work on that.
But in those conditions I'll probably limit myself to the red ski route plus on piste.
Thanks for the good advice.

@AlTom, broad agreement there will be a few cms of snow on Friday but beyond that not much on the horizon. Morris' ever optimistic algorithm suggests a total of 20cm at the mid station, though experience suggests a realistic amount is usually around half the forecast figure https://wepowder.com/en/st-anton-am-arlberg#valluga . Maybe we will be lucky and there will be more than forecast.

In my experience, anything more than 4 or 5 days out becomes a crapshoot. You claim to be able to forecast almost 2 weeks out. Wow!

Just saying the snow for 11 january is practically off the radar, and that both ZAMG (Austrian), and Meteoblue (Swiss) are showing sun until 19 january
We are in a typically longlasting H-pressure situation

A nice freshen up of the pistes on Saturday (nobody around because of the weather) where we found boot top snow in Zurs. Up early Sunday morning for blue skies and lovely piste conditions. Pretty busy and Schindler & Valfegehr was getting cut up by noon.

I don't put any serious credence in more than 3 days unless there is a very obvious weather system brewing, After that, I trust the cows too

About 10-13 seasons ago Something similar to this happened between Mooserwirt & Galzigbahn except the Skier was sleeping (around 10pm) on the backside of an ungroomed mogul.. The victim was shreaded into Burger Meat and the PistenBully Driver never worked again (shock).

@stanton, that's the risk you take skiing on closed pistes, though the assumption is that is was properly marked as closed. Its the piste basher driver I feel sorry for, he was only doing his job.
I hope those skiing down the Steissbachtal take note.

Had a couple of good days in st.anton.
Still able to found some packed powder and old soft snow in N and W faces if you search for. This afternoon in S steep faces things soften up and also was able to ski most areas around schindler-mattun.
It's necessary new snow ASAP but in the meantime conditions are better than I expected.
Of course those skiing mainly in pistes are in good conditions, only S orientations a bit damaged at the end of the day.
About steisbachtal, there a massive cuts above it, and taking into account temperatures and forecasts, I expect won't be opened soon.

Currently sitting in a train at Buchs. It really does feel like spring. Foothills of the Alps are greener than I have seen them in January for a long time; perhaps greener than in mid-March, when we usually leave. The sky/light does not feel like winter.
C’est la vie. We have had 2 awesome winters in a row. Let’s see what this winter brings. Too early to call this one...

@ulmerhutte, it is 10degrees above normal for January all over North Western Europe (inc Austria ,Schweiz)..
If there had not been had the early December snow... skiing would be limited to grass by now !!
Couple of cms tonight hopefully but no more new snow in sight for at least 10days and it is going to be Spring Like Temperatures !!

And despite all that you say, still today was able to found some old cold snow.
Really quiet around, lots of russians/ucranians spending their "christmas", 0 queues, includig Madloch and Zug.
So, of course 1 year ago was amazing all that powder, but it's not that bad!! IMO

@ulmerhutte, the weather geeks are beginning to push a change in the weather in about a weeks time, a move to colder snowier conditions seems possible. Lets hope it happens.

I was actually quite surprised how much snow there was when I arrived in StA. It certainly did look like mid-spring on the way in. The caravan park not far from Langen is usually buried in snow, but not yesterday. The vans were sitting in fields of green.
I expected to see the front slopes covered in brown and green, with narrow carpets of white, but no, they looked pretty decent. There is even snow on our back deck. Did not ski yesterday. Settling-in afternoon after 30+ hours of travel. Looking forward to today...

@drporat, Its a pity for the tourists that the lift company changed the opening times a few seasons ago from 08:30 to 08:45
They now only open 08:30 when the clocks change to summer time ....

I am surprised how well the pistes are holding up. Pretty much full cover. I guess we have the cold temps, at least until yesterday, to thank for that (and a huge snow-making effort).
The off-piste? I have only ventured into the side piste so far and, as you might imagine, it is, well, pretty sketchy.
Nice to have beautiful bluebird days to get the ski legs back into gear.
Rumour has it that the cows are saying snow on Friday.

@ulmerhutte, we are lucky there was a good start early season.
I was a bit anxious yesterday due to higher temperatures and sunny skies, but everything held up perfectly till late afternoon. I always return from Lech on Kandahar and was afraid it will be slushy already... what a treat!
On the other hand, in the morning we came down from Tritkopf by ski road 136 in order to get to Zurs just in front of Seekopf (I remember that red 134 doesn't get close to Zursersee as the map shows). Frozen moguls.... Never again. Brrrr

@drporat, Übungshangbahn + 123 is the way to go to switch sides in Zürs (and also when coming from Zürsertäli (144). Also there the map is not accurate, 144 does’nt get to Zürsersee either)
